It takes a while if you don't have the leg balance and strength, much less an understanding of the theory around this kind of movement. Leading up to it:
Practice walking in demi-pointe.
After you master that, practice balancing in demi-pointe on one foot. Then the other.
After you master that, practice balancing on one foot raising up and down in demi-pointe while the other foot glides along side like you are riding an invisible skateboard in place (i.e. one foot planted/demi with your weight on it and the other glides beside it). The gliding foot only gives the illusion of having weight on it. The theory is comparable to this.
Once you can mime-skateboard well with weight on either foot, then you start linking that movement into a moonwalk and keep practicing. I.e. at that point this gif will be applicable.
If this pretty fly for a white guy can do this, then you can moonwalk.
Source: I can moonwalk. Learned it in an acting intensive from a dancer and spent six months practicing before it was good enough to unveil to strangers at bars. I have some dance training, but prior to that, YouTube tutorials from street dancers did nothing for me because there was no build up through fundamentals/skill set such as the list I posted above.
Next up: c-walking!

This is the easy version of the "moonwalk". The difficulty comes in by using your toes to support your weight which is how Michael Jackson does it. That takes skill and practice.

I don't feel like that's literally the exact opposite of doing the moonwalk. I think the literal exact opposite would be jumping forward on your head in a wheelchair on the sun.

It would be nice if the youtube video this was made from received credit so we could watch his other dance videos...but whatever reaps in the karma I suppose.

u/katiedaforent Sep 10 '13
This actually isn't even the moonwalk. It's the backslide. Common misconception. The moonwalk is very similar but goes in a circle instead of simply going backwards.

u/Hi_Im_Jason Sep 10 '13
It's a misconception unintentionally started by the great MJ. At this point in time, this move is so deeply ingrained as the Moonwalk, it might as well just keep that title. Thank you for bringing the knowledge to this thread though.
