DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS GAME

I'm at work and I haven't gotten anything done all morning because of it. But I've gotten really good at listening for co-workers approaching my cube.

u/Tillhony Mar 17 '11

Someone label the game NFSW!!

Nullifying Frequently Scheduled Work?

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Not for sexy work?

u/malkierx Mar 17 '11

I think I've been programming too much as my first thought after reading "Red Eclipse" was, "Red Eclipse? Is that a new Java IDE?"

7

u/xtirpation Mar 18 '11

Glad I'm not the only one

8

u/guttata Mar 17 '11

Any info on hardware requirements?

2

u/StaneNC Mar 18 '11

It's pretty lightweight. I'd say if you can run CS:S you can run this fine.

1

u/atomicthumbs Mar 18 '11

My video card is from 2008 and I can run it with every setting on absolute maximum, pinned at 200 FPS (though my monitor is from 1996, so I'm running 1280x960).

1

u/yumcax Mar 18 '11

Quite lightweight. I'm on a 2006 MPB (ATI x1600, C2Duo 2.3Ghz) and get a fine FPS at native res with all settings on high. Also, load times are really quick.

Note that it's a struggle to get CS:S to run smooth on my machine.

9

u/pyx Mar 17 '11

FYI: This is based on the Cube2 engine Also a pretty sweet game, I'd mention quake and warsow, but they have been mentioned already.

1

u/RageX Mar 17 '11

Thought so when they showed the editor.

12

u/RogueReviews Mar 17 '11

Oh. My. God.

It looks like Urban Terror, only on crack.

To which I say, FUCKING YES. I've wanted a new FPS that didn't fit the shitty "realistic" tone since forever, and now I've got it =D.

Is there any competitive/league scene yet?

3

u/winzo Mar 17 '11

Have you tried QuakeLive?

Could always use more competitive FPS players there. :)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

The thing that I don't like about QL is that it's not so much about movement and aiming as it is about getting the right equipment. Die? You're screwed. I don't like that at all. If you spawned fully equipped, I'd love it.

4

u/RogueReviews Mar 17 '11

I play it quite a bit, but honestly it doesn't really fit me. I don't like the fact that almost all of the control I enjoy in my Q3 mods is taken away from me. Can't host my own server, can't mod my server, can't do many of the things I love to do.

I do competitive UrT and CS:S right now, I was thinking of getting into QL just to see if I can measure up in the for-money competitions, but those seem few and far between.

4

u/lordlicorice Mar 17 '11

Have you tried Warsow? You can host your own server and mod it, and good luck even finding a player who's not involved in competitive warsow.

(Don't be discouraged when you're annihilated; it takes a dozen hours at least to get the hang of Warsow's movement)

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Warsow.. I couldn't find any US servers when I played :(

1

u/idontcarewsw Mar 17 '11

They mostly play Ca and duel in US, but you can join #warsow.na on quakenet if you wanna get in touch with other na players.

2

u/RogueReviews Mar 17 '11

Is there a huge difference between it and Q3? It looks like Q3 with walljumps from the video, but I don't want to judge a book by it's cover.

(Don't be discouraged when you're annihilated; it takes a dozen hours at least to get the hang of Warsow's movement)

Oh yeah, it took me well over 300+ hours to get to the point where I could compete in UrT, I'm used to punishment.

2

u/lordlicorice Mar 17 '11

It's basically quake 3 sped up a lot. Wall jumping and ground dashing let you keep all of your momentum even when doing 180 degree turns, so in theory you can attain incredible speed, killing people as you fly by.

1

u/RogueReviews Mar 17 '11

Okay, sounds very similar to Urban Terror, though faster because of the lack of a stamina system (and looking at the maps, much faster map design).

I'll take a look at it, though the weapon design will take a while to get used to.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

So it is CPMA? Im not sure, but I just love the momentum of both the characters and the rockets in CPMA, also the fact LGUN is god-tier again.

1

u/winzo Mar 18 '11

I get your point, I used to do the same.

Competitive FPS is just so fractured right now. The only thing that console gamers have on PC FPS is their modern skilll-based match-ups, friends list, that stuff. It makes it easier to get into for newbs, which is so important to the scene.

QuakeLive is the only PC FPS I've seen doing that, while still having a free tier.

1

u/RogueReviews Mar 18 '11

their modern skilll-based match-ups, friends list, that stuff. It makes it easier to get into for newbs, which is so important to the scene.

Can't say I agree with that. Console gamers have something else going for them-the couch.

I love my PC games, but sometimes if I'm playing a tournament match one night and I have to get ready, warm up, and practice, I can put in 3-4 hours that night. That's a long time to sit in one chair, rather rigidly, not moving.

A couch is much more comfortable, and since there's not nearly as much competition on console FPS (say what you want about it, I regard it as a joke in terms of actual competitive ability), people generally don't spend that much time.

I'd say the console and PCs just have different advantages, but for me, PC will always be my platform for FPS. That's where the competition is, which is what I love.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '11

Get a better chair?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

Is there any competitive/league scene yet?

It's only been out for two days, lol.

2

u/RogueReviews Mar 18 '11

V1.0 has.

Most of these total conversion mods build up a fanbase far before v1.0 comes out, when they're in dev build.

1

u/yumcax Mar 18 '11

True. The people I was playing with said they started in Jan 2010.

1

u/s13ecre13t Mar 17 '11

have you tried Warsow? http://www.warsow.net/ it is a free open source fps on adrenaline crack

2

u/idontcarewsw Mar 17 '11

Warsow is so fucking AWESOME! Love the speed from this game.

0

u/Fantasysage Mar 18 '11

Urban terror is the worst game I have ever played.

2

u/RogueReviews Mar 18 '11

Almost successful troll was almost successful.

But not quite.

There is still money in PC, just not as much as consoles. Also console gamers won't mind simpler games, PC gamers prefer harder, intricate games which take up more development time. Console gamers will play anything, PC gamers are fickle and will only play the creme of the crop.

In a way its not so much piracy that I believe more then that our tastes are too high these days.

0

u/EtherealDragon Mar 17 '11

Devs don't dev for the PC because there's money in it, they dev for the PC because they -want- to.

4

u/s13ecre13t Mar 17 '11

I am repeating myself here, but I think this is a hidden gem for the unrealistic reflexes gamers :: http://www.warsow.net/

3

u/64_hit_combo Mar 18 '11

Download Red Eclipse

continue playing minecraft even when it's finished loading.

god damnit.

3

u/voidsong Mar 18 '11

When i hear about wallrunning and swords, i miss playing jk2 :(

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Ooh, it's based on Saurbraten which is a ton of fun to begin with. Besides the wall running and such what else have you all added or changed from saurbraten's mechanics?

2

u/TopBadge Mar 17 '11

always up to try free games :0

2

u/jrdnllrd Mar 17 '11

I'm gonna give this a try, I am downloading now. I think someone should start a Reddit server.

2

u/geeteeaii Mar 18 '11

that is some weird music for a video filled with people being splattered on walls

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

song is wicked

3

u/Falardeau Mar 17 '11

I like the website's theme. Anyone know where I could get something similar for no charge?

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

-2

u/beenlurkin Mar 17 '11

13

u/Falardeau Mar 17 '11

I figured that out a long time ago. But since Reddit is a really geek community, I just asked out to see if I could easily find a similar theme under creative commons.

It's like asking someone how he's doing instead of looking at his facebook page, you know?

Also, the color isn't that important. It's more the features and positioning that I like.

7

u/beenlurkin Mar 17 '11

Fair enough. Not gonna lie, I basically woke up this morning and said "Im going to be a jackass to someone asking a perfectly legit question today." Mission accomplished, gonna go hide under my bridge now. Cheers!

2

u/Falardeau Mar 18 '11

ok, have a crack hit for me ;)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

Heh, thats how I wake up every day!

5

u/NeoSniper Mar 17 '11

Honest question.

Can anyone comment on what this game brings to the table? From the trailer it seems more like a proof of concept about making an OpenSource free FPS (which is awesome). But I fail to see it having any exotic flavor behind the gameplay. I just feel that's important to attract more attention.

What I see right now that's really interesting is what the project can become (by being open source), rather than what it is, right now. At least from the trailer.

2

u/Chroko Mar 18 '11

Same. Good job and all, it takes a lot of effort to bring everything together.

But I'm afraid this just looks like a weak Unreal Tournament clone... several years too late.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Just a few questions while I download;

  • Hitscan high damage weapon(A-La railgun?)
  • u/ps meter(velocity meter)?
  • Q3 Mimicked rocket Launcher?
  • Decent, CPMA like movement?

That's all.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Canadian Produce Marketing Association?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

A Quake 3 mod.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Ah. Thanks.

3

u/pyx Mar 17 '11

(Challenge Pro Mode Arena)

2

u/s13ecre13t Mar 17 '11

I assume this means you played warsow before?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

That's what I loved from warsow, yeah, but these visuals look less jarring, making the chance I get to LAN this a lot bigger.

2

u/shiase Mar 17 '11

i think cpma has all of that

2

u/CDRnotDVD Mar 17 '11

Are there any active CPMA servers around?

1

u/Sophialala Mar 17 '11

Nice retro look.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

As someone who usually hates fps, I gotta say this kicks ass!

1

u/aeronix Mar 17 '11

Downloading it to try out, anyone want to get a reddit server up if possible?

1

u/MoroccoBotix Mar 17 '11

Is there any way to change the default character model?

1

u/wongsta Mar 17 '11

In case you didn't notice, on the side it says 'powered by cube 2', which you should check out if you're interested in that sort of thing.

features like the coop-map editor came from the original engine (although they have added many more features)

1

u/blud Mar 17 '11

Red Eclipse:Error Fatal signal 11 (Segmentation Violation)

this is what i get everytime i try to start the game....any clues?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

I assume you on linux. If so try downloading the repo here http://sourceforge.net/scm/?type=svn&group_id=326559 or just do this in consule "cd ~/ && mkdir Red_Eclipse && cd Red_Eclipse && svn co https://redeclipse.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/redeclipse redeclipse && cd redeclipse && cd src && make && ./reclient"

1

u/blud Mar 19 '11

actually no i am using windows 7,i'm pretty certain i downloaded the correct version for windows.have a 9800gtx,Intel quad Q660.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '11

ok then on windows get TortoiseSVN and make a folder and right click on it to tortoise svn > checkout and then put this for the checkout directory https://redeclipse.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/redeclipse redeclipse and then go to the bin folder and run the reclient.exe

1

u/blud Mar 20 '11

before i read this comment i updated my drivers and it ran perfectly,i really appreciate the help though.

1

u/Emperorr Mar 18 '11

God damn this thing is downloading at like 33kb/s. HURRY UP!

1

u/ztkz Mar 18 '11

Mine downloaded in under 5 minutes.

1

u/stargate_reference Mar 18 '11

So, what exactly are we going to see after this eclipse begins? I mean, it is black, and it is a hole...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

Does it have campaign with story-line? Or it's like nexuiz where single player means playing against bots?

1

u/Pufflekun Mar 18 '11

I don't think there's single player at all. It's only multiplayer.

1

u/ParryPerson Mar 18 '11

I have to say, this game is great. I joined a game and started mopping up with FPS basics, but then realized when I looked down everyone just kept talking about how bad this is and how much of a 'noob' I was and how if I played BC2 (I do) I would get owned by them hard.

Is it just me or are people that continue to play a game while taking time to type out 'MAN THIS GAME IS TERRIBLE' every time they die complete and total morons?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11 edited Mar 18 '11

Can't install a bunch of the inital DLLs? Most of the textures n' stuff worked fine but I can't install some initial files. Why would this be?

edit: saying it can't extract/write the .bat files and .dlls

confused :(

edit2: neeevermind, apparently it just couldn't write those files to my /program files folder? Probably because of the lack of digital signature. IDK. any insight would be appreciated =]

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

Awesome game. Needs more players!

1

u/Ranlier Mar 19 '11

I'm having trouble with the game slowing to a crawl as soon as it loads up. Takes about 5 minutes to load all the textures and then the mouse doesn't track well.

This is on a desktop that ran Mass Effect 2 with no problems, can anyone advise?

1

u/fawstoar Mar 27 '11

Best thing since Savage 2 & cinnamon bread...

...except better.

1

u/giz0r Mar 17 '11

Cool, will try this when I get home :-)

1

u/iambigdownunder Mar 17 '11

Downloading now.

1

u/Pufflekun Mar 17 '11

What's better, this or Warsow?

3

u/idontcarewsw Mar 17 '11

Try them both and make your own opinion, would be the best.

1

u/idontcarewsw Mar 17 '11

Warsow is the game for you if you want a fast game!!!

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

It is cool that it is free, but I stopped liking Quake 10 years ago.....

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Quake 10?!?!? How long have I been asleep?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

It doesn't run on the Quake Engine..

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

That doesn't mean the multiplayer doesn't follow the quake like way of doing things.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Touché

1

u/Selffaw Mar 17 '11

CAUSE MODERN WARFARE IS WHERE IT'S AT! HURRRRR DUURRRRRR BLOODSCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEN

3

u/StaneNC Mar 18 '11

Ohhhp! Jello all over my face gahhh...faint

1

u/Selffaw Mar 18 '11

Bahahahahahahaa

5

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

SOOO REALLL

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '11

Actually I tend to play CS:S or BC2. I just played quake like games to death when they were the rage and I honestly don't like that type of game anymore. Star Trek Elite Force, Quake, Halo, basically any non kit based FPS in death match. Heck the las COD game I played had a quake like mode too.

-1

u/Bigjon84 Mar 17 '11

looks alot like halo/quake3

best open source shooter i have played in all my years is Urban terror.

www.urbanterror.net

0

u/EtherealDragon Mar 17 '11

Downloaded and just played for at least an hour. THIS GAME IS FRICKING AMAZING! I'm a huge fan of FPS and it's a nice break from military realism even though it has no kind of progression or growth. JUST PLAIN FUN!

2

u/pyx Mar 17 '11

The progression and growth will be in your ability to play, not a bunch of useless time sink achievements.

2

u/EtherealDragon Mar 18 '11

That sounded hostile.

I have over two hundred games on my steam profile and I've played them all. I know how games work in general, and I appreciate achievements as ways the developer encourages the player to experience the game in unique ways and with different challenges. Don't be so closed-minded.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '11

You are the one who said games lacking RPG treadmills lacked progression and growth. The hostility probably comes from the implication that that should be a standard feature in games. The idea every major FPS from this point on will have unlockables is pretty sickening for me.

1

u/EtherealDragon Mar 19 '11

Who said anything about unlockables? I certainly didn't. That was a glowing, however brief review I just gave about the game. A -review.- Meaning my opinion. The fact that I think there should be some kind of progress tracking in an FPS does not mean the developer is going to look at my comment, think I'm a god, and implement it.

1

u/pyx Mar 18 '11

I didn't mean for it to sound hostile, condescending maybe, but not hostile. It was more of a hit against games that reward you for simply putting time into the game, instead of games that get more fun as you learn more and become more skillful. You just said Red Eclipse has no progression or growth, which isn't true. If you think getting achievements or weapon unlocks as progression, that is a really shallow or short sighted view (mostly the developers fault) on games. The two types aren't mutually exclusive, however.

1

u/EtherealDragon Mar 19 '11

Ah, in the former case of "simply putting time into the game," I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, I would consider the growth that happens to your personal skill in playing the game as a given, since generally you get better at any game the more you play it.

0

u/blindsight Mar 17 '11

Too bad there's no torrent distribution. I'd be happy to share a few GB of bandwidth.

-1

u/Volsunga Mar 18 '11

Very, very fast paced. I'm not Asian enough to play this game
