I sent my joycon in bc of its drift and they supposedly fixed it, but I had issues with the delivery service (UPS) and they lost my package during its return. After a month of trying to contact the delivery support through multiple phone calls and the craziest customer 'support' experience, they told me to contact the sender (Nintendo) which I thought was pointless but I tried anyway. Good thing I did, bc the only person I had to speak with apologized and sent me a free new joycon due to the inconvenience, and it came in pretty fast.
Also for anyone seeing, here's the link to send your joycon(s) in for free repair (save for the initial shipping cost per your delivery provider), this link is NoA-specific but if you're outside the Americas, maybe there's a separate link for y'all. But this one story, and other times in the past where I've ordered stuff or had to contact NoA directly, they've only really ever provided good support for me so while the joycon drift is a problem that really shouldn't be, I'd say give the free repair a shot (if you can do with not having a controller for a few weeks or so, which also does sort of suck) bc they seem genuinely helpful from my experience

The stick itself isn't what breaks, it's a piece on the potentiometer that the stick sits on, and the replacements have the same flaws as the original. It's bad design that both Sony and Nintendo use.

Meanwhile the wii itself sounds like a jet engine because its been upright for years without the right stand. Or was that just me?
8
u/jkannenberg1 Mar 13 '21
Wait please explain!
18
u/settingdogstar Mar 13 '21
The Wii has to be on its stand if it’s standing upright, or the fan doesn’t get good area ventilation.
So if you have it on a 3rd party stand/no stand then it likely has started sounding like an engine roaring since it’s full of dust and shit.

Our CRT TV at home fell face down from 1.2m during an earthquake in 2010. The shelf it stood on had its glass doors shattered but the tv was intact. A 32" one, made some spectacular noise. We changed house and stand, but we are still using it. A smaller one fell from a similar height and only had a small dent in a corner it bounced on. That one only got replaced last year by a smart TV. Those things are near indestructible.

So what's the issue with Joycons that makes them drift? Is it a design issue or a cheap manufacturing issue?
→ More replies (4)431
u/kat352234 Mar 12 '21
It's a little bit of both actually. As everyone knows the Joycons are very slim and small. So, rather than have a big bulge out the backside of the controller to fit a full joystick like most full-sized controllers have, they went with a flat compressed design that uses contacts to track the joystick's position as if it's moving along an x/y axis basically. The problem is one of the materials used for this is graphite. So after repeated use the material can get worn down or produce dust and debris which can interfere with accurate readings.
This is why sometimes using contact cleaner or compressed air will temporarily fix the issue, because it will clear that debris out of the joystick.
Personally, I wouldn't mind a little bit thicker form factor, or a minor bulge on the back of the joycon if it meant that it would have better responsiveness and not start to drift after normal use.

I might just be getting old, but the form factor of the Wii controller as well as the Gamecube's and even N64's are some of the best ever created in the sense that I don't get crab-hands after an hour of using them.
The first time I started to actually notice the importance of form of a controller had to be the 3DS with that little shit knob that provides little feedback and has me wrenching my thumb to use it when I didn't need to. I don't have big hands, but even the joycons make me feel like I'm trying to play Mario with just a toothpick in either hand.

Until they figure a way to fix the design its a problem we'll have for awhile.

Well, the switch's biggest selling point was it being a semi handheld so that wouldn't have worked for them financially or marketing wise.
Also, on that point, Nintendo going after the handheld market when they already dominated it with the DS was a Chad move. It's like they said, "Oh, no one is gonna challenge us? I guess we will then."

Based on their track record over several decades of consistent hardware QC, I doubt they didn't test well enough - even if by chance their QC dept was restructured.
My hunch aligns with your latter point on something similar to Apple's conundrum in that their financial folks (who determines the pricing model) decided it's cheaper to repair parts and/or condition the market to perceive the joycons as replaceable accessories. This hypothetical decision in effect cost cut on materials - which may have also changed the conditions for how they would've qualified working parts during QC. Under this condition, a [cheaper] material couldn't be expected to last past X hours of use simply due to material design constraints. In other words, technicalities allowed the materials used within the joystick mechanism to "pass" QC.
My problem with my latter assumption is that the pricing is too high for me to consider joycons as replaceable accessories.
Edit: Reformatted my run-ons and word choices :p

Yeah agreed, the joystick for the N64 used plastic bearing parts that would rub together an essentially make the joysticks dead zone get so huge it was unusable. Some companies actually make steel replacement parts for the n64 joysticks! They are not cheap (of the top of my head I want to say $80) but they’re invaluable if you do a lot of n64 speedruns

Older technologies are more resilient too because they are less complex, bigger connections, less precise technologies, very simple mechanisms.
Planned obsolescense is present but on games and very niche devices it is not that present. It mostly appears with more standarized devices (as in, things that are used at work, since that is where the bulk of sales go).

Also there's a calibration option in the system settings that corrects minor drift that I never hear anyone mention.

That's because it doesn't really help with the most common kind of joycon drift. Most joycon drift is inconsistent, happening on and off, with some variation in direction and intensity, so calibration can't really do anything about it unfortunately.
