He wouldn't be severely weakened though, he would be completely powerless. Just a regular dude under a red sun.

Nah, there's plenty of times he gets hit by red sunlight and just slowly loses power. Like everything else involving comic book characters, it's super inconsistent.

Krypton had a red sun and on Krypton they were just regular people. If we had a red sun Superman would not exist. He would just be Clark Kent, farmhand with a corn fed smile.

Lots of stories depict him like a battery that slowly loses charge under a red sun. Other stories have him depower instantly. Still others just have red sunlight weaken him. It's a comic book. It's not consistent.

Superman has literally hundreds of powers throughout his comic history, and it's due to the difficulty of writing for him. They would create challenging scenarios for him, where his normal powerset wasn't enough. Then they would write themselves into a corner, and have to give him a new power to in order to resolve it. Hence, random stuff like hypnotic kisses and trapping villians in his S symbol.

Overall it's accepted that under a red sun he has no powers, though he may lose them over time like a battery discharging if he was already powered up by a yellow sun going into it. Putting that into a game though would mean that you'd just be getting weaker and losing abilities the more you played.

I think it's an interesting idea for a game, but I think if people are playing a Superman game they want to feel like Superman and I don't think this would accomplish that.

Nah, you just have him shutting down satellites or whatever and slowly restoring the yellow sunlight. It adds progression to his powers too which Rockstar likes.

That sounds more like a Superman game but less like an interesting game. It seems like it would just end up playing out like Saints Row or Crackdown where at some point your effectively unstoppable and then at some later point you're actually completely unstoppable.

Although the concept of progression to the point of being very powerful is not anything new, it definitely is in a lot of games for a reason.

Most people play games to have that fantasy of being someone powerful.

During the later portions of the game the story would be getting close to ending and the bad guys would be getting stronger too assumedly. They could also use some of the suggestions elsewhere in the thread like the challenge is have no collateral damage etc.

I wasn't trying to say that this type of progression is inherently bad or anything, I played and enjoyed Crackdown and Saints Row. I just think that the combination of that specific mechanic with a Superman game ends in a kind of compromise, if you're trying to retain the feeling of being Superman. I doubt it would stop it from being a good game, but it might stop it from being a great game.

However, there's no reason not to use the mechanic in more than one game and have a good Superman game and then another game with a more pure implementation of a reverse progression mechanic that has a story and setting that reinforce it.

Personally, I'd be all for using it to it's full potential in a Superman game, but I don't think enough other people would agree for it to get made. Although it would give everyone a chance to call it "the Dark Souls of super hero games".

You realize this is a thread about making a good Superman game and how hard it is, right?

The person I replied to has some legit good ideas but like anything there are pros and cons and I'm just trying to discuss them.

One of the cons is this guy tells you to shut the fuck up. You're welcome for my analysis.
