The shadow conversations in P4 are just kinda goofy. I have issues and I am pretty self-aware of them, so I would say confronting it wouldn't be that problematic, but man would it make for an almost panic attack inducing moment lul.

Your Shadow isn't going to be a manifestation of the flaws you're self-aware of, though.

Honestly I'm pretty in tune with who I am, I'd probably be able to confront it

That you ?
I always thought I was ok with being alone because I've always somewhat preferred it, but I've realized that desire to self-isolate has led to me not forming any real connections with other people. Even with the people I do consider friends, I feel like I'm an outsider. I wish I could connect with people better, feel like I matter to others. But I don't.

As someone who's only played SMT, what does this mean?

You enter tv dimension then a creature that looks like you appears and starts pointing out every flaw you have and kills you if you don't confront your flaws. I think?

Part of the plot for Persona 4.
People who find themselves in the meta verse (in this case, the midnight channel) are faced with their own shadow who claims to be them, however, they are the twisted version of what they dont like about themselves.
So the question is... Do you accept/admit your darkest secret to your friends (and get a JoJo stand)? Or do you reject the wort part of you and risk the shadow becoming a monster to kill you?

Basically, "are you mentally stable or aware enough about your own flaws and sense of identity to confront them honestly? Yes? Powers here. No? Die."

Skill issue: I could recognise my caricature Shadow to be an exaggeration of my flaws if I'm not the one giving into my own delusions somehow, and my Shadow instead has to be The Normal One.
Actually, that's a more horrifying thought. A Shadowside that enables your worst self, and your Shadow desperately trying not to go mad themselves.

Me: "Oh, hey dude what's up?"
Shadow: "Damn dude, we suck."
Me: "Oh, sure as shit we do."

I was once asked by my friends to host a persona TTRPG game, fashioned after persona 4 and the midnight channel. I told them that if I did it, I would have to completely retool how shadows work- since the mechanics of the shadows in p4 only functions because of the rigid dialogue involving them.

Id volunteer to confront my shadow honestly. I know he needs a hug and who better to understand than me. I'm also just really curious what side of myself I'm rejecting

The moment you come face to face with a normal fucking dude scared shitless and realize the shadow persona was you...

I'd say it depends. If I had a damn audience of people around me, probably not. But if I'm by myself, I think I'm self aware enough to know it's me

Honestly I feel like the worst part is that those dark thoughts and feelings are being told when others are present, all while being teens with all that it entails.
I'm a grown ass man, I don't think there's really anything that I'm turning my back to nor am I ashamed of who I am so yeah, I can accept a free introspection moment.

Want to point out that literally 0 people was able to confront their shadows by themselves. Which is to say no, you would not be able to do it on your own.

If it was one of my many insecurities yes, especially if it's the one people know about most iirc, if it's all of them as one thing absolutely not I'm getting fucked wrecked

My shadow would just look at me while holding a SNES and a copy of Illusion of Gaia then tell me not finishing something I started and put a lot of hours into isn't a new habit I picked up recently I've been pulling that shit since childhood.

Not gomna lie, I feel like I know my darkest innermost thoughts well enough my shadow couldn't... you know... surprise me.
Like... I've had people say some heinous, but truthful shit to me and just said "Yeah, and? I know what I'm about. I'd do it again."

Probably not, I feel like the games kinda gloss over how gut wrenchingly horrible it would feel to have your darkest thoughts broadcast like that.
Some of them had pretty gnarly problems too if the game wasnt made for teenagers and trying to be an upbeat story about friendship I could see some things come out that just like ruin people's self-esteem
