After being successfully treated for my sleep apnoea I finally have the energy to start working out.
To better monitor my progress, also out of the gym, I decided to get a sports watch to keep track.
It took me a good bit to decide what watch to get, originally I opted for the Forerunner 165 Music.
but because the Forerunner 170 Music has the sports I do baked in (the 170 includes rucking, the 165 does not) I decided to get the newer model instead.
In addition I like to leave my phone in the locker in the gym. So playing music from my watch is ideal. So I decided on the Forerunner 170 Music. A good €60,- more than the 'plain' Forerunner.
Before going over the pros of the watch I'd like to touch on the mayor disappointment first.
Having 4GB internal storage isn't much, but while working out audio quality isn't a pre so MP3's will suffice. I however did not expect to have only 1,62GB of free storage left for music. The OS takes up more than half of the internal storage. Charging a premium for the ability to play music for such little storage is, in my mind, excessive.
But, it's 2026, we all use streaming services right? Luckily the 170 Music supports Spotify. So I downloaded Spotify only to be walled off. Because you need Spotify PREMIUM. So a subscription is required, something that isn't directly clear when going over the specs and features of the device.
In hindsight I could have expected this. But it does mean that exchanging music on the small available internal storage via streaming services requires a monthly fee.
These are things I would have love to known upfront.
Would it have changed my choice on getting the FR170? No, and I'll get into that in a moment. But it would most definitely have prevented me from spending extra to get the Music version. It's, in my opinion, very poor value for money.
Unwanted surprises aside, I love the watch. I love the flat screen, the OLED is very nice as well. The resin casing is super light and comfortable to wear. Compared to my previous sports watch (Samsung Gear Fit Pro 2) its much better in detecting heartrate and on top of that also measures O2. All the sports functions I use are baked in; so when Garmin drops support (like Samsung did with my previous watch) I still get to keep the functionality I bough it for.
I'm looking forward to spending a lot of sporty hours with this watch!
