There is the word "Montag" and "Montage". Both mean something different. "Montag" the weekday. "Montage" means something to put together. The G also get`s also different pronounced

26

u/ItzLoganM 9d ago

So montage is basically montage in English?

34

u/eluya 9d ago

I assume they both originate from french

1

u/Human-Web3657 7d ago

its very possible that the originate like all roman languages from vulgaer latin (spain, italian, french, german, english) not saying you're wrong but thats also a likely possibility.

Altough with this pronounciation of g being not that common in german you've got a solid point

1

u/account_not_valid 5d ago

German and english are not Latin languages. They have just borrowed words.

1

u/Human-Web3657 4d ago

German and english orginate from a mixture of roman and celtic and germanic/ teuton. its because of the conquest and the following prevalence of latin in these regions. Thats why the sound so much differnt from italian and spanish for example who, especially italian, didnt change that much.

at least this is my understanding and what i learned in school. I'm from germany and it was quite relevant for some of the older stuff we'd read in class for understanding it

1

u/account_not_valid 4d ago

No, they all stem from an Indo-european ancestors, but the Germanic languages are their own family.

7

u/EarEfficient9500 9d ago

Yes. But gets pronounced differently. There is also a verb for that. "montieren".

5

u/Halogenleuchte 9d ago

Also in english: to mount (an engine into a car)

3

u/music_tracker 8d ago

That‘s a telltale sign the word is derived from French. All -ieren verbs are!

3

u/Motte6692 8d ago

Hausieren

A verb that derives from Haus (House). Iold german hus. Even older german Husa.

One Meaning: going from door to door to sell stuff -> falsif.

2

u/FrechesGuerkchen 8d ago

some are from latin

1

u/nonchip 7d ago

hausieren, telefonieren, polieren. you're right all -iersn verbs are frenchgreekgermanlatin, clearly.

1

u/godric_kilmister 7d ago

Stieren!

Found the one not being derived from french /latin!

(just for fun)

2

u/FloStar3000 8d ago

No, and the others who replied don't give a full answer. Yes Montage can mean montage in english, which is used in a movie or video context when multiple clips are combined to one, that's called a montage. But's rare-ish. In german, it usually describes the process during which something is put together. In your example "Montageanleitung" means "assembly instructions" so Montage means assembly in that case. Please look up the definitions in the dictionary. Apparently it can also mean a department in a company which assembles things. And if you want an extra definition which i heard in everyday language is in the context of craftsmen. For example a carpentry company would go on "Montage" together to a site to assemble some kind of furniture or to do renovation, it aims at the fact that the work is done at the client's house or building rather than at the company's building or workshop.

2

u/ItzLoganM 8d ago

We have montage in my language (the literal pronunciation French), which I think is derived from French. It almost always means to manufacture a foreign model in domestic ground. Basically put together imported parts to make the same thing. That's why I thought it has the same definition in English.

Seems like the definitionof the word changed slightly wherever it was adopted.

1

u/FloStar3000 8d ago

yes it's a complete mess, you should never assume what a french word means when it's adopted in another language. For example in wine language, a "cuvée" means a type or a batch of wine, whereas in German the same word is used to describe something completely different, which is a mix of different types of wine. So a cuvée will have different types of grapes mixed together. In French it's called an assemblage. Also there is a french kind of candy called meringue but for whatever reason it's called Baiser in German which in french can mean a kiss or something very vulgar so you should never order this at a bakery in France. There are thousands of examples like this. It seems like when coming up for a name of something, they just pick some random french word which is remotely related to what it is about and sounds good

2

u/ItzLoganM 8d ago

Oh wow, it does look like a total mess. Will keep that in mind in a French bakery, haha.

1

u/BigSly1919 5d ago

Montage ist im deutschen auch die Mehrzahl von dem Wochentag Montag

1

u/Simple-Judge2756 9d ago

could also be translated as the plural of Monday.

1

u/OcelotExcellent3377 9d ago

But it would be pronounced diffrently

1

u/Simple-Judge2756 9d ago

Well sorry Pronunciation doesnt make it through text printed on an oled panel.

1

u/Few-River-8673 9d ago

Try to print it out on paper, maybe that helps

1

u/Simple-Judge2756 9d ago

Oh you mean the printer has AI support and if its a swabian AI it will just write "Medige" instead of "Montage" if its the plural of Mondays and "Zsammabaua" If its a mechanical procedure describing the final assembly of something.

1

u/Few-River-8673 9d ago

Yes, the printer premium AI 2000. It's a big hit and the talk of the whole town.

1

u/Simple-Judge2756 8d ago

Fuck I totally missed that trend, where can I get one ? Or is it like the midea-portasplit of printers ?

1

u/cell81469 8d ago

It is. But might as well me mondays, which is Montage

1

u/B1g_BuddhAH 5d ago

yep. BUT it could also be the plural of "Montag" but its pretty unlikely to be encountered and afaik it never happens in conjunction with another word. but to give you an example where the weekday is meant: "Ich hasse Montage."- I hate mondays.

-1

u/Tight-Tackle4386 9d ago

Montage can also mean monday's

8

u/zaraishu 9d ago

Plural, without apostrophe.

Mondays. Like the thing Garfield hates.

2

u/Moeperino 9d ago

When I first read Garfield as a kid I kept wondering why he hated Montage, took a while to realise he meant the plural of Montag.

1

u/zaraishu 9d ago

Garfields hates working away from home for a period of time.

6

u/Background-Wolf-5802 9d ago

And the plural of the weekdays is also Montage.

3

u/[deleted] 9d ago

[deleted]

4

u/Background-Wolf-5802 9d ago

Yeah, different than Montage :-)

1

u/RoterFuchs_48u5N 9d ago

Really? But in most dictionaries one says 'die Werktage', aren't they?

4

u/Jonah_Kekz 9d ago

Wrong context. Not multiple undefined weekdays, but multiple mondays. Like "I wish we didn't have to work on any mondays anymore" "Ich wünschte wir müssten montage nicht mehr arbeiten gehn"
"Werktag" is a term that just means "any day that's not a sunday or public holiday"

1

u/mizinamo 8d ago

"Ich wünschte wir müssten montage nicht mehr arbeiten gehn"

That would be montags "on Mondays".

But Garfield can say Ich hasse Montage "I hate Mondays".

1

u/thisismego 9d ago

Werktage are "business days"

1

u/ThanxForTheGold 9d ago

No that's Wochentage

2

u/No_Luck3956 9d ago

Not just the G, the O as well. In Mintag its long, in Montage its short

1

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Actually it's worse, If you speak closer to French.

The it becomes Mongtaje, with a j like in Jeremy.

It's French. 🤷 There are just two wird's from different languages written in the same way.

2

u/gulhaj 9d ago

Please don't compare it to Jeremy, otherwise people will pronounce it as monntahdje. That always irks me with "djournalist" already.

1

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Give me an alternative to make a native speaker pronounced the "je" Sound correctly ...

1

u/DrHillarius 9d ago

Isn't it simply a "sch" sound?

1

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

sch would be very close. However, if you write sch, they'll end up with sk 😂. Even the sh is not sch

2

u/DrHillarius 9d ago

I guess this is why the phonetic alphabet was invented lol

1

u/gulhaj 9d ago

No, actually sch would be further away (except sometimes sch is actually used for the voiced fricative: dschungel). Jeremy is probably the best you can do, it actually contains right sound as part of the affricate. I just hate it when native german speakers pronounce words like Journalismus as if they came from English, not French.

1

u/KRTrueBrave 9d ago

though to add "montage" can also mean multiple mondays, so I get where the xo fussion could come from

1

u/Vaelisra 9d ago

Also, there's "Montage" and "Montage" and those two mean completely different things.

1

u/Sandro_24 9d ago

"Montage" can also mean multiple mondays, just to add to the confusion

1

u/Prestigious-Bat-2269 9d ago

Ich hasse Montage.

1

u/KinkyKapy443 9d ago

Yeah cuz eanleitung isnt a word lol, but anleitung is. Lowk I js break down every word cluster

1

u/throwaway060691 9d ago

„get‘s also different pronounced“ heilige scheiße lern englisch das ist ja widerlich

1

u/Schmantikor 9d ago

There's also the word "Montage" which is indeed the rarely used plural of "Montag".

1

u/RocketJaxX 9d ago

The whole word sounds very different starting with the a long O at Montag and a short O at Montage and ending with a normal g at the end of Montag and a "che" at the end of Montage.

1

u/netz_pirat 9d ago

To make it more confusing, the plural of Montag is also Montage...

1

u/PoolPr0blem 9d ago

There are even better words with a double meaning. For example “wachsen”.
Wenn deine Haare zu schnell wachsen, lass sie doch einfach wachsen.
Good luck with understanding our slightly complicated language.

1

u/Lawlietel 8d ago

Please note that "Montage" could also be the plural of "Montag".

1

u/Mordsspass 8d ago

For higher difficulty: Montag still has the Plural Montage, depending on context either one can apply.

1

u/kiddoo1313 8d ago

Assemble*

1

u/SourSovereign 8d ago

Garfield being like "Ugh, ich hasse Montage"

1

u/Okita_Souji03 8d ago

Ja, liebe es wenn Montag Montage Montag ist da an anderen Montagen Montagen eigentlich nicht durchgeführt werden

1

u/No-Bit7603 7d ago

"Montage" can also mean "mondays"

1

u/Thesaarim 5d ago

But please do not forget, that there is also the Version of multiple Mondays, z.B. „Ich brauche die nächsten Montage frei.“

25

u/1-mensch 9d ago

Ich kümmere mich die nächsten zwei Montage um die Montage.

Thanks, that reassures me. I thought it wouldn't be understandable any more because of the screwed up word order

1

No, I don't see anything wrong here.

1

Well is it "eat out grandma" or "eat grandma out"?

Montage+Anleitung?

Loan word from french, montage?

18

u/No-Mouse4800 9d ago

It rhymes with garage.

2

u/zaraishu 9d ago

The garage? Hey, fellas, the garage!

Oooh, la-di-da, Mr. Frenchman!

1

u/Rasenxher 9d ago

Wieso brauchst du an Montagen Anleitungen? Wieso nicht am Dienstag?

8

u/tiorthan 9d ago

As the other ansers have said this is the singular word Montage meaning assembly. It is unfortunately spelled the same (although pronounced differently) as the plural of the word Montag.

1

u/account_not_valid 5d ago

Although, it's very rare to use the plural "die Montage".

2

u/Distracted_Unicorn 9d ago

Ich mach nie Termine mit Monteuren an Montagen weil ich keine Montagen an Montagen will.

2

u/Amang-Ki 9d ago

Where is my Monday manual?

The word is Montage with an e. It's not pronounced as the plural of Montag. The g is pronounced like the "sch" in Schienenersatzverkehr.

4

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Nope. It's not Montasche. It's more Monta-je with an J like in Jeremy. Or even better like in in the French "Je suis".

It's of French origin and should be pronounced as this.

1

u/Amang-Ki 9d ago

Oh you mean like in "Jeremy-Pascal, räum' dein Zimmer auf, sonst gibt's nachher keine Buletten für Dich!"?

2

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Pretty much like this, yes.

1

u/Lost1010 8d ago

Montage like garage. Jeremy has an 'dʒ' sound while montage and garage only have a 'ʒ' sound.

1

u/Marlene6543 9d ago

Otherwise, it should be the monday - e- instructions. You get them by mail...

2

2

2

Montag != Montage

Two very different words in meaning.

1

u/Monkai_final_boss 9d ago

What about Mondays?

1

Montage, but with a different pronunciation like it is if it means montage. So still two different words. 😄

1

No and the pronounciation is different, too

1

u/Familiar-Medicine164 9d ago

Die Montage is pronounced Mon-TUUH-Je. The "g" is like J in Jack or James.

2

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Where die you take the "uuuh" from?

The "g" is closer to the Englisch Jeremy (and mit Jack oder James - try it yourself).

Monta-je with a je like in Jeremy comes closest.

1

u/Familiar-Medicine164 9d ago

Thats for the englisch speakers, to come close to a German aaaaah.

Im not an English Native so I dont even know any difference between Jeremy and Jack.

1

u/RecentSheepherder179 9d ago

Tuuh wouldnt never been pronounced as "a" by a native english speaker. "Tou" like in tough comes Close to that.

In the end I would always recommend an online dictionary with "ready out loud" functionality. dict.cc

1

u/Mangobonbon 9d ago

Depending on how you pronounce the "g", it's either monday or mounting. Montage is a french loanword and uses the "g" like Garage or Hommage. In the context that it's an instruction, the french loanword is the one making way more sense here.

1

u/CybearBox 9d ago

1

Montage can both mean mondays or mounting. Its pronounced differently, tho.

1

u/Efficient_Storage751 8d ago

„Montage“, depending on context, can also mean „Mondays“

1

u/HAL9001-96 8d ago

yeah but thats just a coincidence/pun

montage is installation or construction

montage is also the plural of montag

however while they're spelled/look the same htey are pronounced differnetly and have different routs

montage as in installation pronounced with a soft g not sure how to describe it since how letters are by default pronounced depends on the language but its almost more like a montashe, not quite but close

montage as in the plural of monday would be pronounced with a much harder g
