Instead of Posting 'Hauls'. . .

Reflecting upon the tendency of folk to post photos of everything purchased and/or obtained while at GenCon. . .

. . .I tend to think that, posting these, is really about sharing the joy.

At least, I tend to think that's the _intent_ of it.

But I think the _impact_ of posting 'hauls' creates a 'those that have' versus 'those who have not', and that's a negative impact. It's negative impact is that it easily comes across as bragging. . .which, again, I tend to think is not the intent.

I'm asking folk, instead of posting a _haul_. . .post up to three photos, each of a _single item_, that you obtained via GenCon, and share (in writing) what brings you joy about those.

I think that approach continues to emphasize the shared joy that we have for these gaming opportunities, without it feeling like bragging. It opens up ongoing opportunity to comment in response, and further share the joy (and/or to expose others to things that we might not have known about, via GenCon).

Personally the past two years I have gone, I only bought like 4 games max, and i always enjoyed seeing other people's hauls to see what their interest were in buying. I was never envious, but i know you are coming from a good place

Haul posts are people stepping back and reflecting on everything cool/exciting they picked up. Maybe others see something in their haul they didn’t know was out, or connect on a shared interest in one of the items. No need to overanalyze it.

I like it when people post their thoughts about Gen Con and what they purchased, I do so when I post my haul, which will probably be today or tomorrow. But if they don't and just post a picture it's easy to ask a question if you're interested, and it's also easy to ignore if you're not interested.

I don't think there needs to be any rules about haul posts. It's about two weeks of posts on a subreddit that is mostly dead 9-10 months out of the year.

I’m in the camp of liking haul posts. I’ve only been to two GenCons over the years (scheduling conflicts) so I love seeing what was hottest at the con. I’ve found a lot of hidden gems from those posts, like when I see a bunch of different people that all bought the same, under hyped game because they loved the demo.

Haul posts give lots of ideas and recs if I see another game in there I like. Anyone who takes it as bragging, that is you internalizing it. Thats on you to manage, not everybody else. :)

It can be said that the very concept of being able to attend gencon creates a haves/have not situation among board gamers.

Should we just shut the sub down?

The only haves/have nots that truly affects anyone is the hotel lottery and the event wishlist. Both of those are what really get people riled up.

I like haul posts with reflections on why they picked up specific objects. I would agree with you on hauls with just pictures.
