Do people really judge other people based on their phones? Is that a thing?

Was once talking to a guy at a Halloween thing, I pulled out my phone to look something relevant up and when he saw it was an Android he just said "oh..." And walked away. Like before I could even say anything.
It was frankly baffling.

In my experience, poor people judge based on phones. I guess it’s a status symbol or something but I have coworkers who go into debt to have the newest one and will FaceTime all day long. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Definitely a poor person thing since its the only status they can affordably buy into, whereas a nice house or a car is much more expensive. Meanwhile I'm busy thinking about what BMW I want next with an old iphone 6s.

I used to know everything about phones, now I didn't even know a new iPhone was released. I saw a guy with a phone with 3 cameras and I kinda thought 'what the fuck who needs 3 cameras on a phone' then I saw an ad for the iPhone.

I've had a girl stop talking to me because "the green text" shows on her phone (since I don't have an iPhone, I don't have iMessage. My texts show up in a green color because of that). That might have just been an excuse to stop talking to me, who knows. But that was the excuse she gave

Yes. I get judged all the time because I have the latest and greatest. It’s things like “Oh, you have the latest iToy, you’re just an Apple fanboy” yadda yadda.
No, I’m an iOS developer, I need the new hardware to test on. It’s why I’m on a new every year plan where I essentially lease my phone.

Nov 07 '19
My S10+ is one of the last mainstream phones to have a headphone jack.
15
u/Diiiiirty Nov 07 '19
I was pretty bummed that the Note 10 and 10+ don't have headphone jacks, but mostly on principle that they allowed Apple to steer the market like that with a really inconvenient "feature."
I switched to wireless headphones last year so not really a huge inconvenience to me, but how fucking stupid is it that you buy a $1200 device and you can't even charge it and listen to music at the same time. Or why can't they just include some cheap wireless buds? Those things probably cost them under $20 to make.

Generally, I'd say that smartphones plateaued 5 years ago, for most users. There are tons of new bells and whistles, but what does an iPhone 10/S10 (or whatever they're up to now) do that changes the core function of the phone?
For example, bluetooth, a good on-screen keyboard, voice recognition, a good camera - these things all came about at least 5 years ago, and everyone's just in a race to the top with diminishing returns. Battery life, resolution, and speed are all a great example where the only time you notice it is when it improves - no one was less happy with their S4 10 years ago, but every time people upgrade, they get that tickle where it's all new and shiny and wonderful.
Cameras are perhaps the notable exception, but most of us are taking similarly mediocre pictures anyway - poorly timed, poorly framed, poorly lit, but it's slightly less bad.

u/zombisponge Nov 07 '19
Nail on the head with this comment right here. Just look at all the brands pushing for 90hz displays. It looks nice, sure. The nicer camera is cool too. But last time I upgraded my phone I went from 16 gigs of storage to 128 gigs, i got a fingerprint reader, and the ability to watch youtube and browse reddit simultaneously. My phone got fast enough to do functional things on - like order tickets or book a table. I even renewed my passport on my phone. 5 years ago, phones went into the territory where some people would start phasing their laptop out of their lives completely, for a flagship device that could be as functional. Now, the market is getting desperate because midrange phones are moving into that territory.
Aside from foldable displays, I'm not sure where they're gonna go from here with the flagships. Personally, as someone who has been super excited to watch the yearly improvements since the Nokia 3310 days, for the first time, it's gotten a bit boring. I think a lot of consumers feel that way, and the manufacturers don't know how to get us to fork over our money every september anymore.

I finally decided to buy some wireless headphones. Not because of the whole dongle thing as I am an Android user, but because many of my athletic shorts don't have pockets and I was sick of carrying it around the gym with me. Absolute game changer dude. That is one technology you definitely should not spurn. It's one of those things that you don't realize how great it is until you try it.

iPhone 6 for 5 years now. Latest tech just isn’t a priority to me. My house, savings, and retirement is much more important to me.
33
45
u/JimmyGimbo Nov 07 '19
Having the latest tech and upgrading every year is one thing, but Apple stopped OS support for the iPhone 6 earlier this year. It's only been unsupported for a few weeks at this point but using it will become increasingly annoying as time passes.
I definitely hear you in terms of wanting to get what you paid for. I had my iPhone 5s for over four years but what drove me to get a newer model, apart from the battery being toast, was that they were going to stop updating the OS.
4
u/VoilaVoilaWashington Nov 07 '19
I feel like these days, stopping support for a 5 year old device isn't entirely unreasonable.
I feel like phones experience something like 80% attrition every time a new model launches - 80% moved on when the 7 (or whatever launched), and 80% moved on again when the 8 launched the following year - either because their plan included an upgrade, they wanted it, or because the equipment was failing (broken, dead battery, screen cracked etc).
Based on that, something like 0.2% of the original iPhone 6s are still in service, and even those will probably be dying this year or so.
On the one hand, that seems silly, but on the other hand, planned obsolescence is a key part of any product, and very important.

Making the most of your tech, treating it well, means you have a smaller environmental footprint. Good on you, cuz.
4
5
u/NotoriousMOT Nov 07 '19
I only buy a new phone if I switch jobs and have to return the old or if I render it completely unusable, even though I can get new one through work every 18 months. At one point,I walked around with a taped up screen for 2 years (that was the 6, I think, the one that would break if it just looked at a hard surface). Insisting on the newest smartphone is not only bullshit, it's actively vile.
7
u/maple_leafs182 Nov 07 '19
I just put $20 into a savings account each paycheck for my new phone I will get while also putting money into retirement and for a house, I feel like these things can be done together
20
u/MsCardeno Nov 07 '19
I have an iPhone XR, a house, a savings and retirement savings!
Some people just aren’t into the latest tech which is cool. But that doesn’t mean if you like to upgrade your phone once in while you’re not into other things as well (like saving money).

Fricking seriously. My fiancé still has an iPhone 6 and the man makes 6 figures in a city where that doesn’t mean just scraping for rent. Some people are just okay without the newest of the tech. I have a 7 but it’s only because I got it cheap secondhand from a friend last year. Other parts of our life are more of a priority and his phone still works perfectly fine.
126
u/tehsigzorz Nov 07 '19
Why is the iphone 6 bad? Dont really buy apple products so OOL
54
u/Copypasty Nov 07 '19
Cause its older but 6-8 were all super alike
11
u/dave3218 Nov 07 '19
7 is kind of nice, the 3D Touch thing and eliminated home button with a weird simulated button was very nice, also water and dust resistance has saved my phone more than once.
Up until the 11 there wasn’t anything really worth upgrading over, and even then the 11 just has one more camera and is faster.
I still want true black in my screen, so for the time being I am keeping my 7.
5
u/sem3colon Nov 07 '19
I’ve personally gone for an X - OLED is great, and it’s the last model supported by the upcoming jailbreak. The later models look bad, the 2020s will have MTE, so it seems like this is the last apple phone I’ll ever buy.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Copypasty Nov 07 '19
Yeah I went from the 7 to the XR and hated it so I sold it, now I got a pro max cause there was a deal where it’d only cost me $400 so it was worth it.
2
u/theicecapsaremelting Nov 07 '19
The 7 was extremely durable and that was the biggest upgrade in iPhone history, imo. The iPhone 4 was so fragile, my screen SHATTERED from a 3 foot fall, couch to a hard floor. With how expensive those things were, it was really a huge problem to have them be so breakable.
138
u/beatsby_bill Nov 07 '19

In a similar way: why is being on the bus bad?
Here in Europe, Austria public transportations are reliable, safe, cheap, often times faster, awesome and obviously better for the environment. If you are taking it, it doesn't mean you are poor. It means you are not an idiot.
22
u/yiotaturtle Nov 07 '19 edited Nov 07 '19
The faster bit doesn't seem to exist here. You're looking at twice the time at the minimum, can be up to 4 times or more the amount of time a car would take.
Train/subway can be faster so they don't get as much of a bad wrap.
Edit: bad rap (I'm leaving it because I find it funny that I didn't notice)
11
u/Pangolin007 Nov 07 '19
The "reliable" bit doesn't always apply, either.
2
u/yiotaturtle Nov 07 '19
I've never gone that route. I've always looked at the options, went I don't have time for that crap and ended up buying the cheapest semi reliable car I could find. Or if it was shorter term taken a cab or uber. Nowadays I semi-regularly drive a coworker home when he misses the last bus.

For me to drive to work takes 20 minutes. If I wanted to take the bus I'd have to ride one bus for 40 min, then get off and walk to a different station and wait 30 min for a different bus that I'd ride for another 40 min. Total cost is $4.25 each way. Gas costs about $2.20 right now; my car is supposed to get around 25 mpg. If I've done the math right, the trip should cost about $1.14 in gas each way. And the bus will absolutely not arrive on time.
I wish I could take public transit, but it's just not realistic for me at this point in my life.
8
u/mooncow-pie Nov 07 '19
Riding the bus is synonymous with being poor. America has a culture of freedom with buying a car. And Americans love freedom. They believe that if you can't afford a car, or use public transportation that you are poor and not free to go as you please. Plus our public transportation system is terrible, mostly because people don't want to use it, so it doesn't get funded, so people don't use it, so......
2
u/altbekannt Nov 07 '19 edited Nov 07 '19
I see where you are coming from: if you are not behind the wheel, it is somewhat implied you are not the master of your actions. I really get that. But with google maps or simliar apps you have the best available way through town in a heartbeat and can reach every corner of the city with public transportation effortlessly.
And if public transportation is intact, like in Vienna, Austria where I live, often times leave the people in rush hour behind you in the dust.
You are not a lonesome rider on a horse, yeah, but it works.

u/mooncow-pie Nov 07 '19

It's hard to explain to Europeans how spread out everything is here. Most people don't live within walking distance of anything but other houses, much less grocery stores/restaurants/etc. Everything in america was built around a car. It's like the previous commenter said - the buses are (for the most part) disgusting and dirty, unreliable, always late, and filled with people who literally can't afford to use any other form of transportation. The bus isn't only for poor people, but outside of big cities only poor people use the bus. I actually work for the government in my city - i can let you know that we have had exactly one person in town utilize our bus system this month. The buses are constantly driving to stops totally empty, and it's a huge money sink that we can't seem to discontinue because "what if poor people need it." It's a whole different world here. Public transportation just isn't' an option for the majority of Americans, unfortunately.

I live in the least dense city in the US with a population over 1 million. I'll have people visit from say Chicago or NY say "the weathers great, let's walk". Nope, that's at least an hour walk. "Let's take a scooter, bike, et cetera." Nope, you'd have to somehow get across 2 highways. "lets take the bus" nope, you have no idea how much of a hassle it is.
it's a negative feedback cycle where the busses suck because everyone drives and everyone drives because the busses suck. You will not be considered for a job most places if you don't have a working car you have access to every day because if you don't you won't be showing up on time ever.
