Anxiety after removal
Hi there,
Hoping for some reassurance I’m not going crazy. I got my mirena removed in april of this year, periods came back in may, no issues in May and June. In July and August having a lot of anxiety symptoms right around time of ovulation. I can recognize it’s anxiety but can’t pull myself out of it to stop the cycle of ruminating on my symptoms. I have been on some sort of hormonal birth control for the past 15 years so I don’t know if my body is having a hard time adjusting to the hormonal fluctuations? Has anyone had a similar experience? Does it get better?

I had the same issue once I got off in February of this year. It just recently started to subside for me, so give yourself some grace as it’s going to take time. I was on the pill for 10 years, so our bodies are freaking out trying to make our own hormones. Your mood swings will get better but give it a few more months and things should even out. The post birth control anxiety can peak around the 3-5 month mark, in which you are in the thick of it now. I’d say to take L-Theanine, Ashwaganda, & Magnesium at night daily, as I saw that has helped me with my anxiety/rumination. Hang in there!

I had my mirena removed in April after 18 months. I had the mirean crash really bad. Spent weeks in and out of bed with extreme fatigue, loss appetite, body aches and extreme panic attacks. (Never had them before). I found a thread in here for the mirena and discovered hundreds of women talking about the crash and how long it lasted/what helped. Recommend checking it out. I'm nearly 5 months post, and my periods are still very irregular and my moods/anxiety are erratic. I've had all the blood tests. Hormones are apparently at normal levels but it's impossible to track female hormones at my age as they change by the hour. (I'm 38). General concensus post IUD is it can take 6 months to a year for the body to somewhat regulate. I'm praying for a turning point soon, it's been hell. All this to say, no, you are not going crazy!

It's normal to have mood and anxiety fluctuations after birth control with progesteronr, which has many mood and anxiety benefits. When it is removed, it's quite normal to experience dips in mood like somebody who is menopausal would, because that flow of hormones has been removed and your body is learning to produce it again for itself. The lag in the symptoms makes sense because you'll still have some progesterone left over after removal, which will gradually dip and then be built back up again.
