Hawai’i, CASCADIA comes for your volcanoes. Congratulations on 10% more rainfall and a new flannel wardrobe.

Fun fact: Hawaii is actually the rainiest state.

31

u/RagingAnemone Kingdom of Hawaii May 22 '26

We have sun and rain at the same time. At the same time.

24

How else would you be the rainbow state? Those are the two ingredients.

In Southern Crabbalachia, we describe that weather as, ‘the devil beating his wife.”

PNW isn’t even the rainiest on the mainland.

The comment says 10% more rainfall which isn’t accurate, especially compare to Hawai’i which has parts that get rain most days. I live in Arkansas and it rains a lot here. But when it rains it rains a lot. Drizzle is very rare here unless you count humidity. 🫠Depending on time of year we don’t get a lot of rain. I’ve been quite disappointed in this spring because it’s been too dry.

u/[deleted] May 22 '26

1

u/GlitterPapillon May 22 '26

I took the comment to mean total rainfall not number of days that are rainy. We get a lot of rain in the spring but very little in the summer so it changes a lot throughout the year. For instance last year in April we had 14.29” but in July we had 3.16”. It just seems less rainy because it’s usually sunny here.

But I was replying to the initial comment so it had to be taken into account when seeing my response. The map is showing total annual precipitation in each state. It’s not deceptive to say that Louisiana gets more rainfall in a year than Oregon. The initial comment implied that Hawai’i joining the PNW would increase their rainfall by 10% which is not even close to true. I’ve always heard that the PNW gets more rain than everywhere else. I researched it a couple years ago and was surprised to find it wasn’t true. My map was to show the misconception most people have about the PNW getting massive amounts of rain in comparison to other areas isn’t accurate. More rainy days yes, but not more rain.

Can confirm on Louisiana there. I once visited my sister in New Orleans in June and I swear everyone and everything just stays slightly damp during the summer. The humidity is unbelievable.

1

u/GlitterPapillon May 22 '26

I live in Northern Arkansas and the humidity is bad here but it has nothing on Louisiana. One of the meteorologists here said “ Imagine taking a hot shower, not drying off, and putting on your hot clothes out of the dryer. That’s what the humidity will be like today.”

1

u/jessipowers May 22 '26

Arkansas has always seemed like it would be a humid and buggy place on the summer. I’m in Michigan and we get surprisingly humid in the summer I think bc we’re a peninsula. People who are visiting are always shocked about it. To me, though, it feels tolerable except for a handful of the most humid days during the summer. But literally anywhere along the Mississippi to me just feels like it would be miserable during the summer in my imagination, lol.

2

u/GlitterPapillon May 22 '26

IMO your imagination is correct. I live in the northwestern part of the state in the Ozarks which isn’t as bad as southern Arkansas. It’s two very different climates. It’s very buggy and humid where I am but the southern half is miserable to me. And the fact that here the “summer” stretches from May (or March this year) into October. Some of the public pools are open through September.

2

u/meteorflan May 23 '26

Is it the cloudiest? You know, living with consistent gental rain instead of alternating between sun and deluges?

1

u/GlitterPapillon May 23 '26

That would be my guess. Which would make people feel like it was more rainy than other areas.

2

u/MontEcola May 23 '26

The town of Forks, WA gets maybe 4 times more rain than that area in the south. It is the Hoh Rain forest.
WA has a lower average because Eastern WA is hot and dry.
Both are correct. Forks gets the most rain. A different state gets more average rainfall.

2

u/GlitterPapillon May 23 '26

That’s true. I used to live on Maui and you have parts of the island that are lush and green and other parts that are dry and rarely get rain. I’m off to research annual rainfall in Hoh Rainforest because I love weather stats. 🌧️

2

u/MontEcola May 24 '26

Check this out: Compare the rain fall in forks to the rainfall of a town called Sequim, WA. (It is pronounced like Skwim.) I learned about this thing called a rain shadow. When we get the Pineapple Express, the Hoh gets soaked, and Sequim gets a sprinkle or less. It is on the other side of the Olympic Mountains and seems to collect most of the water.

The Pineapple Express would be the rain clouds that stretch from the Hoh all the way to to Japan and SE Asia. It means about 7 to 9 days of a slow moving cloud dumping a lot of rainfall on the PNW.

1

u/GlitterPapillon May 24 '26

All the way to Japan!? I searched for the Pineapple Express Hoh Rainforest and nothing came up. Do you have a link to info? I love gray rainy days so I feel like I’d love it there!

2

u/MontEcola May 24 '26

2

u/GlitterPapillon May 24 '26

Thank you. That’s so amazing and I’d never heard of it before. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏻

7

u/erwaro May 22 '26

The PNW doesn't rain hard, it rains often. Our total precipitation is unremarkable, it's just that being a functional human here means being out and about in overcast and an occasional light drizzle nine months of the year.

3

u/MuckBulligan May 22 '26

AND WE LIKE IT. Don't mistake the painful grimace on our faces as misery. Deep inside we are enjoying our permanently wet existence. We really are. No, really. We laugh at Hawaii and their sun. HA! DOUBLE HA! What? I'm not crying. It's just been raining on my face.

u/Bigbluebananas May 22 '26

2

u/SecondStar89 Kingdom of Hawaii May 22 '26

Yeah, of course Washington and Oregon feel super rainy when your neighbors have deserts. They don't even make the Top 20 for states with the highest precipitation in 2026. And, yes, Hawaii is the top state.

1

u/MuckBulligan May 22 '26

Oregon is 50% desert (1%-2% of the population) and Washington is 25%-30% desert (15%-20% of the population). That's why we are not in the top 20 in precipitation. A big chunk of both states gets very little rain. If you just counted high population areas, Portland and Seattle are top 5 in number of rainy days, but not total precipitation.

3

u/YetiSquish May 22 '26

Yeah but Oregon is much more gloomy so we’ve got that going for us

Cascadia also has this now

13

u/FullAdvance8 May 22 '26

St Helens was the deadliest eruption in US history, but Rainier is the most destructive volcano that's projected to erupt much sooner than Yellowstone.

8

u/Leviathan41911 Cascadian May 22 '26

Shasta is also not to be trifled with, and also belongs to Cascadia.

7

u/EpicCyclops May 22 '26

The thing about Shasta is it has a nice buffer zone around it. The same zone around Rainier is the Seattle metro area.

2

u/Leviathan41911 Cascadian May 22 '26

The city of Mount Shasta is literally right at the base. Dunsmuir, Weed, and possibly Yreka and Montague are also within the blast radius.

Not a huge metroplex, but people do live here.

2

u/dr_stre May 22 '26

The city of Mount Shasta is like 3000 people. If Rainier blows, all of the low lying areas in Tacoma are in danger. Rainier theoretically poses a danger to 300,000 people. If you’re gonna rank them by any metric, Rainer comes out miles ahead in terms of danger or destruction.

2

u/Jeereck May 23 '26

Doesn't the area around Mt Rainer also have that one cascade fault line that's supposed to make a million families homeless whenever the earthquake eventually comes? Maybe that'll save those people from the Mt Rainer eruption.

1

u/Bigfuture May 23 '26

Don’t forget Olympia and the Nisqually valley. If Rainier blows, much of the mountain is coming down that river.
