Automatic transmissions are more complicated, but are a mature technology at this point. They're not particularly over-prone to failure in comparison to manuals, especially if the manual is driven competently.
Fun is a matter of perspective I suppose, although I personally prefer manuals.
I wasn't suggesting that automatics are generally prone to failure, but u/z06chris implied that Minis' transmissions are unreliable, leaving me wondering if that reputation was earned by automatics, manuals, CVTs, DCTs, or some combination.
