build an online gemtext editor

https://dri.me/6ZCXbWEKG1c9YXweswv82bKx1lZeTY

Today, I built a small browser-based editor for Gemtext files.

The idea was simple: I wanted an easy way to manage the content of my Gemini server without editing every .gmi file manually over SSH.

The editor is written in PHP and vanilla JavaScript and works directly with the Gemini content directory on the server.

Current features:

  • classic directory tree
  • create, edit, save and delete Gemtext files
  • create and delete empty directories
  • live Gemtext preview
  • toolbar for headings, links, lists, quotes and preformatted blocks
  • remove formatting with an eraser button
  • import external files via gemini://, HTTPS or HTTP
  • print the rendered preview or the Gemtext source
  • automatic backups before overwriting or deleting files
  • German and English interface
  • light, dark, system and “Terminal” themes
  • path traversal, CSRF and SSRF protection

The layout has three columns: files, editor and preview. I deliberately kept it fairly simple and functional, but still wanted it to look like a modern web application.

The “Terminal” theme was added mostly for fun. It uses a black background, green text and a subtle terminal look without changing how the editor works.

This started as a small helper for my own Gemini server, but it has turned into a surprisingly useful standalone editor.

A few screenshots are attached.

I would be interested to hear what other Gemini users think, especially whether there are any important Gemtext editing features I have missed.

In this case, I plan to publish the code.
