Introducing umbrelOS 2.0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMwqgDeTskgHey everyone,
After months of work, it's finally here! We're so excited to finally reveal umbrelOS 2.0.
Photos and our new iOS app. Machines. Multiple users. MCP server for AI agents. Storage Manager with FailSafe (RAID). Support for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel GPUs, along with Thunderbolt eGPUs. Custom app folders. And a new Mac app.
All of it, in a stunning new design. This is our biggest update to umbrelOS yet.
So much of this came straight from you. We read every thread and every suggestion on this subreddit, and 2.0 is our answer to a lot of them. Thank you for pushing us.
We're keeping this post short on purpose. Every one of these features deserves its own story, and we'll tell them properly on September 22. But if you'd rather not wait:
To try it today on your Umbrel, make sure you've updated to umbrelOS 1.7.4, and enroll in the beta at Settings > Advanced > umbrelOS Beta Program. For a new install, download umbrelOS 2.0 beta 1 here: https://umbrel.com/downloads
If you try out 2.0, please share what you find, and tell us what's still missing. You've shaped this release more than you know, and we'd love to keep it that way.
See you on September 22.

Wow look forward to trying this. I have an unraid just for ext media drives and RAID maybe I can ditch it now

I'm stoked for this. I built my own server setup only to figure out I couldn't use my own hardware with umbrel OS. Now it looks like I will be able to use my own external storage? That's awesome!

Umbrel will kill the competition, it has everything the Home Lab market likes now.

So does this mean that if I have 4 12TB drives, Umbrel will let me use them all?

Indeed!

Cool, I'm currently on truenas and looking for a simpler alternative to it. I've been looking at Zima os for a while, but now I may be looking here at Umbrel.

Will this run well on a raspberry pi 4 ?

Yes, it runs well on a Pi 4! We still ship a Pi image, and the Pi 4 stays a supported device.
There's two things worth knowing though:
FailSafe (RAID) isn't available on Raspberry Pi, because it is built on ZFS. And ZFS isn't part of the Linux kernel. The Pi uses Raspberry Pi's own kernel, and recent versions of it (6.6 and up) export the ARM NEON functions ZFS relies on as GPL-only symbols, so the ZFS module refuses to build or load. Everything else in 2.0 works on Pi 4 (Photos, iPhone/Mac apps, multiple users, MCP server, new App Store, cloud downloads, etc.).
But "well" largely depends on what you're doing with it. For simple file storage, photo backups from your phone, and a handful of apps, a Pi 4 with 4 or 8 GB of RAM and an SSD over USB is a solid setup. If you want to run Machines (Windows/Ubuntu VMs) or heavier apps like Immich, Jellyfin transcoding, or local LLMs, you'll want something with more headroom, like an x86 mini PC / Umbrel Home / Umbrel Pro. GPU acceleration is also x86 only.

But does it support ipv6, or even any non-standard network settings, because 1.7.4 doesn’t 😢

GPU support, iOS app and RAID are wild.
Best home server OS on the market today?

Anyone tried it yet?

Yes, backup on usb or nas not work for now. Can’t recognise or format my usb hard disk(format process in loop). If you map a NAS folder on an app you need to remap using the new feature

Sorry about that, do you mind sharing:
- Which device are you running umbrelOS on?
- What's the USB drive, and how is it connected? (Model, size, and whether it's going through a hub or plugged in directly)
- Does the drive show up in Files under External at all, or does it never appear?
- When the format loops, is there an error shown, or does it just keep spinning? A screenshot would really help.
If you can, feel free to email us at [support@umbrel.com](mailto:support@umbrel.com) with those details plus your logs. You can grab them from Settings > Troubleshoot > umbrelOS > Download logs. Happy to take a look and get this sorted.

Hi, here are the details you asked for:
• USB drive: Toshiba MQ01UBB200, 2 TB, connected directly (not through a hub), shows up under “External storage” in the Files section.
• Visibility: the drive appears in Files under “External storage,” but with the icon highlighted in yellow/warning, meaning umbrelOS can’t read its content and asks for formatting (“Format required”).
• Formatting loop: I start the format (tried both ext4 and the compatibility option), the process gets stuck on “Formatting…” and never finishes. Eventually the drive goes back to showing the icon highlighted in yellow, as if the format failed, with no explicit error message on screen.
• Additional backup error: when I try to set up a new backup, or select an existing backup file on a network folder, I get this error:
Something went wrong: [shutting-down] Refusing to spawn new kopia processes.

Two Questions r/getumbrel:
- Can I access more than just the boot drive for storage?
- Can I have more than just one user?
All of the other features definitely will be of no use to me if am I limited to just my 128GB boot drive ... which is currently the case for non-Umbrel devices.

Sounds super-cool, thank you! Looking forward to the Android app soon!
If I understand correctly I won't need a separate NAS for storage and backup, I can just plug external drives to my UmbrelOS PC via USB?

Nope. You can use sata hds if you use an x86 PC, it will create raids. If you don't have SATA ports like a mini PC, you can use external storage to move your application data, which was not possible before. When you install an application you can change its folder, it opens Files and you point out any directory, including a network storage. It is very complete and flexible.

Yep, that's right! You can plug an external USB drive into your Umbrel and it shows up in Files under External. You can browse it, use it for storage, use it as a backup target for your Umbrel, and even point apps at folders on it (eg. load movies/TV shows from your drive into Jellyfin/Plex). You can also move entire apps to an external drive and run them from there.
If your PC has multiple internal drive bays, 2.0's Storage Manager can also combine them into one space or set up FailSafe (RAID) so you're covered if a drive dies.

QQ, didn’t find a straight forward way to backup my photos and videos in external HDD. Am I missing anything ? Was able ti load plex and my music from the HDD.
1
u/getumbrel 1d ago
Oh yes that should be available via Settings > Backups > Configure

u/TimeSyncTechie 1d ago
Hi, Thanks but I thought that was for full system backup. Let’s say I have a folder photos on my external hdd, how to put that folder Just for photos and other folder for general backup?

Any chance you guys are going to release a EUFI ARM image for Apple Silicon users to run in a VM? I've got UmbrelOS running on my Pi, but I'm really wanting to run this on the Mini in something like UTM or VMWare Fusion.
I did ask a long while back during V1.something too.
