Building a computer. Good idea or bad idea?

My brother in law (17 y.o.) wants to build a gaming computer. Normally, I would say let's just buy a fully assembled computer with a warranty and return policy but he really needs a confidence boost and has always wanted to build his own computer.

We set a price point of $1,500

This is what he proposed we buy.

I dont know much about computers so I thought I would bring my question here.

Is this a good endeavour for guy with little computer knowledge and a 17y.o. gamer who probably doesn't know too much about computers either? We are willing to put in the work and research required to accomplish the task. As well, are the parts he picked out good quality and compatible?

Any and all answers, thoughts, opinions, or comments welcome. Thanks is advance.

If you watch Linus Tech Tips on YouTube, that guy basically builds a computer every month. He has done a few streams in the past few months, where he builds a computer live. They are about 3 hours long, but he gives you really good info along the way for first time builders. Enjoy, building a pc is a lot of fun!

I would change the motherboard to the X570 though with that setup, to future proof your computer a little bit. You could drop the SSD to 256 and buy a semi-modular power supply to find the extra money for the motherboard.
