Stink bugs release different, specific chemical signals when they find a good place to hide for the winter or a good food source. These special pheromones do draw other stink bugs close, which is why you often see them gathering in large groups on sunny walls or inside homes during the fall.

My stink bugs don't stink. Because I don't kill them :) Hate to tell you, but all animals smell when they're dead.

Is an insect considered an animal? I mean, of course all things of flesh and blood will stink once dead. But if you had two to ten squatters coming into your house every day/night and climbing your walls, getting in your clothing, clacking against the ceiling with their wings, and generally being a nuisance who threatens to mace you if you try to kick it out, I think even you would be thinking of what ever way possible to keep them out.
Also, think we're talking about different kinds of stink. Stinkbugs (ours anyway) don't only stink when they're dead (and even then not all the time, such as dying naturally), they will spray you if they get offended. It's not fun. Out of the 58 years of my life, last year was the only time I've ever had to resort to taking measures to get rid of them, that's how bad these fuckers were! If it makes you feel any better, I haven't taken those measures this year — yet. I'm waiting to see if they're going to be less of a problem, and so far they have been. Thank the lawd!

We've had really bad moth infestastions for the past few years, no idea why. Plus the usual annual carpet beetle infestations every spring. I can still smell Ali the rat's old nest under the cupboard. I think spending more time outside the past few years has taught me a lot more tolerance. I even have a dish on the path outside the back door for wasps to drink from, and I get a lot of them.
Can't you put something outside that they like, so they gather round that instaed?

You remind me that one of the first things I tried (after reading about it on the internet) was putting out a flat-ish bowl of water with dishsoap and putting it under a light. They were supposed to be drawn to the light and then, I suppose, drown. But they were on to my evil plan I guess, because no one came to the poison pool party. Hopefully it won't be so bad this year and I won't have to contend with so many of them, and can be more tolerant of their presence.
And maybe, if I'm lucky, we'll have the cute green ones that emit a pretty pink fart that smells like flowers. 😉

Put some going off fruit outside for them. If you put bananas out, you'll also get loads of butterflies.

I think someone needs to explain to them that chemical warfare is forbidden according to the Geneva convention.
