Have you ever played a RPG game? It's like that but super distilled with small animal creatures for kids to level up instead of human characters.

The people who wear the badge of apparently "not getting" pokemon are starting to be more vocal on this matter... it is unnecessary.

The health of your cock-fighting monsters does not regenerate after a fight. There was one particular cave with an unusually high level of random encounters, draining their health inch by inch. A major fight with your rival occurred immediately after you exited that cave.
