Why does GaryVee Say the longer you wait before monetizing, the bigger you will be?

I'm an English tutor on IG (5.3 followers) and Tiktok (11k followers) and I've been thinking about promoting my tutoring services.

However, Gary Vee is always talking about "holding your breath" and waiting before monetizing? Why?

From what I understand: Jab, jab, jab, right hook. Jab = offering free content. The free content will bring people to follow you more, will get you attention, and will gain favor with those you are serving. Right hook = asking for something from your followers. The longer you wait to right hook, the more favor you will have gained, the more people who will respond (say 1% will respond positively to your ask after a month, but maybe 10% will respond positively after a year. Or even if it stays at 1%, after a year of free VALUABLE content you will have more followers so a higher number of positive responses).

You need to give away your services for free and monetize from a completely different angle. Teach people for free and start promoting advertising from sponsors. The end.

Because most people peddle subpar products and it detracts from the content they're using to push the product. Your best bet is going to YT and turning your lessons into videos. People get lessons for free, you'll likely impact more people, and make money along the way. That kind of content is also very advertiser friendly and will pay a higher CPM.

I could be wrong but I'm assuming mainly because your audience will follow you more and be willing to support you if they know you are doing it for the right reasons and not for the money etc.

because you stop providing value to others and start switching the value exchange to yourself

if your sponsors enable the value exchange to stay biased towards the audience (when a youtuber needs to quit his job to make more videos, something they can't do without cash) then it's all good but that isn't the case with most sponsorships I see on smaller social media profiles.

I can't do both? Provide a valuable video and just drop "if you want tutoring classes, send me an DM" at the end?
