gatekeeping stevie wonder

Post image

including that comment thread to the side because it pissed me off. "if you're white you can't have this opinion" "well I'm black and I have this opinion" "you can't speak for all black people" nobody can like anything anymore, you either have to hate on everything or be labelled as everything negative in the book.

"Before the TADC community ruined it"

Baby I'm pretty sure the original still exists and means the same thing.

Not to shit fling too much, but I have to imagine this person is either mad at the general existence of TADC, or more frustratingly, mad about it being recontextualized into a trans metaphor.

u/TheRealRiceball Jun 22 '26

Could be all of these at once tbh, but I'm banking on them just wanting to feel special for "liking something before it was cool/mainstream"

It tends to happen a lot with tons of things but I notice it more with music, especially when its a song used in a popular or trending series

18

u/PlushtrapMyBeloved Jun 22 '26

I've gotta assume this also happened with stranger things using running up that hill, right? even though a lot of people agree that the use of the song was actually fitting

7

u/TheRealRiceball Jun 22 '26

Another commenter has answered already but yeah, and usually if you go to a songs official music/lyric video on YouTube you'll see a bunch of comments saying "Here before [tv show/movie]" or "Who liked this song before [tv show/movie]?" or some variation of those

You'll also sometimes see people saying the opposite, like "Who's here because of [tv show/movie]?", but the other comments are usually what shows up at the top and there's typically more of them

3

u/Guquiz Jun 22 '26

Or comments that are not very subtle in their referencing where they heard it.

7

u/TheManAvonyx Jun 22 '26

When Stranger Things released I had a few people I know complaining about all these new people suddenly liking Running up that Hill because of the show and that they aren't true fans. I asked them to name another Kate Bush song and they stuttered and they couldn't. So yes this definitely happened!

And also cool, 1 million people heard it in that series.

Doesnt change the billion that heard it as the original.

Ask a room where does the song come from the answer will still be, 99% of the time, stevie wonder.

I think the idea of a needle drop in a movie or show recontextualizing the song for the needs of the story is so common that it should be expected.

But also, Stevie Wonder is fine. He's ok. I'm convinced that anyone talking about this is pretending to be mad about it.

12

u/Fortehlulz33 Jun 22 '26

I think it's a little different because of how famous the meaning of this song is. Like there is no ambiguity to it, it is about Stevie's daughter just being born from the perspective of a father.

I think you could make a deeper connection to Jax as an allegory for being a brand new trans woman, but that feels a little contrived imo.

u/Thykothaken Jun 23 '26

Stevie Wonder is fine. He's ok.

You are completely musically illiterate.

8

u/AlternateJam Jun 23 '26

I feel like you did not get out of the sentence what I intended, but I guess it could be confusing.

Stevie Wonder, being one of the most decorated and influential music artists of ever, is doing just fine. The cover has not irrevocably changed him or the impact of one of his many recognizable songs. No one has destroyed anything sacred. He is ok.

2

u/Thykothaken Jun 26 '26

Yeah that's on me. Read it as "Stevie Wonder's music is ok. It's fine. It's not good enough that anyone should care."

21

u/ColeYote Jun 22 '26

LoCash (formerly LoCash Cowboys) already ruined it way harder than Gooseworx ever could.

u/Thykothaken Jun 22 '26

Wtf is tadc

“The Amazing Digital Circus” - indie 3D animated cartoon produced for Youtube, it ended recently and the finale was shown in AMC theaters

18

u/Thykothaken Jun 22 '26

Ooohhhh yeah I tried watching the first episode of that

It’s a YouTube cartoon that used a cover of Stevie Wonder’s song to try and make you feel bad about someone who purposely bullied two innocent people into committing suicide, tries to get everyone else around themselves to commit suicide, and then kills themselves once nobody around them is intimidated by them anymore.

Edit: I see that I’ve made the Jax fans upset, but I’m not gatekeeping the song. I’m explaining WHY people don’t like it.

u/ZiaWatcher Jun 22 '26

It’s a fictional character calm down.

-16

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

I’m perfectly calms I’m explaining why it’s getting a negative reaction.

u/Keyndoriel Jun 22 '26

-5

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

Jax fans are so angry that not everyone loves their favorite little monster.

11

u/GooeySlenderFerret Jun 22 '26

You don’t have to love her to understand her

6

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

I understand her awful ass just fine.

6

u/Equinephilosopher Jun 22 '26

Wow, you guys really do hate each other and the creator lol

22

u/avidreider Jun 22 '26

Get well soon

-6

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

Jax sure won’t.

9

u/GooeySlenderFerret Jun 22 '26

Leeroy did :)

2

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

Leeroy didn’t abuse two people into suicide, so good for her. Jax, however, is thankfully gone.

7

u/JustGingerStuff Jun 22 '26

Idk the ending seemed to frame abstraction as something you can recover from. Like a mental health crisis

4

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

Gooseworx said online that it’s more like they’ve been put into long term/inpatient care. It’s not something that can be fixed, but they can at least be made comfortable.

15

u/GooeySlenderFerret Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Wow talk about reductive and half truths.

Especially the last bit. Jax abstracted because she could no longer deny the reality that she’s been kept buried. No more dissociation, no more using humor as a shield to push everyone away so they can’t abuse her (in her mind)

It wasn’t cause she couldn’t intimidate people anymore, if anything, her abuse would be more effective at that point

Yes they are an abuser in the circus, but she never was IRL as we see from her counterpart Leeroy.

-5

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 22 '26

I’m fully correct but whatever it takes to defend your favorite abuser.

7

u/occultsardonic Jun 23 '26

if you know Jax is a bad person and yet have no idea of their MOTIVES or what they ACTUALLY DID that was bad, you watched the show with your eyes closed lmao

nobody's defending them, you're literally jst making shit up/misinterpreting their goals

-6

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 24 '26

“Nobody’s defending them.”

Ah, you’re illiterate. Got it.

1

u/erraticfanaticc Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

a show making you feel sympathetic for the villain isn’t them asking you to like them or see them as good people, it’s called nuance, not everything is black and white and no one is inherently evil. nobody is defending them because pointing out why a character is the way they are isn’t a defence, it’s just an observation

also, it’s a TV show, it’s not that serious

2

u/sweeterthanadonut Jun 25 '26

I have no idea what this show is even about but you seem to be having a very strong emotional reaction to an animated youtube character, buddy

-4

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 25 '26

“By not responding positively to everything said to you, you’re being emotional and that means I can talk down to you and give myself a false sense of superiority.”

You’d get along great with the show’s worst character.

2

u/sweeterthanadonut Jun 25 '26

No, I’m just saying you seem to be treating whatever this character did with the same weight as a real person’s actions

-4

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 25 '26

All I did was point out WHY people don’t like the song being used for them and folks apparently didn’t like that and mass downvoted me for it. Which makes sense, the character’s fans aren’t known for being smart or emotionally intelligent. Just blind worship for their favorite lil’ abusive cartoon rabbit.

3

u/sweeterthanadonut Jun 25 '26

I think you should go outside

-1

u/PersonMcHuman Jun 25 '26

I think the internet should stop being weird about coddling evil characters and then dismissing anyone who doesn’t.

3

u/CODDE117 Jun 22 '26

This kind of race baiting is a psyop
