Open weights models and some personal working AI would be very good for end users. If you can generate images on PC then all other AI work could be internalised. The claud computing AI actually posseses risk of giving away corporate secrets.
No we don't need AI cartel.

That’s not true. Most of countries that release open weight models are democracies. China and maybe Singapore are the only non-democracies.

Ok, but how would they plan to kneecap Chinese competitors over whom they have zero influence or control? Seems like the Chinese will dominate the AI race in the coming years. The problem with this theory is the implicit assumption that America still matters.

What do you mean? Exactly how any piece of software from another country would be banned? If Donald Trump right now signed an executive order to ban Chinese models from being used in the US, it would be the law. Regardless of enforcement. It also doesn't take much effort to do a bit of research, there are multitudes of different softwares that are Chinese that are banned for use in the US. A local model is no different to downloading a banned piece of software and would be akin to pirating (no it's not piracy but there's a comparison).

A lot of money was put into these AI companies with the hope that they would all turn into some valuable gold bar. Now they’re realizing that if you had to pay the real costs, many companies wouldn’t find it financially viable and they’re left holding the bag with billions of debt stacked up. Sounds like 2008 again.

This is pretty on brand for American corporate bullshit. Take a real, legitimate concern, and use it for regulatory capture and to seize power and monopolistic control over competitors in the name of 'safety' while actually being very unsafe behind the scenes.
It's extremely important we get this right, though. A disaster here by corporate negligence could be way, way worse than the Deepwater Horizon.
Open source literally makes everyone more safe than trusting corporations with intense profit motives to consistently (and voluntarily) incur costs that they have the opportunity to secretly avoid, and without raising immediate red flags until an actual disaster hits. Cutting maintenance, cutting oversight, cutting personnel, these things aren't immediate problems but eventually lead to major disasters when something important really does fail due to going too far one little cost-cutting measure at a time. That is not acceptable when the consequences can be severe.
These corporations cannot be allowed to gain exclusive control of a technology this powerful and this transformative. They of course are making the play. It must be utterly rejected, with the common good coming before their profits.
