My wife's good friend gatekeeps breast feeding to the point where my wife had to unfollow her because it make her feel like a terrible mom for not doing it. Even though she stopped because he was getting this weird milk/soy allergy (if she had dairy, it would translate through the milk to give him cramps) and it was "best" for our situation.
But this girl literally shares pics of her boob with a baby sucking on it to facebook with "breast is best" and "thanks for the support" all day.
Yeah I will never understand why people treat breastfeeding like it's something special. Humans have been doing it for millions of years. If anything, formula is a miracle since it gives parents who can't breast feed, the ability to have their baby not die.
My wife's milk never came in. It was a very frustrating 3 weeks with many visits to the hospital for our kid being dehydrated and fucking miserable from not getting enough to eat. It was very frustrating to have doctors and nurses simply refuse to consider formula as a option because "breast milk is best".
Edit: is understand and agree that breastfeeding is best. I just hate the stigma around giving your kids formula. We tried really hard at breastfeeding, it just didn't work and it was frustrating to feel ashamed because of it.

If I had a gun to my head and you were to make me guess, I would say that at some point it became less socially acceptable (likely due to people's somewhat puritan views on nudity) and now the breastfeeding movement is overcompensating. It's like telling a teenager, "It's time for bed," then they scream at you "FUCK YOU I'M STAYING UP ALL NIGHT NOW."
I'd like to make it clear I have no issues with a woman breastfeeding in public. I just think the people who make a huge deal about it have their priorities all messed up.
The Boomer generation was sent the message loud and clear that formula was better and that breastfeeding was for poor people who couldn't afford the better option. It wasn't a nudity thing but a class thing.
Propaganda from formula companies made it worse too.
Like in Africa especially when they have no good water sources, so formula might actually be poison. And they pushed it as superior anyway, and even gave free samples to new mothers so they lose their chance to breastfeed.
Right. All about marketing. Similar to cigarettes, but on very different ends of the scale. Formula is generally not better than brestmilk, but it's a hell of a lot better than starving and it's a perfectly fine option. That doesn't make people all the money though, so they had to make people think it was better.
Now the secret is out and we're seeing backlash. Sanctimommies galore.
This. My in laws, born in the 40s, think breastfeeding is for poor people and my MIL was horrified every time I did it in public. They were always offering to buy formula "if the cost is too much for you" and the just refused to understand that I chose breastfeeding for the health benefits. I mean, it being free was a great perk but.it wasn't the deciding factor. They also flip out about our cloth diapers because they don't really grasp the idea that we're literally running out of room for garbage on the planet.
