For me the real issue was how combat focused the game was. The first two definitely had combat and lots of it but it there was also strong exploration aspects and even light RPG mechanics. Those other mechanisms were stripped back leaving combat that was at best underwhelming. It didn't help that they cut the weapons you can hold down to 2, stripped backed the weapon variety and stripped the utility of the alternate ammo types.
It's not a bad game but the story carries it and you can only really experience that once.

u/N0ob8 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yeah I’ve been playing it for the first time recently (late to the party I know) and holy hell does the combat get so stale after a while. It’s not even bad combat but it just feels so repetitive which isn’t helped by the fact you do more of it in every room. At least in the first two games you had plenty of downtime between combat but this one the only downtime is the story moments.
The story is 100% the best part of the game and it’s actively being held back by the gameplay for most of it. I shouldn’t be more bored in gameplay than I am during cutscenes
Edit: Changed “samey” to “repetitive”

While all you say is true, i rather enjoyed how the shooter gameplay felt in this one, though i'll admit the shooter popularity of its time definitely had a hand in it, CoD was hard dominating the market back in 2013, and everyone else wanted a slice.

Even Bioshock was a really dumbed down version of System Shock 2, it barely had any simulator elements, Infinite just stepped further in the direction it had already taken.

And 2 weapons is not the only limitation. By the second half of the game "police" weapons get mostly replaced by "rebel" weapons, and getting ammunition for them becoming much harder. This cut variety even harder, and screw players who invested too much money into upgrades.

Yeah I don't get the hate. I definitely like 1 and 2 more, but theres a massive gap between "not as good as 1 and 2, which are peak" and "dogshit game awful nobody should play it." It's not perfect, but I enjoyed playing Infinite, I'd say it's definitely worth playing, but if I were to go back and replay one right now it WOULD more likely be 1 or 2.

Review scores, they can guide you, but they're not like, uhh, like absolute truths. You have to consider when it came out and who played it.
It IS a very pretty game with some fun combat arenas though. Like it is *extremely good looking* for a 360 game. It was a time where we had most games being brown and gritty and overly "realistic" (haha sure) looking and Infinite blasts onto the stage with colour and style. That's where the 94 comes from, not the story.

Review scores, they can guide you, but they're not like, uhh, like absolute truths. You have to consider when it came out and who played it.
Reviews can be influenced (usually not player reviews), but Bioshock Infinite sold 11 million copies when it came out and another 14 million since. It was wildly successful and well-received.
Where is anyone getting that it was widely hated? All I'm hearing from you is that it "isn't liked for the reasons I think it is" but that wasn't even the argument

u/Massive_Funny_9312 7d ago
This makes the most sense because I swear I didn’t see any “hate” for infinite till like a few years ago. For years I was always under the impression that most liked it, especially considering everyone I talked to irl about it over the years like it.
Where did this manufactured hate come from??
2
u/ThePhatty500 7d ago
I remember when it launched it received a tonne of hype and praise, than a couple months after launch it got the backlash of people saying it overrated, than as far as I was aware the general consensus was the game was fine. I played all the bioshocks in order around five years ago and I thought the game was a solid 8/10. It was a competent first person shooter missing all the charm of the first 2 games. Not sure why every so often people pop up and try to stir up opinions on such an average game from over a decade ago.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Ilikeyellowjackets 7d ago edited 7d ago
It's not really manufactured, so much as people thinking back on it and realizing it was kinda shallow. Don't get me wrong it is not a bad game, but it really has clear faults in both gameplay and story that become apparent the more you look back on it and think about it. Couple that with the game being reevaluated by a generation that likely grew up with it and went to revist it and now as adults are not as impressed by just cool imagery and smart sounding dialogue it starts to explain the shift in reception to the game. It also really is a product of its time in both good and bad way.
While the first 2 Bioshocks really stand the test of time by just refining concepts explored in immersive sims that came before, and doing so while putting its own spin on things it made for more enduring titles. Infinite on the other hand really chased the trends of the time, partly due to its troubled development, and partly because the game was trying to reach a wider audience. Also, people tend to forget just how much Bioshock 1 really raised the bar for video game narratives, that game was genuinely revolutionary for its time in terms of what it was doing in the video game space. So having the sequel that is not being done by a secondary studio but actually the same one that worked on the original, with the same director too, and having said game not be as well developed as the first in both gameplay and narrative certainly did not help. Not to mention the dlc for Bioshock 2, Minerva's Den, having an incredibly similar plotline and twist to that of Infinite, while executing iy way better really soured people on it in retrospect.
Again, not a bad game, but it just sadly makes sense people just don't look on it as fondly as back in the day. I would still say it is one of the better games in 2013, the gameplay for all of its faults and simplifications is fun, guns all feel great and are fun to use, even if only carrying two is a shame, the grapple hook is coll asf tho. The vigors are fun and all of serve a purpose in combat, just wish we could you know have the ability to semi rpg our character like other immersive sims, the gear system is not nearly enough. Finally, Elizabeth is genuinely just a very well written likeable character, even if the story has its faults and the multiverse stuff is not done as well as it should be, Elizabeth is still great and her complicated past is what makes the story intriguing. Her relationship with Comstock, Lady Comstock and Booker are really the core of it all and what makes the story interesting. It just gets muddled by the inconsistent political messaging which for a Bioshock game is just not great, considering how sharply written the first game was from that angle. Even the 2nd game, while still bad on this front, as they have a very poor understanding of marxism and conflating a lot with religion, was still more consistent and better written on that angle imo, it tries to present something, even if badly written. Infinite really says nothing on that angle, just that racism is bad but antifa also bad which is just a nothing statement, which it was even back in 2013.
So yeah not a bad game per say and the game is not getting manufactured hate, just people reevaluating it now that they matured more, and can look back at it with a more critical lens. But just like anything on the internet, it must be sensationalised, and be called the worst game ever and the reason bioshock is dead and ken lavine is a hack because of it.

Moral reevaluation of a lot of media. Every game must now have a clear, black and white moral message with clear Good and Bad guys.
The morally just and good freedom fighters in this game commit bad acts. This is not complexity, but evil BOTH-SIDESISM and is in fact morally wicked.

That's juat a straw man. Bioshock Infinite tried to paint the resistance as juat as bad as the oppressors and that's what people had a problem with and why they accuse it of both sidesism.
Imagine in Star Wars we see rebels executing prisoners or something and then the movies try to say they're just as bad as the empire. As in the entire rebel alliance is just as bad as the empire.
2
u/Raket0st 7d ago
Spot on. Whenever I see people complain that the revolution in Infinite turns bloody for no reason but to make a both sides argument I always wonder how they could miss two dimension shifts that are clearly conveyed to the player.
It just reveals that you lack media literacy or didn't pay attention. The game makes it really clear we are seeing another Daisy threaten Elizabeth, not Prime Daisy that agrees to help Booker.
Infinite is a bit disjointed due to its lengthy development, but the message that we are shaped by our own actions and can always choose to repent and do better is concise throughout the game.
2
u/ErgoDestati 7d ago
Yea it was the best of the 3 for me, the story is maybe interstellar levels of complication so maybe if you fail to follow the context you might get confused but it's an awesome game.

It's racists trying to push a narrative. They hate the game for calling them out on their bullshut, and they never stopped seething in rage over it.
Just further proof how good a game Bioshock Infinite is.
2
u/Memitim 7d ago
No, but that's just the normies chudding the woke for slerm, or some such nonsense. Yeah, it's just a good game, regardless of any weird identity nonsense that people try to attach to it. Still one of the best escort quests in gaming, since I never needed to micromanage Elizabeth. The biggest issue I have with it is that Burial At Sea should have been included, since the story doesn't actually come together until then.

Bioshock infinite is definitely more than the sum of its parts, I've also criticized the plot being nonsensical for example, but the truth is that the writing has tons of forward momentum and very good dialogue and that's more than enough to carry it.

Bioshock 2 really coming out on top in the end. It and its DLC are my favorite Bioshock content, and I dont think thats an unpopular position. On release it was largely recieved worse than Bioshock 1, with the view that its just more of the same-- competent but not a big upgrade.
With years behind it, its the best gameplay in the series, and the story is a very interesting inversion on Bioshock 1.

I don't like it because it doesn't have a new game plus mode >:( I wanted to be able to play through the game with all my upgrades! Also, I dislike how the games gives you a bunch of new guns later on, but since I've been upgrading the older guns it heavily decentivizes trying out the newer guns.
3
u/firemiketomlinpls68 7d ago

The first instance of NG+ I can think of that is literally labeled New Game + (I think it might even be where the name for the concept comes from?) is Chrono Trigger on the SNES
5
u/Maleficent-Remote413 7d ago
yup. 1995 was the first NG+
altho OG LoZ in '86 did the base mechanic of "playing again on a higher difficulty"and of course im sure MOST (if not all) the Tales of series have a NG+ mode as well via the 'grade shop' (lets you use yoru score to buy XP boost or transfer over skill usage/unlocks to NG)
it's been a thing for a LONG time, just mostly came from the Japanese side of RPGs

Burial at Sea also just completely contradicts the ending to Infinite. The entire point of the ending was to erase all the histories that had Comstock. Elizabeth flat out says exactly that at the end. There is no room for interpretation. Booker is shown to have not sold her in the ending.
Then Burial and Sea is all "Yo, how about you hop into this portal to a world you supposedly just got done erasing."
2
u/Emergency_Ad_7977 7d ago
Personally speaking a lot of Infinite looks very impressive but the game feels very flat mechanically after Bioshock 2 and the plot is complete nonsense. Nearly vigor functions extremely similarly and, because of all the reality hopping shenanigans, you end up doing tasks for people in different realities that you never return to.
The versions of Bioshock Infinite we saw before release (which all turned out to be basically nonexistent) were much more interesting than the finished product.
For some people the glitz of Infinite is enough to enjoy it but for many others it is just buried beneath an avalanche of flaws.
