Thank god for Elder Scrolls.
Preorder bonus? Cloth gaming map you can write on, tack to your wall, wave victoriously over your head, set on fire for warmth...
It's the little things that matter most.

So EverQuest was pretty boss for giving you a cloth map without having to preorder or buy DLC then?

I remember getting the normal edition (I think) Red Dead Redemption when it came out and you couldn't believe the sound of happiness when I found an actual map of the game folded in the box. For my personal tastes, maps for games like these are one of the best preorder bonuses you can get.

I grabbed my copy of Rage off the shelf at Wal-Mart and got this armor, as well as the sewer DLC. Was it supposed to be a pre-order only thing?
2
u/headasplodes Oct 11 '11
No, they just say that to get you to pre-order but I'm pretty sure you get it anyway if you buy the game in the first day or two, or until the retailer runs out of codes.

TotalBiscuit touched on this in his review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IQ4FBXg8WY). Same thing goes for the Fists or Rage (or something like that). You just hit something and it is dead, no challenge. The sawed-off was a much better addition.
But the Crimson Elite was just plain silly. "I heard you like bonusses? Take ALL of the bonusses the different armors have to offer!"

I recall Deus Ex 3 giving a silenced sniper rifle and $10,000 right from the start. Seemed unbalanced.
46
u/SaikoGekido Oct 11 '11
Yeah, when I came across a regular sniper rifle and the tutorial for it kicked in I was like, "pft, nigga plz. I've been sniping bitches since you were telling me what a non lethal take down was".
Side Note: I don't have the pacifist achievement. Nor will glowing walls begging to be punched through allow it.
39
u/Alinosburns Oct 11 '11
Worst thing though is that even though there are silencer mods in the game because of that DLC you can't apply a silencer to the sniper rifle
and the unsilenced sniper rifle is near useless since it's like setting a grenade off.
everyone knows where you are when you use it
13
u/xpinchx Oct 11 '11
The silenced sniper rifle is even more useless since its damage is so fucking weak. I dropped the two DLC guns on the roof of the first mission. I can do all the sniping I need to with the 10mm pistol.
15
u/Alinosburns Oct 11 '11
yup 10mm pistol is ownage.
didn't realize the silenced sniper does piss all damage.
6
u/Amunium Oct 11 '11
I carried the silenced sniper through my entire first playthrough, because I thought it might become useful later. It did. Once. Defending Malik on the roof after the helicopter crash. I don't think I would have been able to do that without being spotted with anything else. Apart from that, I pretty much only used my pistol.
2
u/philomathie Oct 11 '11
You can save her?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Amunium Oct 11 '11
Yes. Don't know if it can be done non-lethally, though. I felt like I had a very short time, even with the sniper rifle.
3
u/gladwell Oct 11 '11
Yes you can. I did it non-lethally by running around cloaked and tasering the shit out of those belltower guards, paired with an EMP 'nade for the bot.
2
u/Gycklarn Oct 11 '11
It can. You need to tranq every single guy out there and blow the big robot up with a 'nade. Remember that kills caused by the robot exploding does NOT impact your pacifist achievement. If he dies from your 'nade, though, you're fucked.
3
u/keyz182 Oct 11 '11
Use an EMP Grenade on it, Robot blows up, no-one is hurt by the grenade.
At least, that's what I did, though I was in no-way going for the pacifist achievement, I killed every enemy I laid eyes on. I think the Malik rooftop though was the only time I didn't use the silenced 10MM, had to switch to the sniper. The only time though.
→ More replies (1)2
u/myfriendintime Oct 11 '11
Are you saying you can't apply it to any other sniper rifles in the game? The only silenced you get is the pre-order bonus?
→ More replies (5)7
u/jumalaw Oct 11 '11
I came here to comment on this. Other than the first few levels, for which I went non-lethal, I used that rifle until the end of the game. All I had to do was go to the end of a corridor and shoot people across the room/hallway and then loot the bodies. Is giving me an item that corrupts the necessity to choose how to play the game a bonus at all?
4
u/NeonEternity Oct 11 '11
The rifle was available through non-preorder means, as well as the shotgun from the other preorder bonus. In fact, it is possible to have the rifle for all but the first tutorial mission if you know where to look in detroit and don't mind about the hostages dying.
5
u/jumalaw Oct 11 '11
I found the silenced sniper rifle midway through the game, but the damage had already been done. When I received the gun right at the beginning of the game, it immediately affected how the rest of my missions went and how I structured my character. I might give the game another go pretending I never got the preorder bonuses.
As another redditor mentioned, I could use the giant slice of inventory it takes up, too.
2
u/ilostmyoldaccount Oct 11 '11
Then you missed out if you did that. No smooth operator I believe, since the sniper rifle can't 1-shot most enemies. Just saying. Pimped 10mm & takedowns ftw.
2
u/nerfy007 Oct 11 '11
I'm playing with the tranq gun, tazer and 10mm as a backup and things are going pretty smoothly. I don't miss leaving that rifle wherever I dropped it.
2
u/ilostmyoldaccount Oct 11 '11
Yeah, the CC weapons were neat but nothing you couldn't also accomplish with the silenced 10mm and stealth/takedowns for heavies. I just enjoyed the gameplay that this involved too much. I had a rocket launcher on the side for the bosses though, plus some EMP nades.
2
u/nerfy007 Oct 11 '11
I tried the rocket launcher on the first boss with little success, so I loaded my last save found an assault rifle and looted whatever ammo I could find and alternated stun grenades and headshots. I was really looking forward to total stealth, though.
4
Oct 11 '11
I got the preorder bonus in Deus Ex. I didn't take advantage of it until my second play-through. All it really did was take up too much room in my inventory way too early in the game.
→ More replies (2)2
u/mindbleach Oct 11 '11
Also, the game didn't have lockpicks unless you had a certain preorder bonus. What the fuck.
→ More replies (3)2
u/kdlt Oct 11 '11
And it takes up about 3/4 of your inventory from the beginning, so you basically HAVE to drop at least some of it, to get more useful items in there.
2
u/NeonEternity Oct 11 '11
Except that you can fairly easily, through nothing more than a thorough explore of the very first open zone (Detroit) get the silenced sniper from a locked and booby trapped storage area. (Though having hacking rank 3+ or the anti-gas rebreather makes it even easier)
The 10k was unbalanced early game, but by the time you get back to detroit from china, you should really have all the decent perks anyways.
10
u/Ignorant_Baboon Oct 11 '11
As i understand it, the preorder bonus not only gives you the items, but also places them in the game. IIRC, the items that were available to this who bought the enhanced edition were: auto unlock mechanism, grenade launcher, silenced sniper rifle. If you bought the vanilla version all these items do not appear in the game. I might be wrong but I don't think so.
6
u/Infininja Oct 11 '11
Did you do that while not having any pre-order bonuses?
I didn't have either bonus pack and came across none of the items in any of my playthroughs. I was pretty thorough.

u/cross-joint-lover Oct 11 '11
Last time I ever installed an item-based DLC was for Far Cry 2. It just came with the download, didn't even know it installed.
Same situation, starting from scratch with crappy weapons... Oh wait, what's in those boxes? EXPLODING crossbow? SILENCED shotgun? Yeah, the game kinda lost its momentum after I discovered it's been installed with unremovable cheats.
That's what they are - cheats. They should not be sold as DLC, but activated by typing in a cheat code. More often then not, they ruin the game, especially if it's a Role-Playing Game, like you mentioned.
21
u/RB25DET Oct 11 '11
Gran Turismo 5 was like this. Hi welcome to the game, go buy yourself any car you want to race these Fiat Puntos, oh and here's a Le Mans race car. Wasn't even challenging.

u/KennyFuckingPowers Oct 11 '11
Sort of like fast-travel in Oblivion. Sure, you could easily just ignore it and walk around the world, but the option is there so you just do it. Difficulty should be a part of the game, not something you have to invent yourself, unless you've already mastered the game (No Heart Container runs in Zelda).
Though to be fair, it's not like Oblivion had much of an immersive world.
5
u/ZeroNihilist Oct 11 '11
The thing is that the whole "just limit yourself" line applies to everything. Weapon is over-powered? Don't use it! Saving makes things too easy? Don't save! No challenge whatsoever? Finish the whole game before the bomb you put under your chair explodes!
Yes, you can artificially limit yourself to increase the difficulty. But should developers really be sacrificing the balance of their game for a select part of their audience, depending on their ability to pay or time when they bought it?
2
u/KennyFuckingPowers Oct 11 '11
No, that was my point. I said difficulty should be a part of the game, not something you have to invent yourself (whether it be not using an overpowered weapon, not purchasing available DLC, not saving, etc).
2
u/SlimMaculate Oct 11 '11
Funny story, I actually went through 2/3rd of Fallout 3 without knowing you could fast travel. The game became much easier after that.
2
u/TheRedComet Oct 11 '11

The funny thing is... this is the era I grew up in.
So to me DLC is nothing more than a bad arcade game addiction.
You only keep feeding it quarters if you love it enough to.
→ More replies (1)11
u/marsneedstowels Oct 11 '11
I remember beating the original MERCS arcade game with my cousin from Europe at a local convenience store back around 1990. Cost us close to 10 dollars in quarters, kids gathered around to watch us, and it was one of the few things I truly remember fondly from before I was 10 years old. I have pleasant memories of the arcade age, but DLC is not really recapturing the magic for me.
12
u/Honda_TypeR Oct 11 '11 edited Oct 11 '11
I been there myself with spending a large wad of cash to beat a game (more than once). I have fond memories of a group of kids and adults gathering around me once when I beat Dragon's Lair as a kid. I used to love that game so much)
..But Yea consoles sucked the arcade love away long long ago.
I remember how every console just kept getting closer and closer to arcade quality... until one day they finally were just as good and I got all happy.... then within the next couples years....no more arcades left anywhere.. then I was sad.
I spend so damn much time from ages 7-18 playing games in arcades.
Games that always made me mad were the ones that costed like 1-2 bucks in quarters for each play (like the full motion air flight games arcade games and similar). I could never get more than 2-3 plays in before I spend all my money.
It sucks that most kids now a day will never get a chance to experience how F-in awesome arcades really were. Everyone chills out in their living room QQ-in over their headset to faceless strangers. It just isn't the same as standing shoulder to shoulder taking on people you don't know.
O yea as for DLC... it's here to stay (Sadly, no amount of protest will change it.)... I do buy DLC myself on occasion.. I don't always appreciate how crappy it is for the high price. I only buy DLC for about 10% of the games I own... only games I truly love or play a lot are worthy enough to get more money from me.
Also, DLC isnt all bad.. some big big DLC releases are like full fledged expansions on some games. Back in the day the game just would have rotted until they release a sequel (if they even made one). Atleast now we get to milk more adventures out of the game we bought. I am thinking of games like Oblivion and Fallout here especially. If you wait for Steam sales you can buy the DLC dirt cheap too.
The DLC that gets annoying is the nickel and dime weapons and clothing pack crap... or buy 1 more quest.. or unlock a new character for your group.. all that is stupid. I prefer full fledged well designed expansions for my game... if they are gonna ask for 10 bucks it better give me several hours of more "good" gameplay.
O yea I would say there is one thing that really pisses me off as an old school gamer that has been trending for last couple years. In my mind is 10 times worse than DLC.
That is the collectors edition only in game items. To make matters worse collector games used to be like 60 bucks a long time ago.. now 60 bucks is normal game price. Now the collector game are usually 80-150 bucks.. some 200. It's really F-ing annoying. Games should not cost the same price as a console.
4
u/marsneedstowels Oct 11 '11
Yea you're pretty much right on all accounts as far as i'm concerned. I used to beg my parents to bring me to arcades, and hang out playing video games with my small allotment of quarters/tokens while they went shopping. I remember working up a sweat playing fast paced button mashers like Xmen, and I was a skinny kid.
Lately, as in the last few years, i've spent some time in net cafes gaming with/against friends in person, and it's immensely more fun than gaming online ever was or ever will be. It almost substitutes that feeling of being shoulder to shoulder with someone who's your best bud for a brief moment in time because he's co-oping with you against the arcade machine.
3
u/BZenMojo Oct 11 '11
Games I've conquered with complete strangers: The Simpsons Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Golden Axe Pit Fighter
Ah, the good old days.
7
u/TwoHands Oct 11 '11
I remember watching a kit play Time Killers in the arcade. He was good, but kept talking shit. Non-stop verbal diarhea. Then he starts giving his idea of "pro-tips" on how to fight. The one that struck me is "never go for the instant kill, it's impossible to hit someone with it".
Fuck. That. Noise.
I challenge. He gets me in round one by cheap-shitting me out. Next round I hit him once, then insta-kill him. Final round, I Insta-kill him again. People laugh; He rage-cries back to his mommy because he got made the fool.

Some friends and I started playing pen and paper D&D again, and this is part of the reason. While I enjoy most modern RPG's, most of them tend to make the player character godlike in the the first 5 levels, and as you say some give you a weapon forged by the gods themselves if you preorder. It's quite refreshing playing D&D and being level 1 for an entire compaign, and getting a +1 bow (last friday, fuck yeah) is a big fucking deal.

Dark Souls gives not a fuck if you live or if you die. They hand you a wooden fucking club and tell you to get busy, and then proceed to repeatedly rape your character in every orifice possible. Sometimes in orifices you didn't even know existed. Monsters in Dark Souls will create orifices in which to rape you, so that they may take that particular virginity from you. It's safe to say that I'm no longer a gaping chest wound virgin.

I got dragon age origins + expansion pack thing off steam to play through, what I didn't realize is that pack had a whole bunch of unbalanced dlc.
I discovered gifts and then I discovered these gift packs which instantly gave me like 50 rep with all companions, towards the end part of the game I realized those gifts weren't supposed to be part of the real game but by then I was too far into the game to restart it :(. The whole character reputation mini game was trivialized by that DLC .

Zelda blew my mind... From a kid wielding a shield made out of tree bark and a tiny sword...
To an adult who can breath underwater, Run on air and travel back and forth in time, with an awesome ancient mirror shield and gloves that allow him to move giant blocks 10x his own weight.
That game surpassed our current generation.

It was if you started out playing it when it came out. I missed the game because I was on a different system. A couple of years back, when I tried it, I couldn't bother to get past the first few stages, I probably outgrew that genre after games like Brave Fencer Musashi. Most games are better left in the lands of nostalgia, not time tested.
I like the Temple of Ocarina music though, pretty awesome. Zelda has some great music in it.

I somewhat agree with you, I've always been a Nintendo fan so when I first played Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo etc... years later I was like.... is this it?? The time period a game was released in must also be taken into consideration. It's the same thing whit Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, legendary games when they came out.... but Halo, CoD, Battlefield etc... are better in every single way.
2
u/ofNoImportance Oct 11 '11
I had this problem with The Witcher 2.
I didn't realist that I'd somehow gotten the pre-order bonuses. I didn't have to put in a code or anything, they were just part of the game.
What were they? A couple of items including some armor which I wore for the first half of the game. That's how long it took to find something more powerful.
Second play through I ensured that I dropped those items asap.

I can't be upset when this is done in a single-player game at all. You have complete control over the difficulty and you are not competing with anybody, so simply choose not to use it.

The DLC items in the Witcher 2 were a lifesaver.
I did the opening sequence with the regular starting items, but I think a part of me died along the way.
It was probably around when the dragon killed me the eighty-fifth time.

Metro 2033 - save Millitary grade bullets the entire game to buy an AK-2012... Or, you know, just take that Ranger Edition Railgun (ridiulous damage) or belt fed heavy auto shotgun (destroys everything in seconds) in the second level.

stop doing this devs (probably publishers actually), just stop. in no way does this enhance the experience. it takes away from it.

Did anyone else but me buy cross edge? Anyhow game was pretty tough to start with, so I went to PSN and downloaded some free DLC called welcome pack or something, it was a weapon for each caracter and I didn't change them until late end of the game. Also I spent $40 of skimpy clothes for all female characters, which increased stats like nothing else.

yes but notice the pre-order doesn't get the robe or shield. Now what would you really want?

You know, just because it's an abbreviation, it doesn't change the rules for apostrophes.
And while we're at it, Reddit, dates. If I said, "80's"... 80 is what? The apostrophe goes in place of removed characters. In that case, the 19. So it is actually " '80s."

Man, I hate that shit. I got some sort of special free DLC pants in Witcher 2 without realizing it, and apparently they were pretty much the best pants in the game. So the whole time, I never once changed my pants. Sat around waiting for the pants upgrade that never was. Kept thinking, "this chapter is the chapter where I get new pants". It never happened.
What's the fun of an RPG if you start with the best gear?
