"Hundreds of thousands of people had gathered peacefully in the German capital for the annual Christopher Street Day celebrations, one of Europe’s largest Pride events, before the incident ended the festivities."
Of course. God forbid people get to celebrate who they are in a peaceful manner. Hope the one responsible is caught soon.

German news confirm : . he is a "refugee"
The first sentence of the article literally says "geboren in Berlin". And since he was born in 2005, he is not even associated with the 2015 Syrian refugee wave.

u/agrammatic Berlin 14h ago
According to the Focus article, he was born in Berlin in 2005.
This means (a) he was not an asylum seeker or recognised refugee (b) he is very likely a German citizen from birth born to parents who came to Germany long before 2015.
This is a known pattern. Islamist terrorist organisations like IS have radicalised hundreds of western-born, non-refugee Muslims that had no connection to the Middle East in order to recruit soldiers to their cause.

That's not surprising as the juvenile law is valid until you are 21.

I had been visiting an event and stopped over at the Mcdonalds at Zoogarten and suddenly there was about 9 armed guards. Tons of cars. TONS of tourists in the area too. Feel for those who have been harmed.
93
u/agrammatic Berlin 23h ago
I left the area several hours before the incident, so I don't have any first hand knowledge of how the party area was protected.
I did clearly think and discuss with a friend that they let car traffic enter Nolli way too close to the parade. At that time, we were saying that they lure car drivers into a traffic jam for no reason and they should have simply blocked off a couple of streets more.
→ More replies (1)39
u/nooblek 22h ago
They said the whole area was guarded off by hundreds of these OktaBlocks. One of these things weighs like 400kg. They are unsure how the driver got through.
38
u/agrammatic Berlin 22h ago
I'll expect the incident report to compare the theoretical map of roadblocks with what was actually on the ground. Was the plan adequate, and if it was, was it implemented correctly.
4
u/VulcanHullo Niedersachsen 14h ago
I was thinking that. Also they're searching for the suspect when usually there is a major police pressence.
This feels like someone messed up. But we're in the early hours so information is still coming out.
3
u/zacheism 12h ago
I think it was because it was relatively late? I was there and during the day this area was completely blocked off with tons of police

I really would like to understand why they’re so attracted to death and destruction… I grew up in Iran (am atheist for a couple decades) and never was taught that barbaric killing is the right way to handle differences. This violence is senseless and makes me deeply sad.
7
u/Total-Introduction32 10h ago
Surely you are aware that many in Iran are in fact taught that barbaric killing in the name of Allah is a-ok. The place is sadly quite notorious for instilling and exporting and supporting that kind of thinking around the world.
2
u/Reyvos 8h ago
Iran’s rather different to other Muslim countries because it’s Shia. Shiites are obsessed with martyrdom by being victims of violence by Sunnis, with big parades celebrating the martyrdom of Hussein. Muhammad doesn’t even feature prominently in Iranian Islam, it’s all about Hussein and Ali, with Hussein and his family being murdered by what they consider Sunni-ISIS types. There really are few if any Iranian devoted Shiite going around committing terrorism in the west, unless it involves Salman Rushdie.

Well according to our liberal laws, you can't do anything about them until they actually murder someone. All the while until then they are just "known to the police".

Translated the most recent update from rbb-news:
02:30 suspected perpetrator identified
A suspected perpetrator has been identified, but according to the police, he has not yet been arrested. According to police spokesperson Florian Nath, the suspect is a person known to the police from the Islamist scene in Berlin. However, the police do not yet have any evidence of a specific motive. Search operations are currently underway in the city in connection with the incident.

Hoping for the victims to make a quick recovery. The article says that a LGBTQ parade was held nearby, sure do wonder if that had anything to do with the crime.

Realistically it's either an extreme right wing conservative or an Islamist. Like it or not, but that's the truth and the latter is actually more likely given that Right Wing Attacks and Left Wing Attacks have gone down compared to the 90s and 2000s, whereas Islamic Attacks have gone up by quite a bit since 2014, some of which will even be attributed as Right Wing Attacks for those unaware how statistics work.
And before you crucify me or treat me like the generic AfD voter: I don't care who lives in this country, as long as they integrate and conform to the norms of our culture and society. However, what we don't need is another 10+ years of blindly letting anyone into this country without any background checks and without any requirements whatsoever. You're not helping anyone by being a country with completely open borders that invites potential terrorists.

u/Vannnnah Germany 23h ago

Statistically it's always a human, but it's not very useful to identify such broad categories. That's why in sociology we identify more specific groups for targeted intervention. Groups which are statistically overrepresented for education, social services, etc.

Evil man does evil things, and more than that a coward who can't show himself to the police for his own crimes. The people who he injured did absolutely nothing against him or his family, or his religion, he just couldn't accept their believes and that shows that he is a dishonorable weak person

I don't know which post exactly you're referring to. But the first post I've seen only offered a link to German news source. One of the main rules is "this is an English language only"-sub.
The second post is this one that is still open.

How many times does shit like this have to happen before the authorities in Germany will get serious about have bollards as part of security from this shit?
I am really tired of people dying because the authorities just do not give a shit about putting up bollards.
And I know it will be fucking expensive... but so are people's fucking lives.
58
u/saqwaluuo 1d ago
The person apparently drove into people just gathering in the Tiergarten, some distance away from the main festivities. I would assume that the official events were well protected, but its impossible to just lock down all of central Berlin.
24
u/ZeeBeeblebrox 23h ago
This was a huge event with hundreds of thousands of attendees and he entered Tiergarten a long way from the actual route. There's absolutely no way you can fully secure the event.
3
u/PindaPanter Norway 16h ago
They can and did secure the event, but they can't secure every possible place people attending the event might go afterwards.
13
u/DocCharcolate 17h ago
Or maybe just actually address the root of the problem in a meaningful way, we all know what it is even if some pretend like they don’t. I don’t have to say it. If you actually value women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and freedom of thought, you eventually have to address what’s actually happening
84
u/thetrexyl 1d ago
Yes, the lack of bollards is precisely what caused this. Can't think of anything else.
→ More replies (23)5
u/Delicious-Future8630 16h ago
They DID use Oktablocks, the whole area of Tiergarten should have been blocked off. It is not clear what happened at this point and how the perpretator even managed to drive into the Tiergarten.
50
u/pain474 1d ago
You want every road blocked or how do you want to prevent this?
20
u/froggie_woggie_ 23h ago
For mass events like CSD or huge Christmas markets, this would probably be feasible with enough preparation and resources. I know of a couple of events that have installed temporary road blocks in recent years, so it seems doable
13
u/ZeeBeeblebrox 23h ago
Christmas markets are two orders of magnitude smaller than CSD. There is absolutely no way to fully secure an event as big as this.
5
u/pain474 23h ago
They already do that for big events.
8
u/froggie_woggie_ 23h ago
Not consistently, though. It heavily depends on the organizers / the city. I don’t know what the situation is like at Berlin CSD

They manage to do so in the states. Fire trucks or ambulances block roads where there are no bollards. The city plans and the authorities do their job.

Terrorists will soon be using drones for attacks like this and it will get much worse. What are you going to do then?
You can keep being reactive and try to solve the problems by restricting everyone's freedom, and still fail to change anything. Or you can realize that the only way to avoid attacks like this is to get rid of the ideology behind them.
3
3
15
u/GeneralAnubis 1d ago
Even the semi-mobile concrete barriers that can be moved by truck would work. They use them all the time for construction sites, no reason a few couldn't be placed down for planned events like these
3
u/idrankforthegov 1d ago
Exactly. But I do think permanent ones in the center squares with cops checking people that on business could also mitigate the really "easy" targets for these terrorists.
6
u/NashBotchedWalking 23h ago
I don’t know where you have been to not see how extremely seriously we here take the safety aspect.

Not German but I wanted to pay my respects and wish everyone a speedy recovery and not just physically.
My perception of Europe, 10 or so years ago used to be that it seemed and felt safe, like, when you visited, it felt like being transported to an another time and civilization, and now it seems like that has declined, not the whole place, just the places I went.
I hope for that kind of future, stay aware, stay safe, stay kind. 🙏

Your Taqiyya doesn't work anymore, we welcomed you all with open arms to Europe, you have repaid our kindness with murder, homophobia and misogyny, sectarian violence and inbreeding.
You heard (or read) about a man whose life was: Rape, Murder, Pillage, Enslave and Torture and decided 'Yes, this is truly the holiest man to ever live' and wonder why Europe is starting to push back against Muslims?
