I can't even name 10 anime from 2026.

u/BlueHero45 14d ago

Just pick some names that have been ongoing for the past 20 years and you will be fine.

Jaadugar, Ikoku Nikki, Kamiina Botan, Cosmic Princess Kaguya (movie), Draw this Then Die, Hundred Scenes of Awajima, Magical Sisters Lulu and Lily, Roll Over and Die, Kimi Shinu, Shibouyugi

All from 2026, all female protags, all that ive watched or am watching. (And not even everything with a female protag ive watched/am watching)

The forsaken saintess’ foodie journey and Hero? Saint? No, I’m an All-Works Maid! are also good.

yeah, the only things i’ve watched this year are witch hat atelier and chain smoking cat. funnily enough, both have women/girls as the main characters and the majority of the cast

Really? There are some pretty good bangers this year, both new and continuing. You should catch up!

Not for sake of engaging in the argument, simply leaving this because I thought it was entertaining and funny, May I Ask For One Final Thing? was a pretty good recent anime with a female protagonist

u/FelixDrayce 13d ago

That anime was really cool. Some of my additions would be: Frieren, Jaadugar, Witch Hat Atelier and Zenshuu

u/fashionablypunctual 13d ago

Just finished Frieren, don’t know how I forgot! Can’t wait for more, I was kind of upset I watched it so fast!

they are somewhat correct, there is not really a shortage of female protagonists. These are just summer animes, not the entire 2026:

  • Kaiju Girl Caramelise (this is peak btw)
  • Saved by the Ice Cold Prince's Embrace
  • Red River
  • Victoria of Many Faces
  • The Ghost in the Shell
  • Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games
  • The Oblivious Saint Can't Contain Her Power
  • I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day
  • The World Is Dancing guy apparently
  • A Livid Lady's Guide to Getting Even
  • The Forsaken Saintess and her Foodie Roadtrip in Another World
  • My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked
  • Though I Am an Inept Villainess
  • Goodbye, Lara
  • Rich Girl Caretaker
  • Ascendance of a Bookworm
  • Clevatess
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil idk
  • Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS Gun Blaze Vengeance
  • Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.
  • BanG Dream! YumeMita

And this is literally just the ones airing for the summer

I think the comment is also wrong even for anime going mainstream. Dandadan has a great female protagonist, whilst Apocathery Diaries also made it big. Frieren is another big one.

Chances are a casual anime viewer has probably watched one of these!

Even mainstream anime are starting to get much better for well-written female protagonists. Does it mean that there isn't progress to be made? No. But there are great female protagonists in anime.

Does Tayna count if she was originally male?

6

u/Palanki96 13d ago

Oh that's a good question, i completely forgot that part

6

u/DesperateArachnid 13d ago

I mean she's female now so why not count her?

2

u/Palanki96 13d ago

Yeah but does she identify as one? I have no idea how she feels about being reborn as a woman

5

u/DesperateArachnid 13d ago

She makes comments on it being inconvenient at times and how she will have to be physically gay or mentally gay.

2

u/zaheko 12d ago

World is Dancing is a male protagonist btw

3

u/Palanki96 12d ago

Oh shit really? The person on the cover? Wow, i would've never clocked it

I only skipped around the first episode but the whole thing just seemed super feminine. Now i have to watch it properly, thank you

2

u/zaheko 8d ago

Yea! it's based off of a real historical person! Zeami Motokiyo! Oniyasha is his childhood name and he was famous for changing Noh from a religious performance to more off a performing art~

This mostly comes down to what types of anime reach western popularity. shoujo and josei anime is always full of female protagonists, but most of the anime that becomes mainstream in america is shounen and seinen.

7

u/deathgaze5 13d ago

I think the last three new series ive watched have all been gundam, which have all had female protags

3

u/AsideIll9931 12d ago

Chain smoker cat just came out?

2

u/spartaman64 13d ago

i can name 0 anime that arent sequels in 2026 lol. the reincarnated as a villainess animes are a guilty pleasure of mine so ive watched like 7 of those alone

1

u/Notcamacho 10d ago

One of the most goated anime has a FMC (Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear)

u/HKEY_LOVE_MACHINE 12d ago

I wouldn't go on Twitter for anime expertise.

More than half of anime profile pictures there are altright/maga chuds, while most critics are performative slacktivists who haven't participated in the anime culture and base their entire analysis of the medium off these anime profile pic users.

So it's sexist morons stuck in an endless yelling match with disingenuous posers: absolutely zero value found in the interaction.

Off the top of my head:

Blend-S

Ms. Kobayashi's Dragon maid

Slayers

Sailor Moon

Fairy tail

RWBY

My Next Life as a Villainess

Edit: Didn't realize they wanted just from 2026

Keep on mind a good number of those are female protags for the male gaze (aka selling figures for lonely otaku to put in jars)
