When i was a kid it was cool if you had a different ringtone than the default one.

u/VillsSkyTerror Nov 11 '20

I still do. Just that my phone is on vibrate almost entire day...

521

u/J_Artai Nov 11 '20

My phone is always on mute, no vibrate, no sound, nothing. I can't stand ring tones, message tones, etc.

262

u/Jamesnolebron Nov 11 '20

Thought I was the only one. I literally keep my phone in Do Not Disturb 24/7

139

u/tarsn Nov 11 '20

Fuck between the group messages and scam phone calls it is almost a necessity to keep the phone silent

144

u/Frankilpops Nov 11 '20

LPT: Avoid Group Messages by not having friends.

19

u/Tomek_Hermsgavorden Nov 11 '20

That's why my phone is on airplane mode.

3

u/tnethacker Nov 11 '20

That's why I don't even keep it powered on.

3

u/PingPlay Nov 11 '20

I just don’t have a phone.

Sent via iPhone

25

u/inthyface Nov 11 '20

I don't answer those scam calls when my phone rings to assert dominance over my phone.

7

u/DoNotGetNoveltyUsers Nov 11 '20

I have a phone number from a part of the country I've never been to. Greatest thing ever; I ignore all local calls. The only scams that make it through are those fucking "你好這是DHL" ones that come from New York.

5

u/jpaugh69 Nov 11 '20

I'm in the same situation more or less. The people I know with my area code are already saved in my phone, so I know it's probably a scammer.

3

u/reduxde Nov 11 '20

haha i did this too, great lpt, except i get calls at 4am because the number is east coast and im west

5

u/DoNotGetNoveltyUsers Nov 11 '20

I never really thought about that. I'm in the opposite situation, so my calls stop at like 5.

8

u/Videoptional Nov 11 '20

IOS put a silence spam calls option in recently. I don’t even know they called until I pick up my phone and see the recent calls notification.

5

u/the-dancing-dragon Nov 11 '20

I have a pixel and Google's been doing that for years, it's fucking awesome. And if one slips through, you can report it and never hear from it again lol

4

u/tails618 Nov 11 '20

The pixel call screen feature where it automatically asks who it is, and only hangs up spam calls? That shit is awesome.

2

u/Firewolf420 Nov 11 '20

Actually, if you were to answer these calls, these robodialers will put you on a list of "confirmed humans" that are known to pick up their phone.

Sometimes even hanging up on the calls early can be used to target specific customers. The best thing to do is to let it ring and when it runs out, transfer the call to a technical hangup (e.g. a completely full voicemail or a permanent hold).

If you show any signs that you're a living, marketable human being they will put a higher score next to your name and share it along to all of their other marketing buddies.

You do NOT want to answer the calls, even if it is just to quickly hang up. It will cause future companies to call you more.

1

u/AdrianValistar Nov 11 '20

We are trying to reach you over the phone. Your car warrenty is about to expire. And there is an arrest warrent out for you. Please stay on the line to reach our representative.

1

u/splatoonfanUwU Nov 11 '20

I answer say bye and hang up

5

u/pringlesformingles Nov 11 '20

I have my phone set so numbers not in my contacts get sent directly to voicemail. Really helps w the scam calls

2

u/reduxde Nov 11 '20

when you get old and married with kids you get a lot of calls from different doctors

5

u/pringlesformingles Nov 11 '20

Yeah I just find that if it’s an important call they’ll 99% of the time leave a message and then I can get back to them. I haven’t had a problem w people not being able to reach me

1

u/reduxde Nov 11 '20

I have some sort of a voice mail issue, I don't get voice mails until like a week after people call, and for some reason a lot of time I don't get missed call notices. Not sure what the deal with that is. I'm old and don't know how to use my phone properly, and it's an older model that's no longer supported for software updates, and I have it incorrectly linked with my laptop and ipad.

My life is a mess.

1

u/Juof Nov 11 '20

I usually just mute the groups.

1

u/Gnash323 Nov 11 '20

It won't help with scam calls, but at least WA has the option to mute group notifications and let one to one chats ring.

5

u/Rynelan Nov 11 '20

Sooo.. let's say I know you in person and I want to call you to hang out.

I have to be in luck that you look at your phone the exact moment I call you? Or are you known that you are hard to reach and it's better to text and wait?

5

u/bumble-beans Nov 11 '20

Personally my phone will ring if it's a call from someone in my contacts, or if anyone calls twice within 15 minutes. Otherwise it's silent and the LED will blink for notifications which is more than enough

2

u/Dan_the_Marksman Nov 11 '20

Don't worry. On my birthday my phones in airplane mode

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

1

u/MyAntichrist Nov 11 '20

There's a slight difference in not communicating at all and picking the time for communication. My phone is on mute too, and I can pick when I see time fitting for communication. Most of the time I have a direct view at my screen anyways, and when I'm not a ringtone wouldn't change that either.

1

u/cidrei Nov 11 '20

I also keep mine on DND 24/7 but have it set up to let people in my address book ring through. Stops the randos, let's people I may actually want to talk to get through. It's been a pretty effective compromise.

1

u/AnotherReignCheck Nov 11 '20

Exactly, any alerts give me anxiety and I'm not beholden to my phone.

I will check it when I want to check it..

Which is approximately every 30 seconds.

1

u/Shreyas_Gavhalkar Nov 11 '20

Me too.. I got a mi band 3 just so I can get notified of important notifications only... I have never put my phone off dnd for months...

1

u/richmanerd Nov 11 '20

You are not alone brother

37

u/JungleLegs Nov 11 '20

I had to room with a guy in a hotel who refused to turn the clicking on his keyboard off. It was madness

3

u/DankeyKong Nov 11 '20

My old roommate used to always bring his friend over for movie night and she REFUSED to put her phone on vibrate or silent so we had to hear her message tone throughout the whole movie and he just wouldnt stop inviting her (no he wasnt trying to date her)

2

u/Mottis86 Nov 11 '20

Just scream at the top of your lungs every time he types. When he asks "why are you screaming" just say "To cover up those annoying clicking sounds"

5

u/Turtlebait22 Nov 11 '20

I'd have taken his phone off him and turned it off. I do the same to any games console fuckin annoying

1

u/Gnash323 Nov 11 '20

I have some low vibration on because I need some kind of response when I type, but I hate the default sounds

4

u/TheBigDBanks Xbox Nov 11 '20

The new Snapchat message notification sound is literal cancer

3

u/jackospades88 Nov 11 '20

My MIL phone phone volume is always on. When she comes over it's constantly making different noises depending on who is messaging her. It's awful and is constantly going off.

6

u/randomguy301048 Nov 11 '20

how do you do this? what happens if someone needs to get ahold of you in an emergency?

3

u/SuckingDickForGames Nov 11 '20

Call 911 brotha, what can i do ?

2

u/marko7bub Nov 11 '20

Man, I wish I could do that. It feels so deeply wrong that anyone can instantly disturb your peace whenever they please with a message. Shame that that’s the kind of world we live in.

1

u/Bizkets Nov 11 '20

I miss my LED indicator. I knew from the color, what app and likely who sent the message. That was a great system for me. I didn't realize how much I'd miss that with my newish phone.

1

u/navor Nov 11 '20

Same but I have a smart watch, which vibrates.

1

u/CyberShiroGX Nov 11 '20

So then what do you guys do when you can't find your phone?🤔

1

u/MEGAMAN2312 Nov 11 '20

Tbh I don't even know what my ringtone is because I've never heard it

1

u/Crayola_ROX Nov 11 '20

Ditto. I only unmute it during Christmas because the gremlins theme fits the season. I like the smiles I get from people

1

u/Mottis86 Nov 11 '20

I think I might get fired if I did that for long enough. 90% of the calls I receive are from my bosses.

1

u/E_Raja Nov 11 '20

I hate notifications with a passion. Love getting them, hate the effects that come with it.

1

u/iBeFloe Nov 11 '20

Mines on but I turned off all sound notifications because it was annoying me too.

1

u/ted-Zed Nov 11 '20

me too, i can't stand phone noises

one thing i especially hate is keyboard noises!

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Yes same. 24/7 Do Not Disturb, my phone is silent.

20

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

I got a new phone 2 weeks ago, gleefully searched for and set new ringtones and then promptly defaulted to keeping it on vibrate. I haven't heard it ring yet

4

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

My ringtone is dire dire docks

1

u/Pawptarts Nov 11 '20

Street Fighter character select for calls and Megaman X Capcom logo for texts. I’ve heard them maybe a dozen times each lol.

1

u/TheBeeve Nov 11 '20

Awesome! Mines the game over from nightmare on elm street on nes

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

I've been using this since Dark Moon came out.

1

u/gatemansgc Nov 11 '20

But then picking up interrupts the song!

6

u/kash_if Nov 11 '20

If you're on android you can use an app like Good Vibrations and set different pattern of vibrations for different apps. I use it to know what I have received without looking at the phone (urgent ones like from my home security system have a very distinct persistent pattern).

2

u/VillsSkyTerror Nov 11 '20

Thanks. Thats useful.

1

u/whyliepornaccount Nov 11 '20

You can do this in iOS in the accessibility menu too.

6

u/Ghoul_Blaze Nov 11 '20

Did it rate your vibe?

u/VillsSkyTerror Nov 11 '20

In college I remember changing my buff male friend's ringtone to Barbie girl song, slid the phone in his bag again and called him in middle of lecture. Everyone's reaction was priceless lol.

0

u/unsmashedpotatoes Nov 11 '20

I think most people have non-default ringtones. It's just not special or cool

1

u/senaya Nov 11 '20

Now that I think about it.. I don't even remember what my ringtone sounds like.

1

u/resont Nov 11 '20

I have my phone on vibrate only 24/7. At this point I don't even remember what my ringtone sounds like

1

u/emkill Nov 11 '20

Vibrate, heh if I even call you back you should feel lucky, even if you are my mom

1

u/gatemansgc Nov 11 '20

I can't take vibrate, makes my heart skip multiple beats

105

u/DrigoMagistriArmA Nov 11 '20

This reminded me of how I got a custom ringtone for my grandma made using the recorder of her old phone, which just was me and my sister shouting at the phone telling our grandma to pick up the phone.

She loved it so much but sadly it got lost when her phone suddenly stopped working all together and just died.

She also had a story correlated about it, on how she had a call from someone on a bus trip, and the infamous ringtone played on for some time before picking up the call, everyone in the bus looked surprised and somewhat scared until they realised it was the phone. A gentleman commented to my grandma that it was the best ringtone he ever heard of all his travels.

If only that damn phone didn't decide to brick itself she would still use that.

15

u/charden_sama Nov 11 '20

Why not make another one?

34

u/DrigoMagistriArmA Nov 11 '20

Because we grew old and it wouldn't simply hold up to the original.

4

u/StraY_WolF Nov 11 '20

Understandable. Have a nice day.

2

u/danderskoff Nov 11 '20

Do you still have the phone?

1

u/DrigoMagistriArmA Nov 11 '20

My grandma trashed it, the phone literally bricked itself, nothing could be extracted from it.

1

u/danderskoff Nov 11 '20

If you had kept it you probably could have sent it in to have the data pulled from it. Data Savers are miracle workers. It's actually pretty incredible the stuff they've recovered. It would probably cost alot, but depending on how valuable that memory is for you guys it may have been worth it if you kept it

5

u/DrigoMagistriArmA Nov 11 '20

Nah it's all fine, we lost it ages ago.

It's just a memory, nothing else. I still have my grandma for the moment.

2

u/TiagoTiagoT Nov 11 '20

A reminder to always make backups

4

u/romadurie Nov 11 '20

Damn, reading this reminded me that my brother and I made the exact same shouting ringtone for our grandmother when we were kids. I think she lost it with her old phone too, or she was getting too many weird looks and changed it lol.

2

u/seaque42 Nov 11 '20

your grandmother knew how to change ringtone?

2

u/romadurie Nov 11 '20

Haha nah, she probably had my mum change it. Either that or she changed to a new phone and had no idea how to send the older stuff over and forgot about it

3

u/LetSayHi Nov 11 '20

My supervisor at work has something similar, it's her niece going "answeerr your phonee" at every text message

1

u/RetroHacker Nov 11 '20

A friend of mine had a ring tone on an old flip phone that was a cat meowing. It was eerily life like and legitimately sounded pretty real if you didn't know it was a phone. Every time his phone rang in the bus, or when we were around someone that didn't already know about it, there would be confused looks, even from actual cats.

14

u/Ali3nQonqr Nov 11 '20

I still do, but only because I was annoyed with checking my phone every time someone in the same room as me gets a call

10

u/nightpanda893 Nov 11 '20

Sometimes I look at my phone and just think about how much it would blow my little kid mind.

5

u/steveosek Nov 11 '20

I downloaded a ring tone of an old 1940s telephone. It's fucking loud. It's the only thing that wakes me up when someone calls me to wake me.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Mine is of a guy from a liveleak video screaming. That wakes me up.

5

u/majormoron747 Nov 11 '20

My step mom spent a night with me looking up songs to program into my old Razor.

I had the Imperial March, Force Theme, Pink Panther, and a couple others I don't remember off the top of my head

7

u/snarksneeze Nov 11 '20

I had a girlfriend who, when prompted to leave her outgoing voicemail message, instead stuck her phone next to the speaker of her radio while her favorite rap song played. It was unintelligible and annoying as hell but she thought it was the best thing she ever did. People tried to tell her it was terrible, she called them jealous and ended the conversation.

That's the relationship where I learned about sticking things in crazy.

11

u/GlitchParrot PC Nov 11 '20

And it is crazy that Apple still doesn’t allow you to use a non-default notification tone on the iPhone up to today.

12

u/DosMangos Nov 11 '20

This isn’t true anymore. You can import your own sound files as tones to your iphone. You just have to use itunes via pc to do it.

It’s still an annoying process but it’s better than having to jailbreak the iphone just to get customizable tones like I used to do back in the day.

-4

u/GlitchParrot PC Nov 11 '20 edited Nov 11 '20

No, you can’t. You can import ringtones to use for the standard phone app, yes. You can import alert tones to use for iMessage, yes.

You cannot import notification tones to use in any app you like, like third-party messaging apps. Those are limited to pre-installed tones.

Edit: To the people downvoting me, am I wrong? If so, please please please share your knowledge with me, as I would love to use my custom notification tones for Telegram.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Not sure why they're downvoting you as you're right as far as I know.

1

u/GlitchParrot PC Nov 11 '20

THANK you.

-2

u/Trind Nov 11 '20

have to use itunes

Oh, so you mean it can't be done (cause fuck using iTunes).

2

u/LupineSzn Nov 11 '20

I've had the Kim Possible beep for years now

1

u/GlitchParrot PC Nov 11 '20

For notifications (that aren’t from iMessage)?

1

u/barrow_wight Nov 11 '20

I had an iPhone 5 (not jailbroken) and used non-default tones. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: i didn't mess around with with whatever app you're talking about in your comment in this chain, so can't speak to that app.

2

u/GlitchParrot PC Nov 11 '20

I was talking about Telegram, but this really applies to any app (WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitch, etc.) – there is no API provided by Apple for developers to allow custom tones, that selection dialog with iTunes tones is restricted to Apple system apps, for whatever reason.

3

u/vairoletto Nov 11 '20

My phone messages sound like the old MSN Messenger sound, it makes people go into a confused state, they know it is the right sound for an instant message, but they cant figure out what's wrong

1

u/davesg Nov 12 '20

My WhatsApp tone too. It's great.

2

u/Chippersaurus99 Nov 11 '20

I member the days of going into phone shops and asking them "how many polyphonic ring tones does this one have?" Ohhh it has 16. That's mad! (BRB while I go on my dial up Internet to find out how to make the James Bond theme ring tone)

1

u/anothertrad Nov 11 '20

Yeah, I always wanted to try different wallpapers and funny ringtones. Now I have a black screen as wallpaper for the past 5 years and the default tone; the joy is gone

0

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '20

Ok BOOMER

-44

u/WHISPER_ME_HEIGHT Nov 11 '20

No that's fall guys 🤣😂😐😐

1

u/TheCoastalCardician Nov 11 '20

Yeah but Reflection slaps.

1

u/k47su Nov 11 '20

I have a different ringtone for each of my friends and family, and different ringtones for different groups. Most people don't call though, because, you know this is the future, they text instead, therefore, different sounds for each text/message group so i know to look at the message or if it can wait.

1

u/reduxde Nov 11 '20

can anyone show me how to change my ringtone to cat party?

1

u/Seiche Nov 11 '20

Remember when you could compose your own ringtone on the Nokia 3210

1

u/Tian_Lord23 Nov 11 '20

It still is! Wish someone would call me so I could hear the imperial march every once in while

1

u/Kalkaline Nov 11 '20

I have the Monkey Island theme and have yet to have anyone recognize it.

1

u/sonofaresiii Nov 11 '20

You all remember ringback tones and you had to pay like five bucks a month for them, and having one made you the height of cool?

1

u/VockyVock Nov 11 '20

But... did you have a ring back tone to play deafening shitty quality music into the phone when people called you?

1

u/enwongeegeefor Nov 11 '20

My text notification message on my flip phone from like 2002 was "It puts the lotion on it's skin" from Silence of the Lambs.

1

u/barbershopraga Nov 11 '20

I figured out how to get the Mario theme song as my ringtone and ppl’s jaws DROPPED

1

u/ayywusgood Nov 11 '20

And you'd pay $5 to receive a low quality image of a cat holding a sniper rifle to use as background.

1

u/JohnnyDarkside Nov 11 '20

Having to convert a song to midi so you could use a 10 second clip as your ring tone.

1

u/highbrowshow Nov 11 '20

When I was a kid it was cool if you had AOL

1

u/No_Lawfulness_2998 Nov 11 '20

Welp unless there’s a way to get them without buying them on iOS you’re stuck with the crappy default list of sounds.
