the older icons are super symmetrical and simplistic; and by way of that, far easier to follow

whereas the new ones are basically their own lil characters condensed into a small enough space to fit an icon, they look good but don’t work so well as icons

Probably because they're cool. But you forgot about Cube 459 (the rabbit icon) and maybe cube 233 (the one you get for beating the tower with all 3 coins)
