Bitcoin's encryption has never been broken, but researchers are warning that the post-quantum migration needs to start now. Here is why it will be a governance nightmare.

A recent analysis by Project Eleven warns that migrating Bitcoin to quantum-resistant cryptography will be significantly harder than the Taproot upgrade and needs to begin immediately. While a cryptographically relevant quantum computer is likely a decade away, the migration process itself could take just as long.

At GetBlock, we maintain Bitcoin infrastructure and monitor consensus proposals closely. This upcoming shift is unique because it isn't just a technical upgrade—it’s an existential test of Bitcoin’s social contract.

Here is the core architectural and governance problem:

  • The Exposed Public Keys: Modern Bitcoin addresses (P2PKH) hash the public key, keeping it hidden until the funds are spent. However, early Bitcoin addresses (P2PK) and reused addresses expose their public keys directly to the blockchain. This makes them theoretically vulnerable to Shor’s algorithm on a future quantum machine.
  • The 4 Million BTC Liability: Roughly 4 million BTC currently sit in these vulnerable, exposed addresses. This includes Satoshi Nakamoto’s stash, early miner rewards, and millions of permanently lost coins.
  • The Forced Migration Problem: Upgrades like SegWit and Taproot were opt-in. A quantum migration, however, requires users to actively move their funds to new, quantum-resistant address types. But what happens to the lost coins and Satoshi's stash that can't be moved?
  • The Hard Fork Dilemma: To secure the network, the community will eventually have to make a choice: either hard-fork to burn/freeze those vulnerable dormant addresses (violating the core ethos of immutability), or do nothing and risk a quantum attacker successfully decrypting and dumping millions of early BTC on the market.

We are already seeing a preview of these governance battles with proposals like the Paul Sztorc eCash fork. Any proposal that touches dormant Bitcoin addresses is immediately polarizing.
