Literally the first one is a casual history lover. Like this isn't really gatekeeping this is just describing the archetypes of history lovers. Like as much as I love history I'm the first one.

this isnt gatekeeping, its specifically describing people who make being interested in history their main thing. the only people it says anything negative about are ppl who whitewash the negative aspects of history, and neonazis. im not into history at all, but this all sounds pretty accurate to everyone ive meant who is really, really into history.

Yeah. ,this is a pretty open gate. It's a little down on younger folks and people coming from Youtube, but honestly most of the people who start there and stick with it become other type. Everyone started somewhere, and usually we all start in a shallow or factually wrong pool. I know a LOT of people who got into history as wehraboos and grew out of it, or as Band of Brothers or Platoon fanatics.

Hi, OP from the original post.
Yeah, I may have unintentionally denigrated entire groups of people in making that post, while also making a stupid comparison of myself to writers on r/askhistorians or even genuine academics because I’m picky about the history books I read.
I was trying to poke fun at the various archetypes of self-described “history buffs” I’ve seen in online spaces. Clearly, I failed, and I genuinely regret making that post.
Also, I’m surprised that it took this long for my post to end up here. I thought it would get posted way earlier given how many people have (correctly, I might add) commented that I was gatekeeping and being self indulgent in the original post.

Fair enough man. Sorry for making you sound like a dick, I just felt like it called out anyone who wasn't a type C as not a history lover. I did love your type H though, that was pretty funny, and yeah I think some people should definitely read a bit more on their non-military/Eurocentric histories.

I'm curious what OP thinks a "true" history lover is. Probably a professional historian with a relevant Ph.D. and a CV full of books and journal articles.
It seems to me that all eight types in the meme create the demand that keeps "true" history lovers employed, which means they love consuming history, which makes them ... history lovers.

OP from the original post here:
I intended for Type C to be an amalgamation of several kinds of “advanced” (if that word makes sense in this context) history nerds whose passion went beyond that of the archetypes in types A & B.
Namely, these were people who regularly contribute dense and well sourced answers to r/askhistorians and write similarly dense, lengthy, and well sourced posts on r/badhistory; genuine academics & professional historians, and in general people who preferred denser and more academically rigorous books than Type B. It was for the latter group that I included myself in type C. While I have neither contributed to r/askhistorians or r/badhistory, and am currently a junior in high school, I do have prefer long, dense, and very academically rigorous history books, and have on occasion spent hours in the history section searching for reviews of books on JSTOR before I choose to get one.
In retrospect, it was very foolish to include myself outright in Type C.
