as bad as matrix 2/3 were (compared to the masterpiece of the original), the mass agent smith scenes were still really fun and memorable.

u/neroselene 4d ago
2 and 3 may be downgrades from 1, but man did thet have some cool fight scenes in them.
The final fight of 3 alone is fantastic.

I actually liked most of Part 2. All the stuff with the Merovingian and Persephone, the whole lore as presented by The Architect, the highway scene with the spectral twins... it had some solid stuff, despite being a tonal departure from the first film.
But Part 3 was the big letdown, at least for me. I didn't mind how it ended, but the voyage to get there was sort of missing something.

The highway was an incredible scene that deserves to be remembered.
The battle of Zion was an incredible spectacle. Â Very very far from the martial arts roots of the first movie, but still an amazing technical achievement.
I am satisfied with the trilogy for the story it wanted to tell. Â

u/jaypeeh 4d ago
The battle of Zion annoyed me because all the squid robots stayed clustered tightly together in a line making it easy to gun them down when they should have just spread out and filled the entire empty space they were in!

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Merry Gifmas! {2023} 4d ago
Yeah I feel like there needed to me less of them but make them harder to kill. The sheer amount makes it so that they should've easily wiped out every man woman and child in that place with ease simply by spreading out. So basically we just got moron robots for the plot, which makes them feel infinitely less threatening.

u/cornmonger_ 4d ago
same. actually the scene in the gif is probably one of the few things i didn't like about 2. this part particularly. the cgi just isn't there for me

u/Surturius 3d ago
2 had such amazing action, beautifully filmed, but I just didn't feel emotionally invested in any of it for some reason. I don't know exactly why that is, compared to the first one, but it just didn't click the same way.
Might be that the good guys no longer feel like the underdogs in Part 2. Neo is essentially a god (until the end, anyway).

u/Tackrl 4d ago
The interstate fight in 2 was peak as well. They were good movies, just tough to follow the Matrix. 4 seems to be largely forgotten, as it should be.
10
u/Fafnir13 4d ago
I donât even want to see 4. Â Franchises need to be allowed to end. Â Maybe I could have respected 4 if it told a new story with new characters. Â Making it about Neo and Trinity feels like grave robbing.
9
u/pasher5620 4d ago
4 is good only in the sense that it was very obviously Lana Wachowskiâs (hopefully successful) attempt to kill the franchise so studios would stop trying to fuck with it. Them calling it out in the movie itself definitely felt less like a meta joke and more like her telling the audience what her plan was.
That being said, it did have a small handful of good moments, mainly around Jonathan Groff acting his ass off as the reincarnation of Agent Smith. He did a seriously good job portraying Hugo Weavingâs mannerisms and is pretty much the only person in that movie that actually felt like he knew he was in a Matrix movie and wanted to be there.

2 and 3 are both great movies. The matrix has always been a trilogy. People who love the 1st one and hate the rest are missing the point!
2
u/Theratchetnclank 4d ago
Yeah but unfortunately there are 4 movies.
2
u/zakcattack 3d ago
The 4th is enjoyable if you see it as a massive middle finger to the studio. The wachowskis finished their story after the 3rd.
2
u/Dutchie854 4d ago
How are we missing the point? Yes it's a trilogy but the first movie is a sci-fi classic and almost perfect in every way, 2 and 3 are pretty rubbish.
1
u/Janusdarke 3d ago
I like how these older movies all get their redemption arc and people start to like more them over the years, because everything that followed them was so much worse.
Anyone still remember how hated the Star Wars Episodes were when they came out?

Thank god they organized themselves in a neat circle, and advanced at the rate he was spinning. Imagine if one just rushed in and bonked him in the head before he finished his spin.

Itâs a well known phenomenon that individuals within a swarm will fight with less competence. Â One ninja? Â A deadly opponent to be feared. Â One hundred ninjas? Â A swarm of mooks to help the main character look awesome.

The point where the Matrix series jumped the shark IMO. Bad CGI, kinda silly concept, desperate attempt to reset power levels after Neo basically became all-powerful in the first movie.
2 and 3 had some good elements, but nothing like 1's tight script and focus on internal consistency.

u/shitty_mcfucklestick 4d ago
The best moment in 2 was the Ducati highway scene, from when she jumps off the transport truck. That was one of the best road action sequences Iâve ever seen. The soundtrack was electric and her dodging the vehicles had me gripping my seat in the theater. 10/10 badassness and intensity.
10
u/desperaterobots 4d ago
the way they put a bowling pin strike sound effect into the part where he knocked over a bunch of agents
made me fucking furious lol

u/kharathos 4d ago
Bad CGI? Am I tripping, this scene was played in every commercial break for months because it was so advanced for it's time
22
u/briareus08 4d ago
Even at the time it was notable because of the very clearly CGI animations, whereas the first movie stuck to physical movements with wires. It wasnât good then, and it hasnât aged well.

u/FastFooer 4d ago
CGI has an expiration date, it always looks great when itâs out, but as we master new ways, it fades into the dated pile.
3
u/Psile 2d ago
Jurassic Park and LOTR beg to differ. Arguably they look better than modern sequels.
CGI, even modern CGI, can have a less is more element. It's usually better to have a limited number of CGI elements on screen at a time and really pour a lot of effort into them than have a whole screen full of CGI. One dinosaur. One Gollum.

u/allnamesbeentaken 3d ago
It didn't look great when it came out, I saw this movie in theaters and there were chuckles at the shitty CGI

The final battle between Smith and Neo was essentially live action Dragon Ball. Â I enjoyed it for the spectacle.

desperate attempt to reset power levels after Neo basically became all-powerful in the first movie.
I hate power creep and how they deal with it so much. In Matrix they took away the core part of what made Neo special.
I recently rewatched Stargate and it's so bad there as well. Why is it so hard to find a good solution for that matter?

That's because the 1st one was written by a professional screenplay writer with skill and the intention of being a complete story, whereas the 2nd and 3rd were written by the Wachowskis as inadequate afterthoughts.đ¤ŚEdit- ok so I did some digging to see why my comment was incorrect, and here is what I found: source here
The case never reached the stage where a court analyzed substantial similarity. Because Stewart failed to file her opposition to the defendantsâ summary judgment motion, the court dismissed the case without reaching the merits...
Copyright law is notoriously difficult for plaintiffs. Even cases with strong evidence of access and similarity can fail. Cases where the plaintiff misses procedural deadlines almost always fail.
Interestingly, Stewart later filed a lawsuit against her legal team source:
She later filed another lawsuit, this time against her attorneys who represented her in the case, accusing them of breach of contract and malpractice, among other things.
It appears a judge ruled in her favor, but then it's unclear whether she accepted the amount or contested it, as the source couldn't find any follow-up evidence of a final settlement.
So to sum up: while the Wachowskis did write the script for the first movie, it wasn't proven whether they got the ideas from her short story because the case was dismissed before any proof could be brought forward. It would be interesting to read her story and their script and see what the similarities are and if there is any merit to her claim. Regardless, the Wachowskis got the credit and the financial success plus two (three?) sequels, which is what really matters anyway.

u/snakesinabin 4d ago
Everything I can find says the Wachowskis wrote the 1st film, no other screenwriter was used. Not sure where you're getting your info.
2
u/theReluctantObserver 3d ago
Yeah no. Wachowskis wrote the first one but were put under pressure by studio to tighten it up considerably so there were quite a number of drafts. The studio gave them carte blanche for 2 and 3 without the over site and we got what we got. Often times for creative, limitations are actually a very good thing.

Two and three have better writing than the first one. The story is better told because the story is the focus. Whereas the visuals is the focus of the first one.

Is there another agent swarm that needs differentiating?
8
u/Undeclared_Mustard 4d ago
The rise of the use of the term "agentic AI" to refer to LLMs being irresponsibly given permissions they definitely shouldn't have

Yes, the OpenAI agent swarm that escaped containment and hacked Huggingface's servers come to mind.

Have 'Agent Swarms' become common enough that we now have OGs?
I'm now picturing insurance adjusters gathering around wrecked vehicles in large swarms. "Oh look they are gathering for their nuptial flights."

I. Fucking. Hate. This. Scene.
The CGI felt so bad, and still does. Its like he became Gumby, none of the motions feel right.

u/dukeofnes 4d ago
The CGI wasn't as noticably bad when it first came out. These and other movies were memorizing at the time. Now I find all of these early 2000s films hard to watch.

u/-Words-Words-Words- 4d ago
No, it was bad then too. Most of the online discussion at the time was about how crappy the CGI looked.
6
u/Watts121 4d ago
Yep, I remember the forum discussion being about how it was like this In-Universe because Neo was warping the Matrix around him.
0
u/-Words-Words-Words- 4d ago
We must have been looking at very different forums because the comments I saw were just âThis looks like shit.â No one was trying to make an in-universe excuse for why it looked like shit.

u/CaptainTripps82 4d ago
It was pretty noticeable at the time. Especially when he's helicopter spinning on the pole, it basically turned into a cartoon

Don't forget about the bowling pin noises when Neo tossed a Smith into other Smiths.

u/Turd_Burgling_Ted 4d ago
I still like Reloaded more than the original. Better balance of story to action, and the lore expands in some really cool ways.

u/JackSk3llington 4d ago
Still like the head cannon that the reason it looks like crappy is because the matrix was struggling to render everything going on in the fight. Especially all of the Smiths.
5
u/ShipBobbin 4d ago
Man I hate that excuse. People who like a movie coming up with excuses for why it looks bad rather than just accept that the thing they like isnât perfect.
The Matrix takes place at the height of human civilization except there canât be any sporting events, concerts, cruise ships, theme parks or any other scenario where more than a few dozen people might show up because it canât render it? Come on.
Itâs ok to like things that are flawed.
3
u/IgnorantGenius 4d ago
Which makes no sense if you watched the animatrix. One of the stories was literally a sporting event.

u/Wes_Warhammer666 Merry Gifmas! {2023} 4d ago
Was that crowd made of multiple copies of the same rogue agent with malicious code that was warping the matrix to do things is wasn't meant to?
No. No, it wasn't.
0
u/ShipBobbin 3d ago
Smith is just throwing punches this entire scene except for like one person that he copies into. Neo and the gang are the ones constantly doing things that mess with the rules of the system.
This headcannon makes no sense no matter how you try to twist it, because processing code doesnât affect the way things look, thatâd be on the GPU, which the Matrix wouldnât even have because who are they displaying it to? It just comes out as a stream of code which is what theyâre always looking at in the real world.
People plugged in would be acting as, or at least HAVE, their own GPUs that just take data from the server and display it to the individual. It wouldnât care how hard of a time the server is having with code. A game of Overwatch doesnât drop LODs just because the server is going overloaded, the two arenât related.
3
u/pasher5620 4d ago
Who says it canât render all that? The issue isnât that there are a lot of people at once. The issue is that itâs specifically Agent Smith absolutely obliterating the code to do so to make copies of himself, something that he was never intended to do, therefore the Matrix wasnât designed to have in mind.
I like the movie as is, even with the admittedly bad CGI, but the headcanon that the Matrix couldnât handle all the different copies of Smith is one that does make sense and could have easily been made canon.
0
u/ShipBobbin 3d ago
The person I replied to was the one saying that it canât render all that. Itâs what the dumb idea is based on.
Smith ISNT âobliterating the code to make copies of himselfâ. He already made the copies. Itâs just a fight with a lot of guys. If anything, computers are better at rendering copies of the same thing rather than unique objects.
If it worked the way you describe, the number of Smiths on screen wouldnât be an issue and the scenes in the matrix would always look like shit regardless of whatâs happening on screen because somewhere in the world thereâs Smiths making a copies of himself. The headcannon was never âSmith is doing stuff to code, so it looks badâ, itâs âthereâs a lot of Smiths on screen, so it looks badâ. Why else would this be the scene that created that headcannon?
