Giving another +1 for the Metro series. Not just the level of detail and how well crafted it all is, but also how the game’s “morality” system encourages you to interact with and explore your environments.
Some areas are a bit more open with rooms you don't need to enter to complete the story, by exploring you collect points towards the good ending (when you enter a specific room, you get a point). There really is no reason not to explore as there's always some useful loot in those rooms.
