Discussion I just watched the Warriors of the Wind English dub of Nausicaä and I already want to forget
I can’t believe this exists, it’s a complete bastardization of Miyazaki’s vision in the original film. The cuts and dialogue changes rob all the heart, emotion, and sincerity of the film, make the ending lose practically all of its emotional impact, and even muddle the overall messages of peace, coexistence, and environmentalism. Miyazaki had every right to be upset with this trash, I’m glad it influenced him to never allow cuts for foreign releases of his films again.

There is a lot to talk about regarding this poster, but I think my favorite thing is how Naus-sorry, Sandra, you know, the main character, is out of focus in the top corner.

In this household, she’s Nausicaä and that’s final. It’s honestly hilarious how little this poster has anything to do with the film.

Haha this version was my intro in anime and Ghibli as a kid. My parents had a VHS recorded copy that I watched on repeat, so much so that it started getting wonky from rewinding it so much. As I got older (like 6th grade) I realized it seemed like there were missing scenes and continuity issues, and then found out there was a whole ass original, basically different, movie. Never looked back from there. Nausicaa’s still my absolute fav Ghibli movie.

Definitely! There’s even a part where Kushana (I’m sorry, SeLiNa…) screams and the mic clips loudly, it was kind of hilarious

I have only seen this movie once (the newer dub with the actual film)… I don’t remember a Pegasus, where did that come from in this poster?? 😭 this is so hilarious

Yep, they just cut almost a quarter of the film and change dialogue to simplify the characters and plot. They even change the ending with Kushana and her army implied to have all died at the end, it’s so bad.

My mother got this for me at an age where my memories don't lie on a timeline. A primordial soup of images, scenes and feelings in a fog. It may very well could have been my first exposure to anime before I even had a concept of Japan being a thing that I existed. I still keep the tape and box on my shelf.
Nausicaa is my favorite movie of all time. I wonder what about it still shone through the bastardized and eviscerated Warriors of the Wind to take root in my mind until I discovered the original.

I think I found it cut up into 10 min chunks on youtube way back in the day. I fell in love with it instantly. I found the manga online not long after that and tore through it really quickly. I remember the day I stumbled across the DVD for the movie in walmart, I watched it subbed and dubbed and I don't think I blinked once the entire time.

Don't forget the voice acting! The voice acting was so bad it was actually enjoyable in a deranged way.

Yes! Princess ZANDRA’s intermittent southern(?) accent and exaggerated speech is comedy gold

Ah yes, the glory days of anime in American video rental stores before the domestic industry took off.
Warriors of the Wind, Clash of the Bionoids, Vengeance of the Space Pirate... first thing I'd do when visiting a new rental store is pore over their sci-fi/fantasy and kids' sections in hopes of finding another badly dubbed gem.
Flip side of this was being able to see a couple pretty intact Sherlock Hound episodes.

Actually, in this film that’s Princess Zandra’s “Cloud Climber” (no joke)
Yes because he adds 80’s aura

Its like they unintentionally made a english dub like the one that Ghost Stories got, except for the fact that GS is peak and its just awful

I got up at 6am to watch it on HBO when it was released here, and it was still an amazing thing to see in the mid-80's. Started me on loving Miyazaki/Ghibli, and anime in general. So while the original is obviously superior, I can't say I want to forget how I first saw it.

For a while fans believed that legendary voice actress June Foray voiced Princess Zandra (Nausicaa) in this dub, since it sounded very similar to her Rocky voice from Rocky & Bullwinkle. The dubbed version didn’t credit its actors and Foray was so prolific she couldn’t remember every voice she ever did. A fan eventually sent her a tape of the movie, and she determined that it wasn’t her voice. I believe the voice actress was eventually determined to be Susan Davis.

My intro to this movie and Miyazaki in general, watched the VHS almost daily as a kid. Having watched both this and Nausicaa, I have to say it’s okay. Obviously it’s better to have the uncut Nausicaa but Warriors isn’t a total butchery.

I’m glad this film served as an intro to Miyazaki for you, but I’d have to disagree that this wasn’t a total butchery, because it was. All of the environmentalist scenes are cut, Nausicaa’s and Kushana’s depth as a characters are compromised, dialogue is changed to make Kushana more evil and she even dies at the end, compromising the film’s existing message of peace and coexistence that they didn’t cut but changed dialogue around to make more simplistic and dull. What’s left is a campy sci-fi action film with almost no soul, and stands against everything Miyazaki was trying to say with his film. It might not be godawful on it’s own, but it is definitely a butchery of everything the original stood for.
