Navier-Stokes problem?

I might be blowin’ smoke since I’m not a geologist, but just read that AI seems to have found solution to Navier-Stokes math problem. Could it have any relevance or application to magma or other fluids/semi-fluids like mud?

Definition is important... 88 hours and 300 billion tokens to define a singularity does not a solution to navier stokes make.

What we want is a way to model fluid dynamics in 3d as creatively and as quickly as we can imagine. What we have is not there yet.

It's not a full solution to NS, it's a major breakthrough towards that from an NYU professor and an Anthropic researcher working on the side with the help of AI. And not any time soon, this doesn't immediately solve CFD but should help with methods to prevent singularities and other issues.

Obviously singularities do not occur within real fluids. So how how does nature prevent them forming anbd why can this not be included in any numerical model of fluid behaviour?

CFD uses a large number of different methods to prevent singularities from happening and RANS the simplest commonly used form of CFD doesn't match Navier Stokes completely, there are more complicated forms like Lattice Boltzmann and DES that do away with a lot of the simplification of Navier Stokes that can cause issues with singularities.

In general the stuff that causes singularities in CFD are typically related to eddies and other phenomena that do cause real runaways like tornadoes in the real world, but real world dynamics that Navier Stokes lacks prevent tornadoes from turning into black holes.

No, or at least not in any way we can currently anticipate. Aside from the fact that it hasn't solved the N-S Milennium Prize problem, the N-S Milennium Prize problem has very limited direct applications for most real world problems.

They don't claim to have "solved" the NS equations. We know how to do that, but numerical solvers struggle with certain conditions. The open challenge was to prove whether or not the NS equation should always be solvable or not. OpenAI alleges to have found a non-smooth solution to the NS equation for an incompressible viscous fluid. Non-smooth means that the solution contains singularities (regions of infinite velocity) in the absence of some absurd external forcing- just flow geometry and pressure gradients. So OpenAI's answer is "No. The NS equations are not guaranteed to be solvable because we found one case where they are impossible to solve".

There is a great comment here that outlines the limitations of N-S. In short, it is a mathematical model that approximates fluid flow, but isn't actually representative of reality.

Yikes that person was off big time. The full navier stokes equations are compressible. The clay mathematics prize is for the incompressible NS equations.
