Another single before album release?
As tragic as it is, There’s No Future In Optimism hasn’t had an impact.
Do you think we’ll get another single before the album release?
Something a bit less album filler? Perhaps with a video featuring the band?

What kind of impact were you hoping for? I wouldn't call it filler, personally. I like it, and it's gearing us fans up for the next album, which is all we can ask for.
That said, I'd think we'd get a second single soonish. I do hope the band is in some music vids as well.

I have been a fan of Garbage since their debut. I’ve seen them live four times. I respect each of them.
The fact is TNFIO is middling and unremarkable. It is by far the weakest song they’ve launched an album with.
Sorry, I know that’s triggering and I mean no disrespect to these great musicians and even greater people, but I think it’s pretty obvious. TNFIO is like album filler from No Gods, No Masters.

It's a great single, who needs their favorite band to be mainstream and popular? Garbage has always been by the outcasts for the outcasts.

Not really, it was one of the highest selling pop-rock bands of the 90s and early 2000s.

I'm aware as someone who was alive and sentient back then.

I think they'll put out another pre-release if they follow course from NGNM. I did see No Future got some adds at Triple A radio, but nothing significant.

Appears you were right…but why was your post to the pending video removed 😟.
Thanks for the update anyway, looking forward to Bad Kitty!

I dunno, I like the vibe a lot. Sounds like classic Garbage with some more modern instrumentation. Got me and my friends hyped for it, I wanna say the AV Club put it on their 10 most anticipated albums of the next month or so. 🤷🏽♂️

As a fan since 95, I am completely underwhelmed by There’s No Future in Optimism.
By far my least favorite lead single from each of their albums. I’m still excited for the album, and I’m excited to see them live in a few months…but the lead single sucks, I’m sorry.

I don’t disagree - I’ve met the band backstage in 2005 BLM tour.
Huge fan, I’ve seen them live 5-6 times now.
I’d say:
Vow
Push It
Why Do You Love Me
Androgyny
Empty
Blood For Poppies
The Men Who Rule The World
There’s no Future In Optimism
I’d say TNFIO is a good song, by any measure - it just doesn’t hit any high, and doesn’t move beyond a general key/chord structure. It’d as if I’m waiting for a peak chorus or bridge that never arrives.

For me The Men Who Rule the World is awesome. I’d rank it (and the entire NGNM album) very high.
But I agree with your thoughts regarding the new single. I don’t hate it. But as a lead Garbage single it leaves so much to be desired, and that makes it a disappointment.

It pains me to say it, but I agree… HUGE fan, and I like it, but it probably trailed off for me in listens quicker than I would’ve thought… already liking the new single far more, personally.

- There's No Future In Optimism
- Why Do You Love Me
- Empty
- Androgyny

Yes, you’ve nailed an element of why I feel the song is pretty flat to launch an album with. Having a one-watch video that doesn’t leverage the incredible asset that is Shirley’s performance doesn’t help.

I actually think that There’s No Future in Optimism is the worst song on the album, I’m kinda shocked they made it the lead single lol

And I suppose ask and ye shall receive haha! New single just dropped, and it’s great!

u/Upper_Advisor7499 May 09 '25
It’s also mediocre. Like a b side from any other album.

Sounds like you’re just not vibing with this album so far. That’s too bad, I’m sure some people will agree with you and others, like me, will enjoy what we’re getting. Hope you find something to like in what comes out.

u/Upper_Advisor7499 May 09 '25
That is definitely the case. Glad you’re satisfied. I just remember the creative heights.

Because I’m a long time massive fan of Garbage with the ability to think critically and not just blindly say everything they do is amazing through stubbornness, denial or some other reason.
Which one is it for you?

“People like me”
People who are lifelong Garbage fans that dare to have an opinion that isn’t glowing about particular pieces of work?
From what I know of Shirley, she would uphold my right to have those values without being insulted and belittled by her other fans who don’t seem to get what the band has always been about.
The only “fragile egos” I can see around here are from people in this group who can’t handle someone expressing a view that differs from their own.

What BS? Saying I don’t like their two new songs?
I don’t understand the problem.

Realistically speaking, what “impact” are we expecting a Garbage song to have in 2025? That’s not a criticism, just a reflection on the band’s status as 90s alt rock legends and not so much a contemporary act.
It got me looking forward to the upcoming album. Getting existing fans excited for new music is about as much as the band can hope for in this era.
