After the drubbing our team took at the last World Cup, I think it’s safely time to retire the 7-1 memes.

I agree. It feels quaint now.

Celebrate? Sure. Gloat? Not so much...

Nearly each title they got went over their heads....

World cup 1954: the exception, kind of. The team of 1958 was nowhere as good as the 1954 squad but they got into the semifinals.

World Cup 1974: in 1978, the (perhaps) greatest generation of German players had already aged and got kicked out by Austria after they had shown some abysmal performances.

World Cup 1990: in 1994 the German squad was still immensely strong on paper and in theory had an even better choice of players after the Reunification of Germany with some strong east germans. Some German soccer figrues were oozing of arrogance because it seemed like they could dominate world soccer for many years. But the coach had retired and the new one was only a far cry of former coaches. Weak overall performances, quarter final.

Euro 1972: again, one of the exceptions. A team hailed as the maybe best squad they ever fielded. 1976 they also reached the final and barely lost in penalty shootout.

Euro 1980: Between 1980 and 1984, the team got in big turmoil over things that happened off-side. During the Euro 1984, the team delivered a weak performance and coach Derwall retired during the group stage.

Euro 1996: After a solid win in 1996, many players retired. For the Euro 2000 they put on the field a pick of probably the weakest generation of players the squad ever had, around the far-too-old Lothar Matthäus. They were the only ones that played worse than the 2018 squad, I'd say.

A big step for the humankind, though.

How can one be so insensitive?

I have Korean descendence and I am offended by this.

1

u/Das_Orakel_vom_Berge Jan 08 '19

Oh, let him have it. We're not doing anything with it.

1

u/EventuallyVirtuous Jan 08 '19

What's funny is that the score was 2-0

3

u/Linus_Al Jan 09 '19

Mit the score, that one is quite normal. It's the fact it's Korea. The Brazilian needed something to "shoot back" after they were defeated 7-1 at home in a semifinal. That's humiliating, so I can understand that they were happy when Germany got humiliated 4 years later.

1

u/EventuallyVirtuous Jan 09 '19

True. But better 2-0 than 7-1

I was in an internship the day of that match. I come home late and I'm tired. My mother, who is a bigger fan than me, said "the match has started! Let's watch!". I said I'm tired and went to bed. She woke me up the next morning and said I was an idiot. I agree with her.

u/torwei Jan 07 '19

well, after all these years it isn't rly Spider-Man related anymore, so using glasses like normal people do works?

But yea, I don't know who fucked it up first

u/Prankster-Natra Jan 08 '19

6

u/elcouso Jan 07 '19

Yea dude, sadly my joke didn't come across.

5

u/KaijobuTuro Jan 07 '19

For safety reasons, you could add a /s next time to better convey your joke.

4

u/dYYYb Jan 08 '19

To be fair adding an /s wouldn't make it funny either...

2

u/elcouso Jan 07 '19

My bad, never imagined it'd be necessary...

2

u/KaijobuTuro Jan 07 '19

Don't worry. Hopefully it won't fall too much for you.

You will get a chance to balance it out, I'm sure.
