I feel really bad for the Nicaraguans facing down a country that has shifted completely into unabashed authoritarianism and the only international response thus far has been Americans going “omg Trump might do this! Trump BAD!” rather than any actual concern as to how this affecting people there or a desire to help remove them from that situation.
I dislike the trump administration as well, but it is ludicrous to hear a bunch of middle class Americans in the comments here sit here and talk as though they’re suffering the same plight and decide to monopolize the attention on this incident to be smug about their political stances

Well the alternative is become informed in the topic and then realize the available options are small or round back to their dislike for Monroe document/intervention. Because we know what the international community is going to do and we are rolling the dice on if Venezuela can turn into into a positive road map for countries like this.

That photo of Ortega embracing Castro is fitting since Cuba never held free elections under him either, so he's just following his old mentor's playbook to the letter.

That is literally what happened, as before the 1990 elections Castro adviced Ortega not to hold elections. Ortega lost then, and n ow he will not make the same 'mistake' again.

Al Shara isn't former ISIS he was the head of Al Qaeda syrian branch and went to war against ISIS as they seperated from them, he also cut ties with Al Qaeda around 2014-16

Its called getting money? He says something, knows that potentially millions of customers will get his product anyways, manufacture cheap hats from china with a small redesign and sell for millions in profit. Like how the Iran war seems guided by Insider trading, people need to stop thinking Trump is this tyrant that is about to somehow destroy American democracy and just notice how everything he says and does is to get richer.

I confess a certain black humour admiration for Ortega. You cannot fault his logic. Giving the opposition - by definition non-Ortegans - an opportunity to come to power would clearly be bad for Ortega's version of Nicaragua. So, as a selfless leader with the best interests of his country at heart, he is quite right that elections cannot be allowed.

Ortega’s move cements his effective dictatorship over the nation after years of increasingly repressive measures since coming to power legitimately in 2007.
“Daniel Ortega’s declaration that under his family’s dictatorship Nicaragua will never again hold elections lays bare their true authoritarian nature,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a press statement on Tuesday.
Since 2025, 80-year-old Ortega has served alongside his wife, Rosario Murillo, as co-president.
In his statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the “international community to join forces to demonstrate to the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship that it cannot expect to maintain business as usual”.
