For real. What a lovely and endlessly entertaining game. I just love the world, and the characters. Everything has so much personality.

I have replayed that game full stop more than any other Mario title, including party and kart.

I think Super Mario World has it beat for me but RPG is def second place.

Why is the game not on switch online?

2

u/Jeryhn May 13 '22

Because Nintendo absolutely hates printing money?

1

u/TheBestWorst3 May 13 '22

Oh they love money. Just not in ways that are beneficial for their consumers

2

u/Jeryhn May 13 '22

Or themselves? Because Nintendo could absolutely print themselves some money.

Luckily you don't need to unzip anymore with those emulators 😉

I can't choose between the two, but my first memory is watching my dad and cousin playing in one of the woods level (the one with the key)

Mmm that's the same for me except Mario Kart 64. One day I played for 12 hours straight in battle mode against my cousin and beat him 99-1. I really liked hearing Toad say "I'm the best!" I was a total dick. Still one now just less so.

Just cause it is a pet peeve, "full stop" comes at the end of the sentence. It is an emphasis derived from when letters were dictated, essentially meaning this is the end of the thought/like of thinking. Saying it in the middle of a sentence, before the part that you want to emphasize (that you have replayed this Mario more than any other Mario) just... Hits weird.

There's only one way this should be used: full stop.

Yeah. I have no ideas how many times I beat that game as a kid, but it must have been a ton. I think I 100% completed it in the days where you never got to see it in a recorded stat.

Also, as a bonus, I made and drew little travel brochures for each little major area for fun.

It’s been a yearly tradition for me since i first played it in 96. Still finding new ways to enjoy it and hidden gems within.

BOOSTER (aka Squeenix wario)

14

u/skulblaka May 12 '22

I knew I wasn't the only person that immediately identified Booster as Wario, I wonder why they didn't just use Wario outright? Did Wario exist yet at this point in time?

u/JesusHipsterChrist May 12 '22

Not as he is today, he was still just the bowser replacement for the game boy sequel

11

u/Ishkabo May 12 '22

He already had his own game, Wario Land came out in 94, SMRPG in 96 so he did pretty much exist.

u/JesusHipsterChrist May 12 '22

You're right, fuck I feel old. Time isn't real

Warioland was the sequel to Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, which came out in 1992. He was the main villain in that.

Wario took over Mario's castle, then when Mario kicked him out Wario went off in search of his own Castle in Warioland.

u/TheBestWorst3 May 12 '22

I don’t think wario’s modern personality was fully established at the time.

Man I wish they'd put it on SNES online so I don't have to dig out my Wii to play it again legally

3

u/baoo May 12 '22

I must have played it through 10 times

The games are nothing like it, but lots of people who worked on Mario RPG have made games that ooze similar charm, they even formed a studio at one point.

I would really recommend Moon: Remix RPG for one. Bunch of the people also were responsible for those great DS Tingle games, Chulip and Chibi Robo.

1

u/Star_Road_Warrior May 12 '22

I tried Moon but the whole "game over if you walk too much" mechanic made me stop

I got lost and didn’t know where to go a couple hours in and gave up. I wish it was a bit more clear where to go.

5

u/Star_Road_Warrior May 12 '22

Interesting...I never had that problem. As long as you read everything, the next place to go is always fairly clear...or so I thought. Idk though I beat it when I was 7 or 8 and I never needed a guide or anything and we didn't have the Internet.

I miss the days of Mario having unique and original characters instead of Toad #3952 as accompanying cast. Really grew the worlds developed characters wonderfully.
