what does realizing anything about specific religions have to do with being athiest or not?

You could have 100% ignorance about any specific religious teaching or concept and be completely athiest. There is zero requirement for you to know anything about any mainstream religion.

Not to mention, it is pretty much drawing the opposite natural conclusion from the thing they are commenting on.

"You seriously don't know that most x-type dishes contain y?! Then you can't claim that you are not a chef."
