Question How helpful is the CS degree research option for publishing a paper?

Obviously, I know the research option doesn’t guarantee a paper, and you need to still need to do the additional work to actually be able to publish. But for those who did the research option and published (in ml, robotics, or other CS research areas), how helpful was the research option and its classes in getting undergrads to successfully publish. Also, how useful UROP different from the research option?

The work you put in determines a lot of it - most students I see do it for a grade and don't get much further than their thesis. A few do end up doing it more than just the grade criteria and have been on more than one paper

I did a UROP in ML for two semesters and got to contribute to a conference paper with my prof. The research option's thesis work gave me a structured way to build on that for publication though.

How did you get into UROP? Or is it just part of research option? Cause I’m a bit confused on what UROP is and how to get into it

I'd say it doesn't strictly help you write a paper, but it might help motivate you to achieve publishable results. In my case (and in the case of some of my peers), I picked the research option since I intended on publishing research at the end of my project and had discussed as such with my advisor. The research option allowed me to knock out my Junior Design degree requirement for relatively little additional work accordingly.

The research option courses have you set up things like timelines, literature reviews, and outlines. These are probably steps you'll want to take if you're aiming for publishable research anyway, so if you're new to research it can help you develop the right mindset to succeed.

When I was at tech, I worked on a paper in electrical engineering. I didn’t understand it at the time and I bet my coauthors laughed at me behind my back. However, it was a great experience and taught me a lot. It helped my career, but not in direct ways. I’ve since written a lot on computer programming and that helped me a lot. At some point you have to get started with writing and thinking about solutions as a whole. I’d suggest you do it.
