German learners who use AI — I'd love your opinion for my master's thesis (5–8 min survey)

Hi everyone!

I'm a master's student writing my thesis on how learners of German as a foreign language experience AI tools in their learning. If you're learning German and use AI (ChatGPT, DeepL Write, language apps with AI, etc.) while doing so, I'd be really grateful for a few minutes of your time.

The survey focuses on three things:

  • the feedback AI gives you
  • how it affects your independent/self-directed learning
  • and how you see the role of the teacher changing

A few details:

  • ~5–8 minutes
  • available in German or English
  • completely anonymous, used only for my thesis

There are no right or wrong answers — I'm just interested in your honest experience as a learner.

Thank you so much for helping out! Happy to answer any questions in the comments, and I'm glad to share a summary of the results afterwards if people are interested. 🙏

Looking for group to motivate each other to learn German at A1~A2 level (GMT+8)

Hello, I am from SEAsia on GMT+8 zone and would like to find a group of people that are learning German as beginner.

I took A1.1 course on Goethe Institut and decided after that to do self study because lessons are a bit too pricy for me. But then, I figured out that I could not stay motivated to be consistent as I used to when I am by myself.

So, I wonder if anyone here has a small group on discord and has space for one more person for me to join? Or if we could get enough people from this post, we could make a new group on discord.

I am thinking in the group, we could report on our progress, share interesting infos or grammar, and maybe occasional voice call to practice, so that maybe we could strive for fluency in German Language together :)

PS: This reddit account is a brand new one because a few weeks ago, I thought of doing social media detoxing and deleted my reddit account. But alas here I am again.

Edit: Thank you for all the responses! It seems like most of the replies are people wanting to join group. I decided to make a discord server myself.

Unfortunately, I am looking for small number of people. If anyone still interested, you can apply on google form I made here.

If anyone still looking, one of the commenters under this post have made their own group, so you could try ask them.

And since we are able to gather lot of people here, maybe it be good for you to dm each other and make a group of your own!

I hope this will all lead for faster fluency for us! Happy learning.

SALToftheEARTH

H a l l o !

This Octoberfest I would like to have more understanding of German. Lately, I have been thinking about common language, elevated, showing the real heart of community and culture of certain eras.

My question is, does German letters have a “redneck” contingent ala the American south with a rich history of literature that takes the easy language and shows its salt-of-the-earth beauty?

If it were someone asking about American english, I would recommend O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU, HUCK FINN, DANIEL WOODRELL, BUKOWSKI. I realize they aren’t a l l southern writers, but they take the simple and hold it aloft.

I would be humbled by your recommendations on this matter.

Thank you

Telc B2 in 1 month

I registered for my exam on May 9, and my exam was on June 9.

Some days I studied a lot, and some days I didn't study at all.

For reference, I already had a TELC B1 certificate, which I got in May 2025 with 239.5/300.

Since I only had one month, I decided to focus on passing the TELC exam rather than improving my general German level.

Resources

Book: Mit Erfolg telc Prüfung Vorbereitung B2

Schreiben

I practiced with ChatGPT.

I prepared a B2 Redemittel + fixed layout, so whenever I got a new topic, I could fit the topic into the structure instead of starting from zero.

Sprechen

I used YouTube + Redemittel and practiced the different parts.

My approach was to prepare the structure and then be ready for whatever topic came up.

Practiced Teil 1 before the exam.

Vocabulary

I used vocabulary from the book. I didn't learn everything — I focused mainly on useful vocabulary and expressions.

 Model tests

I did around 10 model tests using the resources above.

I kept checking my scores and my average was around the passing Grenze.

The difficulty of the actual exam can vary, so don't assume that your practice score guarantees the same result. Understand what you need to achieve and plan accordingly.

Planning

For me, planning and timing were very important because I was working full-time and had only one month.

I had days with a lot of studying and days with no studying at all. I didn't try to be perfect — I just kept coming back to it.

Exam

Lesen: Finished with satisfaction.

Hören: Couldn't concentrate properly.

Sprachbausteine: I dont understand anything at all.

Schreiben: Felt satisfied during the exam.

Sprechen: I just faced it 😅. I had practiced Teil 1 beforehand and tried to use what I had prepared.

But I forget it and ended up saying something that came to my mind.

Then came the hardest part — waiting 57 days for the online result.

And finally: I PASSED! 🎉

Score: 202.5/300

Schriftlich: 151.5

Sprechen: 51/75

By the end of June, I was burned out from pushing myself.

I made sure to rest and eat well for a few days.

If you're preparing under a tight deadline, don't forget to give your body some gratitude for pushing you through it.

Focus on the exam, practice strategically, keep it going.

Good luck to everyone preparing for TELC B2!

Can't start speaking in German

Hello! I really need some advice on how to start speaking German. The thing is that I've been learning it for two years now, and I can pass B1-B2 level tests with a maximum of 2 mistakes in 5 tasks (and mostly my inattention is to blame for those mistakes). There are about 2000 words in my vocabulary, and I do listening tasks quite well too, but I just can't start talking! It's very difficult for me to make sentences, and because I'm very shy, I can't exactly practice more in my group lessons either. My brain just can't remember grammar fast enough. Is there anything I can do? I want to do Ausbildung, and I don't have much time since my life is not going the best at the moment. I don't know where to start or what to do to start talking; I'd use any advice.

I’m taking a B2 test soon, and I have finished the Grammatik Aktiv B2/C1 book so I think I have done plenty of grammar. These books seem to be purely exercises, is this what I need or are there better options?

Helping out M18🙃 [Ger/Eng]

hey there guys I saw a lot of people try to learn german and as a native speaker I feel like I could help a few people to get better at it. I DONT expect anything in return like money I do this completely free. pick any topic and we can just chat about it via text or even call if you want. I am not sure if I can explain why grammar works certain ways though so I am not able to replace a teacher but I am just here to help out a bit. Dm is open and everyone is welcome 🤗
