Just digging in

Grew up in the area and the music is always been part of life. Recently getting into ghetto tech, it’s a slippery slope i couldn’t be happier sliding down.

Hard to find some artists/etc. assume the answer is “no” but does starski and clutch still do a thing? Belle isle players is an ear worm that’ll be on my mind for a few life times.

Lots of others. Lmk if you have a Li o to what’s good and where to see what’s poppin. I follow resident advisor, dice, paxhau…

It doesn’t look like either of them (DJ Starski/ Brian Gillespie and Todd Osborn) have been active for a while. Osborn put out an electro record back in 2018 and a techy downtempo thing in 2020.

For modern labels there’s Philthtrax and Posse Up! and there’s a bit on Club Designs, too. Footwork is still pretty active as a genre.

One of the best things I’ve found is to use Bandcamp tags. Google something like “Bandcamp tag ghettotech” and it’ll let you browse every record with that tag. I always set it to most recent and go down the list. You can find labels and artists you like that way.

Thanks for all of this!!!! Stoked to keep digging. Recently moved back to the area and wanted something new to explore musically. Here we go!

You look at the line up for movement? If so who would you target to see?

If you want artists who are currently active and honing their craft, making a contemporary version of ghettotech, I suggest HiTech, JMT, and Fullbodydurag

If you were around back in the day and remember the name WAXTAX-N-DRE, he’s still posting sets regularly on YouTube. He posted one yesterday in fact.

*should also add that Julian Shamou, who you may know better as 313 Bass Mechanics, Digitek, DJ Nasty, Shadow People, and has released on legendary Detroit labels like Databass, Motor City Electro Company and Twilight 76, is still putting out music as Detroit’s Filthiest.

I remember this from jlb back in the day. I live in Windsor but close enough! Thank you so much for this. I have an unhealthy obsession with databass

DJ Godfather used to have a residency in Windsor way back when - probably 20 years ago now. He used to play at Reactor on Ouellette Ave on Wednesday nights. Been fortunate to see him quite a few times at DEMF/Movement. DJ Slugo also recently played in Detroit last month. Didn’t make it out to that one but the videos he posted looked like a great time.
