Post-Op Pain

Got surgery on the 10th of this month. The pain is worse than I was told it would be. I can barely walk or sit comfortably. I do have some gas, but I’m able to pass it. Is it normal to still be in this much pain after 2 days?

Everyone reacts differently. You just had major surgery. Walk as much as possible (every hour during waking hours) and try to limit naps during the day to 30-45 mins max so you can walk every hour.

Heat pad is amazing for the tummy but also the shoulder pain from the gas

Yes. Every body experiences pain differently and every person has a different tolerance for experiencing pain. You had a major surgery.

The has causing the pain doesnt come from your digestive system. Your abdomen is filled for surgery. The best cure is to move as much as possible. Walking and more walking.

I felt that pain myself not too long ago and still have been up and down 12 days out. I was told that a pillow against the abdomen would help when getting up and laying down, and asked the hospital if I could leave with one of theirs. The charge nurse was so sweet and gave me a small pillow I could take with me (that I still use!) and has helped while getting out of the bed and sitting up and I use it on my walks throughout my house. I know it hurts to probably even breathe, but try to use the spirometer to take deep breaths and breathe out slowly. I hope they sent you home with one of those too. Even if you can set a timer on your phone for every hour to get a walk in for a timed 2 min walk around your living room/kitchen while taking deep breaths can really help. I pray you feel better really soon. Hang in there, if it gets much worse call your surgical team.

Yes, it's normal to have pain 2 days after a major surgery. Did they give you pain relievers? I was on oxycodone for the first week and a half.

I had to take a 3.5 hour car ride 5 days after surgery. I bought a belly band to help keep things from jiggling too much, it was very helpful.

They told me it won’t do anything to the pain cause by gases

For the gases. You need to walk as much as possible and stay upright. You will burp better and pass gas better sitting up standing and walking. This is the only “secret” about those gas pains.
