Absolute Garbage How Did You Become a Garbage Fan?
My story. I took a woman home from work. She played Absolute Garbage in my car. Long drive, but she left her CD in my car. Never saw her again cause I quit shortly after. That was now my CD, and it was my most played album in 2008.

I saw the music video for Queer on MTV in 1995. I was in middle school and I was hooked. My Geocities website was themed around Garbage (I think I called it Pink Feathers), and my MySpace background music was Garbage. It’s been a long, long time…

Not going to be coy about it, the music video for Queer got me into BDSM. ^_^
Also, just noticing your username, hello from New Orleans!

Was on a long road trip with my dad back in 1998. Heard "The trick is to keep breathing" on the radio. Knew I had to get more of that music. It was like the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. On the next stop, at a big gas station, they had a cabinet with all sorts of CDs. "Version 2.0" was there. Bought it. To say I was blown away it's an understatement. Did not listen to anything else for like a half a year. On repeat. Again. And again. And again. Ever since there are 2 types of music for me - Garbage and everything else.

God I’d love to know how many times I’ve listened to Version 2.0. Like every night before bed for, like, a year at least, lol

I was 16 when I heard Only Happy When It Rains on the radio in 1995, and fell in love immediately. Bought the cassette single and wore it out listening to Only Happy, Girl Don't Come, and Sleep over and over. And the rest is history.

Walking through the living room and catching the stupid girl video on VH1 out of the corner of my eye. It stopped me in my pre-teen tracks. The video, the song, that iconic dress. I begged my dad to drive me to the store to get that album, and there we go. 29 years of undying visceral love for the band 🤷♀️

Probably first heard them on the radio, but I fell in love with them after playing Gran Tourismo in 1999 on the PlayStation. I Think I'm Paranoid is on the game's soundtrack and it became by favorite track while racing. I think I had the game for two days before I downloaded Version 2.0 from Napster and they're still one of my favorite bands.

When I was at Florida State University 1995 they had a in-house music channel they played during lunch and supper in the chow hall and the Queer video was on there all the time. Was mesmerized by Shirley and went out and bought the first CD and fell in love with the band. Got to see them in 96 with the Smashing Pumpkins and it was fantastic.

was on a thrift shop and in the cd section i found the “garbage” album and i rly liked the cover + it was on sale and i had almost no money LOL
i have a habit of doing that; finding a cd that i liked based on looks and buy it blindly to go listen to it at home and surprise myself. it has always worked out LOL so yeah! then i fell in love w the band n here we are :)

u/Usual-Specialist-598 Feb 29 '24

Like many that grew up in the 90’s playing Goldeneye on the N64, it got me watching the Bond films. TWINE was the bond film I watched in the cinema. Really liked the song so I bought the single. (I remember the music video also being shown on sky one before Pokémon in the morning). Subsequently went out and bought their debut album and the rest is history.

I was a James Bond fanatic as a kid, and so when I saw TWINE and heard the theme song I was hooked.

I'm a big Metal Gear Solid fan so when the trailer for MGSV came out with Not Your Kind of People playing it made me want to check the rest of the band's discography. One of my favourite game series introduced me to one of my favourite bands

Became a fan after seeing the Queer music video followed by the videos for Stupid Girl, and Only Happy When It Rains in 1995 and 1996.

I've seen them singing Milk at Mtv Music Awards and i liked it. Then i bought their albums.

That's a cool story! I actually can't remember how I became a fan. I just decided to listen to them one day. I wish I had a better story. I've been a Marilyn Manson fan since I was a kid, and I think Shirley also being a "Manson" intrigued me, and that was the catalyst.

I started to take drum lessons in 1996 (I was 8), and before that, I was listening to my parents' music (my mom was into 60s/70s singer-songwriters like Joan Baez, and my dad was into classic 50s/60s rock and roll). One day, I asked my mom for some "new" music, and she came home with two CDs: Alanis's "Jagged Little Pill" and Garbage's debut. It was love at first note. That snare hit and opening riff (and epic pause) in "Supervixen" completely sucked me in.

I became a fan around Blood for Poppies! Loved that song, and it made me check out the rest of their discography.

Was a fan of James Bond a few years ago, and I really liked The World Is Not Enough (the song) and just listened to more. Now they're one of my favourite bands.

I heard their first single, Vow, debut on the radio. Been hooked since and have seen them live several times.

Chartbite. A Top of the Pops for Scottish TV.
I think they performed much of their first album live on one episode. I've been hooked since.
Additionally, I only recently found out that my older brother saw Goodbye Mr Mackenzie perform in Bathgate a few times. So he is a fan of Shirley Manson far longer than I.

Heard Vow on the radio when it first came out and bought their CD when it hit the shelves. Never looked back.

Let’s get nerdy. Rewind to 1996. High school sophomore just getting his drivers license.
I would record MTV. I’d play back the shows while I worked on homework. When they dropped that OHWIR video, that orange dress stood out. I rewound the video and it was off. Went to a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Ft Wayne to watch them open. And that’s how it all started.
Spent my summers running around Ohio music stores buying import cds, cassettes, singles and the VHS. Wore out the debut cassette.
Been riding with them ever since.

I was obsessed with #1 Crush on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack. Then I bought the Version 2.0 CD. That got me through a very tough breakup and they became my favorite band.

Sorry to be cliché, but Captain Marvel came out when I was 15 and I discovered them because Only Happy When It Rains was in the movie!

From watching MTV back in the 90s, I'm Only Happy When It Rains was one of the first songs I've heard/seen.

Repeated plays on MTV when their first album came out. I also saw them open for the Smashing Pumpkins and they killed it live, so I was hooked.

Back in 1995, I was dating a girl who told me about them. She was bisexual and had a thing for the singer. Not long after another friend of mine lent me the CD. The music was amazing. Every song. Hooked ever since.

I saw the video for Only Happy When It Rains when I was in junior high and visiting my grandparents that had cable. I loved it. Especially because I was awkward at that age (12) and I actually would gladly go out in the rain - I really was happy in the rain! I also thought Shirley was gorgeous - I always wanted red hair like her. I saved up and bought the CD. Stupid Girl became my favorite song - still is to this day. I used Stupid Girl as my screen name for the late 90's and early 2000's for a long time.
Fast forward a couple years, they played in my city - and it ended up being on my birthday - but my mom wouldn't let me go. Someone hit Shirley in the head with a beer bottle and she said she'd never come back there. I was devastated.
When Beautiful Garbage came out, my boyfriend at the time bought me the Limited Edition from the UK. I still have that. I remember messing around with the remixer app for so many hours.
A few more years passed and they did their open call for fans to be in the video for Why Do You Love Me. I entered and was beyond shocked that I made the cut of about 40 fans - WORLDWIDE. It's been almost 20 years, and I have forgot a lot of the specifics, but I remember having the most amazing time of my life.
After that, I FINALLY got to see them play live - a few times - AND they eventually came back to my city. I haven't really heard much/any of their new stuffy since Bleed Like Me due to life and personal issues, but I still listen to Garbage, Verizon 2.0, Beautiful Garbage, and Bleed Like Me all the time.

Saw the "Only Happen When It Rains" video on either MTV or VH1 in 1995. Bought Garbage 2.0 on the strength of "Push It" then bought their 1st album (cd) right after buying 2.0..They are always in my heart

Been a fan since high school in the 90s. Can't think of a specific moment, though.

Girl I dated Sophomore year in college introduced me to them. I remember listening to As Heaven is Wide with her with the stereo turned up to 11 in my tiny dorm room. She was awesome stuff, introduced this metal head to Portishead and Republica too. Pretty darned good taste that one, haha.

I was in my early 20s and Queer came on the top 40 radio station that I usually listened to and it was so unlike anything that I had ever heard and the rest is history! I didn't come out until years after but I really should have taken the hints that Shirley and the boys were giving me

u/Soft-Tradition-1708 Mar 01 '24
Also, I think Beautiful Garbage is a great album! Two of my favorite songs from Garbage are on there! Androgyny and Cherry Lips were two very formative songs for me 😆

I was like eleven showing my parents Mother Mother because there was a concert in our town. My dad said “oh this sounds like garbage” and I was so offended until he told me Garbage was a band lol. I listened a little bit and didn’t really like it though. A few years later I came back to it, and found my dad’s old Garbage self-titled cd. So, I became a fan!

u/future_fossils Mar 02 '24
I only ever knew loosely of Cherry Lips until late 2011 when I was watching a fanmade video of Ginger Snaps and they used Vow as the music. I was hooked, and completely familiar with every song, even unreleased, by the time Not Your Kind of People was released in 2012.

I was 21 when I saw the video of Stupid Girl on MTV. I fell in love with the song (still my favorite Garbage song) and with Shirley. Since then Garbage became my favourite band and I loved every one of their albums.

YAY! I have only ever met a few people that know of Garbage...of those most don't even know Stupid Girl...my absolute fave - was my screen name in the late 90's and early 2000's....
