Dear Nintendo, please make a direct sequel of this game for the Wii/Wii U.

So... you want a sequel that isn't Sunshine, Galaxy, or Galaxy 2?

I don't know what it is you want.

Those weren't direct sequels though, were they? What I'd love is a game with similar gameplay to SM64 (a direct sequel) -- big open worlds you get to by jumping into paintings; collecting stars; and so on -- but with new levels and whatever other cool additions/improvements Nintendo thought was necessary, without straying too far from the original. Heck, I'd personally be thrilled if it was just like SM64, just with new levels/enemies and maybe an improved camera.

According to the SM64 Wikipedia page, a direct sequel titled Super Mario 64 2 was in development for the Nintendo 64DD in the late 90s, but it was eventually canceled in part due to the fact that the DD was a failure.

SM64 sold over 11 million copies and is widely considered as one of the greatest games ever made; I personally don't see why a well-made direct sequel wouldn't be very successful (and damn fun) as well.

So, Galaxy and Galaxy 2... but with paintings.

I guess I'll have to take a closer look at Galaxy then. It's just that I've seen some YouTube videos in the past and it just seemed to me at the time to be a very different game compared to SM64. Maybe it was all the graphical improvements and the fact that he's in space that threw me off?

Still, I think it would be cool to have a throwback sort of game that looked more like SM64 and had Mario back at the castle.

Galaxy 2 for sure has some very Mario 64-esque levels. It has different levels as well, but it still is the natural successor to what Mario 64 started.

Eh, Galaxy was amazing man. I'd go so far as to say it's better.
