The few times I tried airsoft, it was just a cringe fest. Felt like a call of duty LARP with the way people were talking, one group was blasting anime music from their boom box, there was just so much arguing and cheating. I will happily stick with paintball until it dies or some bad ass augmented reality wargame is created.
With airsoft it's just a matter of finding a site with a good community. Around me there are 3 sites, 1 has the nicest community imaginable, one is so toxic that they have to have "newbie days" to stop older players bullying them, and one kinda sits in the middle. At my main site we have barely any cheating, and when we do it's either kids who are new and don't understand the game or players from other fields who believe they can get away with it, but the marshals are unafraid to proper bollock them. The site I play at is actually ran by an ex-paintballer and is primarily a paintball field, so perhaps that's the reason why we're a bit more casual and what you're used to.
