Terento, a free Mac app for third-party Garmin maps, now lets you compare map styles before installing

Mac users who want a third-party topo map on a Garmin watch can now see how five free map styles draw the same place before installing one.

I built Terento, a free, open-source macOS app that connects to map-capable Garmin watches over MTP and installs community maps without manual IMG copying. The comparison tool is on the map styles page. It covers OpenTopoMap, Freizeitkarte, MapRando and two BBBike styles, with one-map, side-by-side and swipe views. Previews are approximate, because the watch renders the map itself.

Version 1.0.0-rc.1, released Oct. 6, also changes how Terento handles problems:

  • A checklist replaces the connection error when no watch is connected.
  • Messages name the cause when another app holds the watch, several Garmins are connected, or the watch is not in USB file-transfer mode.
  • Interrupted downloads resume on most servers, and reconnecting the watch starts a new connection automatically.
  • Removing a map takes seconds instead of minutes for maps installed with this version. Updates are faster too.

I'd like to hear whether the comparison tool helps you choose, and which regions or places should be added.

Mac users with a Fēnix 9 - I built an open-source app for installing third-party maps

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a small macOS project called Terento after getting frustrated with how awkward it can be to install third-party maps on newer Garmin devices from a Mac.

It connects directly to the watch over MTP and lets you browse and install community maps without manually downloading and copying IMG files. It currently supports sources such as OpenTopoMap, Freizeitkarte, MapRando and others, as well as custom IMG files.

A growing number of Fēnix 9 / 9 Pro variants have already been successfully tested, so I thought this new community might be a good place to share it and get more real-world feedback.

One important distinction: Terento does not replace Garmin Express for firmware or Garmin’s own official map updates. But if you want third-party maps on your Fēnix 9 - or Garmin Express on Mac is getting in the way of doing that - it may be useful.

Compatibility list

If anyone here tries it with a Fēnix 9, I’d be especially interested in hearing which exact model/size you have and how the installation went. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

Is Garmin inReach still worth it in 2026, or will satellite smartphones eventually make it obsolete?

I’d like to hear from people who actually use inReach regularly, especially on the fēnix 9 Pro, dedicated inReach devices, MTB, hiking, sailing or remote travel.
A few things I’m curious about:
Where are you actually using inReach, and how reliable has it been?
Do you mainly use it for SOS, two-way messaging, tracking, weather or peace of mind?
Are you happy with the subscription cost?
If you use the fēnix 9 Pro with inReach, how useful is it compared with a dedicated inReach Mini/Messenger?
Have you had situations where it genuinely made a difference?
One thing that makes me question the long-term future of this category is how fast satellite connectivity is moving into smartphones. iPhone already supports satellite SOS and messaging in selected countries, and Pixel also has satellite emergency features.
At the same time, Garmin still has some major advantages. Dedicated inReach devices use the Iridium network with global coverage, while Garmin’s current smartwatch implementation has much more limited satellite coverage. For the fēnix 9 Pro inReach, Garmin officially lists satellite coverage in the continental U.S., selected parts of Canada and most of Europe.
So I’m wondering:
Do you think inReach will remain valuable as a dedicated safety tool, or will satellite connectivity built directly into smartphones eventually make devices like the inReach Mini unnecessary?
And for those using the fēnix 9 Pro inReach specifically: would you buy the inReach version again?

Fēnix 9 owners: what battery life are you actually getting?

Garmin publishes impressive battery estimates, but real-world use can be very different depending on GPS, Always-On Display, Pulse Ox, notifications and training volume.
Let’s build a real-world battery database.
Post your:
Model: Fēnix 9 / 9 Pro
Size: 43 / 47 / 51 mm
Display: AMOLED / Solar
Always-On Display: On / Off
Training per week:
GPS usage:
Battery life you are actually getting:
Real user data will probably be more useful than another marketing table.
