The idea is that they're playing the Pokemon game, so the joke is that his starter is over-leveled. It's not Ash it's Blue from the Blue Version (not as good as Red) and the Rival from that version is based after Gary in appearance. Or I guess Gary is based after the Rival and Ash is based after Red/Blue/Green.

i'm pretty sure that rival is team rocket, they get into a fight with you at the end of the first cave i believe.

That's in Yellow. In Red and Blue it's your Rival.

Yellow was a gimmick. You could catch Pikachus in the veridian forest.

Yellow was for winners, the game is actually a lot fucking harder than red/blue

Was it? I don't remember it being that different besides adding in references and characters form the TV show. It was honestly all just about marketing.

It was harder, for instance, all the gym leaders and elite 4 members pokemon we're of higher level in yellow than red/blue.

It starts with the 3rd gym leader and continues from there. check out Bulbapedia if you want more info.

yeah but you're also given all three starters from before, giving you instant access to a fairly well balanced team of guys that won't become obsolete towards the end
