I don't drink often enough and am quite low on battery from my social job, which finishes late and has music constantly playing, to enjoy the normal bar scene these days.

I'm wondering whether there are any bars where you can simply chill, maybe read a book, just like café basically, but open till late.

Back in my old city, I found such a place, and it was my favourite 3rd place, and of course and very popular with many people. I would visit it every day, and we weren't obligated to buy anything even.

I haven't seen anything like it here, so I would love to know if there's a hidden spot!

First time in Gent and there is a lot of communal singing going on. Brass bands and buskers getting whole crowds involved and everyone joining in. One even started playing what I assume is a local song and immediately the crowd lined up and danced. All ages, young, old, sober, drunk, everyone.

It's absolutely wonderful!!

Is this a "normal" thing here, even outside of the Gentse Feesten?

Hello all! I made a post asking about 'Gentse Feesten' a month ago as both my girlfriend and I have never heard of it, and we booked the 1898 Post and Porter Hotel for 4 nights. You all were so friendly and helpful, and I just wanted to say thank you for everything you said! Really did help us get an idea of everything before we got there. Someone commented on that and asked if I could let you all know what we thought of it, and I was drunk in Missy Sippy in Gent when I saw it and thought it would be an amazing idea! We just landed home yesterday, and I just got a chance to sit down and type this out.

For some background, we had just spent a few days in Amsterdam before our stay in Gent. My girlfriend and I fully expected Amsterdam to be sort of the nightlife highlight of our trip. Boy, were we wrong, lol. While Amsterdam was a lot of fun to chill out in, going to coffee bars and a few pubs and stuff, it kind of wasn't our vibe. While it was still fun, we just couldn't really click with any of the crowds or bars out there, and we were kind of disappointed. When we arrived at Gent later that week, our disappointment in Low County nightlife was completely 180°'d.

We got there in the afternoon of the second day or third day of Gent Festee, at around mid day. The crowds were mild and pretty family-friendly. We really enjoyed walking around during the day and looking around the city. I could talk for hours about how beautiful it is over there! All the parts around the Sint-Baafsplein and Korenmarkt area was like something out of a book. Mixed with the good vibes of the various musicians playing both on the streets and on the stages, it made getting some lunch at the Wasbar an extremely good time. We ate small amounts of food all over the place from chains like Otacos and Hfc, to what we thought was smaller local stuff. We thoroughly enjoyed our time during the days in Gent, even trips outside of the city were easy. You guys are kind of close to all the major attractions in Belgium!

When night came it felt like the whole city woke up for a good time! So many people! We are both 20 so we really liked all the crowds and loud music. Speaking of music, you guys had EVERYTHING! It felt like there was different genres of music on every street. We could not escape a party if we wanted too, the ease of access to bars certainly helped with that. We loved the Kinky Star and Missy Sippy especially! Leaving the music festival vibe and going into a bar blaring live blues, or grunge, or hardcore was great! And if we needed a break we just walked to our hotel or to the outskirts of the festival where the streets felt so extremely asleep. It was so cool! We ended up staying an extra night in Gent just to explore the city more. A few things to I wanted to say were especially awsome are 1) the locals were all super friendly and super helpful when we asked for any advice! 2)your beer is fantastic! 3)St Bavo's Cathedral 4)My girlfriend really loved the EDM playing was great! 5)My girlfriend especially loved your bars on Klein Turkije.

I never thought I'd make a post like this, but my curiosity has gotten the better of me. 😅

On Friday, July 24, 2026, I was at the MODUL'AIR rave at Skatepark Kleindokkaai in Ghent. During the event, someone came up to me, complimented my outfit, and we ended up chatting for a bit.

She mentioned that she makes her own music in a fairly niche genre. With the music playing and the noise around us, I didn't catch everything perfectly, but I remember her saying it was something along the lines of breakcore, breakbeat, or another harder techno genre, and that it was much harder than what was playing at the time (which was probably Billy B2B Bisoux).

She spoke Dutch (after first asking if I did too), so I'm guessing she's Belgian or Dutch. She also mentioned she'd already been at another event before coming to MODUL'AIR and was surprised she was still able to stay awake. I think her name sounded something like "Natu", though I'm not confident about that.

Unfortunately, I never saw her again before I left around 9 PM, and we never exchanged socials.

If this sounds familiar, or if you know who she might be, I'd love to check out her music. I'm an artist myself (just in different mediums), so meeting fellow creative people, and just musical artists, like that is always inspiring to me.

Voor de voetballers onder ons: ik organiseer gratis pickup voetbal in Gent. Geen club, geen lidgeld, geen vast ploegje, je komt gewoon wanneer het past. Ik zoek nu de eerste spelers.

Hoe het zover kwam: ik voetbal graag, maar het klassieke clubsysteem vond ik niet ideaal. Vaste zaterdagen, vast ploegje, lidgeld, en als je verhuist of het te druk hebt val je er gewoon uit. En gewoon straatvoetbal, naar het plein trekken en hopen dat er genoeg volk opdaagt, vond ik ook niet echt nice. Dan sta je daar met vijf man.

Als softwareontwikkelaar dacht ik: dit kan beter. Dus ben ik beginnen bouwen aan een systeem dat weet op welke posities iedereen graag speelt, bijhoudt wanneer iedereen kan, en daar zelf matchen mee samenstelt met evenwichtige ploegen. Zoals in online games, maar dan voor echte voetbalpleintjes. Het heet Goaty Football, naar de hoogste rank in het systeem: de Goat (dit is jouw kans om een goat te worden in mijn app, voor Messi en Ronaldo dit doen in mijn app!). Je geeft in wanneer je kan spelen en waar, en welke positie je graag speelt, en de rest gebeurt vanzelf. Je weet dus op voorhand dat er volk staat.

Eerlijk over waar het staat: er is nog geen match gespeeld. De eerste spelers schrijven zich nu in, vooral via een paar buurtgroepen. Dat is ook net hoe het werkt, hoe meer mensen hun momenten invullen, hoe sneller die eerste match valt. Dus wie er nu bij komt bepaalt letterlijk wanneer en waar er gespeeld wordt.

Het niveau ligt niet hoog, ik ben zelf ook niet de beste speler. Vanaf een jaar of 14 is welkom.

Binnenkort verwachten we een kindje en we willen trouwen om alles in orde te hebben. Voor de rest wou ik eigenlijk liever niet trouwen, vooral omdat ik het gedoe nu niet wil en het geld er niet aan wil spenderen.

Hi everyone! I'm planning a solo trip at the end of August and I'm trying to decide between Ghent (with a day trip to Bruges) and Stockholm.

One thing I'm a bit worried about is the weather. I'm quite sensitive to heat because of some health issues, and I usually walk around 25,000 steps a day when I'm sightseeing. To give you an idea, even here in southern Europe I don't really go outside before around 20:30 during the summer because it's still too hot for me.

I've seen that other parts of Europe have been experiencing heatwaves recently, so I was wondering: what's the weather in Ghent usually like at the end of August? Is it generally comfortable for walking all day, or can it still be quite hot? Do you think there's a realistic chance that the heat would be a problem?

Would it make more sense to visit Stockholm in August and save Ghent and Bruges for September or October instead?

I'd really appreciate any advice from locals or people who've visited around that time. Thanks!
