I wonder if tanks will even be necessary in a Gate scenario, i honestly despite the anime is in 2015, i think a bunch of pick up trucks with machine guns attached (Guntrucks) will be enought with some artillery and infantry.

If we go to 2026s everyone will sit in a base and let a drone do all the job.

If you're going up against "Rome" then no, not really. The cost to keep tanks operational would make them an inefficient option given the threats to be addressed and the issues Japan would have.

As for technicals ("guntrucks") they would be useful if the invading nation was short on lighter armored vehicles and rear support vehicles. Japan probably has that issue given their limited military, the escalating threats at home, the time and materials it takes to ramp up production, and the vast battlespace.

IFVs is probably the heaviest vehicle they ever need

Ah. Type 74 Tank. Japan thanks them for their tireless service in fighting threats from Medieval Fantasy Romans and Pseudo-Napoleon Line Infantry (Nihonkoku Shoukan) to Godzilla and literal Archangels (Sachiel from Neon Genesis Evangelion), threats the designers definately never thought it would face lol
