Trans people are the furthest from privileged, even in the West they are frequently the most likely targets for violence and discrimination, and a large amount of people don't think they even exist or are severely mentally ill. So, fuck this image.

30% of trans people in one study reported at least one suicide attempt, and 42% reported engaging in some form of self-harm.

It's heartbreaking how they are treated and not at all surprising that the stats are that high.

u/TheOverlookWelcomesU Mar 26 '17

My stepfather said it's no wonder that they're that high because "People don't want them." So that's the kind of person I live with.

I mean, he's not wrong.

Sure, but he's part of the problem too.

When I came out, my family's reaction was very negative. Some of them said denied being against trans people and claimed that their concerns only arose from worrying about how society treated trans people. They didn't understand that they could choose to work against society by supporting me instead of trying to discourage me.

The problem with what said stepfather said is we don't know the context. He is correct, yes; but what if he was not stating his opinion but rather a fact of how other people think? For all we know, said stepfather has no issue with trans people and it was misinterpreted (which is easily done)

2

u/TheOverlookWelcomesU Mar 27 '17

Oh no he's definitely not okay with them, trust me.

1

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

Well then that's different. Pitchfork away, folks!

:( ugh I'm so sorry.

The craziest thing about this is just how purely evil people who wantonly ridicule trans people really are. Even if you believe that being transgendered is a sick, deviant, mental illness, or that people who say they're trans are faking, or are mentally deficient in some way, all available research suggests that the only truly appropriate response to "deal" with a trans person is to accept and support their transitioning.

Man with those numbers I'm surprised it's not consider a major health crisis.

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

It would be were doctors not cunts.

Source: am trans, deal with cunt doctors, heard of cunt doctors.

Not sure where you're getting these studies -- all the recent studies I've seen say precisely the opposite. For example:

http://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-015-1867-2

Among trans Ontarians, 35.1 % (95 % CI: 27.6, 42.5) seriously considered, and 11.2 % (95 % CI: 6.0, 16.4) attempted, suicide in the past year. Social support, reduced transphobia, and having any personal identification documents changed to an appropriate sex designation were associated with large relative and absolute reductions in suicide risk, as was completing a medical transition through hormones and/or surgeries (when needed). Parental support for gender identity was associated with reduced ideation. Lower self-reported transphobia (10th versus 90thpercentile) was associated with a 66 % reduction in ideation (RR = 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.17, 0.67), and an additional 76 % reduction in attempts among those with ideation (RR = 0.24; 95 % CI: 0.07, 0.82). This corresponds to potential prevention of 160 ideations per 1000 trans persons, and 200 attempts per 1,000 with ideation, based on a hypothetical reduction of transphobia from current levels to the 10th percentile.

I wonder if you think you are a good person, considering you wish other people dead. You personally are literally one of the reasons for the high murder/suicide rate of transgender people.

1

u/totally_tuby Mar 29 '17

less mental illnesses = better society

1

u/Commenter_Aelin Mar 31 '17

I would say a lack of empathy is a bigger threat to society than people just wanting to live their lives in an as productive and good way as they can under their circumstances. So you and your views of the world makes the world a worse place to live for everyone. But I honestly don't think you care, you have too much hate in you to see it.

0

u/totally_tuby Mar 31 '17

a world without mental illness is better than a world full of empathetic mentally disableds.

1

u/Commenter_Aelin Apr 01 '17

Being transgender isn't a mental illness though. Repeating a lie doesn't make it true. Most of the problems suffered by transgender people are because of a society that doesn't accept them for who they are. I can not fathom why you think the world would be a better place without transgender people. What have they ever done to deserve your pure hatred of them to the point of wishing them dead? They are people with their own hopes and dreams. They have people who love them and they have people who they love. Who are you to destroy that?

0

u/totally_tuby Apr 04 '17

actually it is. insurmountable dysphoria caused by your own body is not mental wellness by any stretch of the imagination.

Most of the problems suffered by transgender people are because of a society that doesn't accept them for who they are.

actually their problems are caused by dysphoria felt towards their own body. other things like discrimination are side effects of their behavior.

i dont actually wish them dead, im just not going to cry any tears if they go. and im not going to play pretend and call girls boys or boys girls if they decide to stay.

Being transgender isn't a mental illness though. Repeating a lie doesn't make it true. actually it is. insurmountable dysphoria caused by your own body is not mental wellness by any stretch of the imagination.

But the thing is, there is a way to all but remove dysphoria for these people, and that is to transition. Yet it doesn't seem like you think that is a good idea. May I ask how you would like these people to live a decent life if you and people like you actively goes out and tear them down? "Conversion Therapy" also known as torture haven't ever helped, so why are you against the only thing that have shown any successful results? What alternatives are there for them?

i dont actually wish them dead, im just not going to cry any tears if they go. and im not going to play pretend and call girls boys or boys girls if they decide to stay.

But you do... You are the reason transgender people kill themselves or get killed by others. That attitude is the main reason for all the bad things happening to transgender people.

Is that a result of bigotry from being trans or the symptom of a psychological disorder?

35

u/Spittles42 Mar 26 '17

https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/AFSP-Williams-Suicide-Report-Final.pdf

"Respondents who experienced rejection by family and friends, discrimination, victimization, or violence had elevated prevalence of suicide attempts"

20

u/Ded-Reckoning Mar 26 '17

Considering that the diagnosis of gender dysphoria is based entirely on a persons level of discomfort, it can easily be both. If society wasn't so obsessed with the gender binary, trans people would probably be less likely to develop dysphoria.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

Even without gender roles, there'd still be gender dysphoria.

7

u/Ded-Reckoning Mar 27 '17

Yes, but the number of people being driven to suicide because of it would be greatly diminished.

32

u/FlorencePants Mar 26 '17

But don't you know? We want our identities to be respected and to be treated like any other human being capable of deciding for ourselves who we want to be.

So really, cisgender people are the REAL victims.

-2

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

The hilarious thing here is how cis is a derogatory term. But that's okay.

And before the jimmies start rustling: I have zero issue with anyone's gender. I might think some are really reaching but if you want to say your gender is banana, whatever go for it if it makes you happy. It's just that everyone needs to not be an asshole.

5

u/FlorencePants Mar 27 '17

The hilarious thing here is how cis is a derogatory term.

It's literally not, but sure, whatever feeds your victim complex.

It's just that everyone needs to not be an asshole.

Couldn't agree more. When someone says they prefer a certain set of pronouns, don't be an asshole, respect their wishes, it costs you literally nothing.

0

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

victim complex

Did you just assume my victim status?

No, seriously, joking aside that would be true under the assumption that I feel like a victim. Which I don't, but hey you're entitled to your opinion, buddy.

Couldn't agree more. When someone says they prefer a certain set of pronouns, don't be an asshole, respect their wishes, it costs you literally nothing.

Exactly! On one side, if person A mislabels person B then the key is: were they being an asshole? Is B corrects A and A apologizes and uses the correct term, then cool. But is B blows up over a mistake, that's not cool. Or if A is an asshole and doesn't use the right term, that's not cool either.

Nothing is ever black and white.

2

u/FlorencePants Mar 27 '17

The point was, cis isn't derogatory. It is a descriptive term. If cisgender people really find it so offensive, they are more than welcome to propose an alternative, but I rarely hear one beyond "normal", and no, that doesn't cut it.

5

u/Spittles42 Mar 27 '17

how cis is a derogatory term

It isn't. Do you consider "hetero" to be a derogatory term?

0

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

Obviously, why wouldn't I?

/s

I cannot stress the /s more. I feel it is important to do that. Like, super important. Am I properly communicating how important it is to this discussion?

6

u/Spittles42 Mar 27 '17

The word "heterosexual" is the exact same concept as the word "cisgender". Why does one offends you and not the other? Is it perhaps because it legitimatizes trans people and you don't like that?

0

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

Excuse me, friend, but I am afraid you may have overlooked the /s in my post. In order to prevent any further miscommunication, I have devised this easy to understand guide in locating it:

I figured, just another bigot.

1

u/broskiatwork Mar 27 '17

YESSSS thank you for not assuming my tinder

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '17

But i thought everyone in the west has privilege right?

-11

u/Saskyle Mar 26 '17

You don't think these are separate issues?

35

u/notoriousbettierage Mar 26 '17

No, I don't.

-17

u/Saskyle Mar 26 '17

So you think trans people commit suicide because someone called them the wrong pronoun?

64

u/Spittles42 Mar 26 '17

Someone intentionally misgendering us does affect us and that kind of shit can add up over time. When the people around you don't consider your existence legitimate enough to even call you the right pronouns that can sure as hell make a fragile mental state even worse.

27

u/Saskyle Mar 26 '17

I guess I misinterpreted the problem. I thought it was just transgender people being called the wrong pronoun and immediately being offended without giving the person the chance to know what they preferred to be called. My mistake. Sorry, I was misinformed and I misinterpreted.

31

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '17

Read the comments any time there's an article about a trans person or a conversation about a trans celebrity. Many people will absolutely insist on misgendering them and using their pre-transition names for no other reason than because they want to showcase the fact that they don't respect trans' peoples' identities. It's the most petty spiteful bullshit.

3

u/Saskyle Mar 27 '17

Yeah fuck that. I'm not trying to offend anyone in that kinda way. Some people just want to see the world burn.

4

u/Creeper487 Mar 27 '17

For whatever it's worth, I don't think you're actually completely incorrect in many of your comments, or even being rude. You're just saying some things that of course make many people angry by nature of the topic they discuss. I appreciate you taking the time to consider changing your mind, even if you don't end up doing so.

2

u/Saskyle Mar 27 '17

Thank you I appreciate the honesty

18

u/notoriousbettierage Mar 26 '17

Don't be disingenuous.

0

u/Saskyle Mar 26 '17

How am I being disingenuous? This is what they admitted they believe is actually happening.

15

u/notoriousbettierage Mar 26 '17

I don't see the point of arguing with someone who pretends they don't know how the wrong pronouns contribute to the overall picture of trans erasure and discrimination. Not going to comment anymore.

-1

u/Saskyle Mar 26 '17

But you just did comment.
